May have missed this if someone has commented then I apologise. What do others think of the Facebook/Twitter 'no make up selfie' thing that has gone viral.

Ana Wed 19-Mar-14 22:46:07

I have no idea. What is it?

maxdrans Wed 19-Mar-14 23:12:16

It's all over Facebook I assume you donate and then add photo my Ipad has no flash so cannot contribute.tonight

Flowerofthewest Wed 19-Mar-14 23:12:31

Apparently a picture of yourself without make up is to be posted to raise money and awareness of cancer. I think you are expected to nominate others to do the same and these are to donate monies to the cause. I have decided to post infograms for kidney cancer and prostate cancer instead. My visage would scare anyone.

penguinpaperback Wed 19-Mar-14 23:23:00

Apparently lots of people are posting their pictures but not donating any money. But I suppose it's raising awareness still. I have never taken a 'selfie.'

'Famous' people, like Windy in Auchterarder, are putting make-up on before taking their selfies.

I don't really get the no make-up thing. How does not wearing make-up (or wearing it) raise consciousness about cancer? I suppose it's just an attention-seeking gimmick and if it raises funds for cancer charities....

So now, when you see a woman without make-up or a man with, you think "cancer" and "give money."

Charity fund-raising gets weirder and weirder.

My steam driven ipad doesn't have a. Camera - don't think I will upgrade yet awhile grin

grannyisland Thu 20-Mar-14 09:49:11

The ones I've seen have been girls in their twenties and thirties. I wondered if it was a sort of dare for those who wouldn't think of being seen in public without makeup (unlike me who rarely bothers!)

grannyisland Thu 20-Mar-14 09:50:31

More than £15,000 donated so far so can't be bad. smile

Aka Thu 20-Mar-14 10:36:18

It's to highlight the plight of cancer patients, many of whom have lost their hair, are blown up on steroids, and not looking their best, I'm told. It's doing the rounds of my DD's friends (in their 40s) and has raised quite a bit of cash as * grannyisland* says.

rosesarered Thu 20-Mar-14 10:44:21

I would rather just send them a cheque [and do.]

Aka Thu 20-Mar-14 10:44:51

Me too!

thatbags Thu 20-Mar-14 22:08:42

This person has put it well. It is shocking that it is thought brave to take a selfie without make-up.

Another charity stunt to add to my list of what puts me off charities.

This morning I thought it was just me feeling uncomfortable with the gimmick. It is some comfort to know that there are others out there equally appalled.

Galen Thu 20-Mar-14 22:15:38

My dd has done it and donated.
I would if I could work out how to!
I'd nominate Jingle and Cari

merlotgran Thu 20-Mar-14 22:19:02

I was nominated by someone on facebook but ignored it. I don't like being put on the spot.

Ana Thu 20-Mar-14 22:21:22

I don't really understand it - yes, cancer patients can look awful during treatment and without hair etc., but they don't usually go out and about without makeup, or wigless!

Anyone who has a serious illness doesn't always look their best, but highlighting in this way seems insensitive to me!

Ana Thu 20-Mar-14 22:22:33

(really must try to curb my exclamation mark addiction...hmm)

thatbags Thu 20-Mar-14 22:30:53

Yes, it is insensitive to suggest, as the gimmick does, intentionally or not, that a person (especially a woman goes without saying) cannot look their best without make-up so showing your face without make-up is "brave". The idea is gross, just gross.

Donate by all means.

Galen Thu 20-Mar-14 22:44:20

Mo Mowlan!
If it raises Ca awareness on any form, I'm for it!
I'd even go topless! (Now that's a horrifying threat if there ever was one!)

Galen Thu 20-Mar-14 22:50:19

For heavens sake.
It's is a gimmick!
But it's making more people aware of Ca.
It's also raising money for a GOOD CAUSE!
If people would donate money for me to pose naked !
I'd do it!
Bug I think, they'd be much better to donate money to persuade me not to!

penguinpaperback Thu 20-Mar-14 22:54:03

I wore scarves rather than wigs, they felt more comfortable but was bare at home. Looking at baby pictures I had a very funny shaped head but now it's a round little malteaser. The GC were great and know I will lose my hair again. The worst thing, don't know if others felt the same was losing my eyebrows and eyelashes. Hard to draw eyebrows on with no guide line as it were.

penguinpaperback Thu 20-Mar-14 22:57:23

Aren't we all aware of cancer by now Galen?
And too late you have offered now. smile

Aka Thu 20-Mar-14 22:58:21

Well said .Galen
Nobody's forcing anyone to do it, it's entirely up to the individual to post, donate, etc. It's not up to others to criticise how other people choose to raise money. If you don't like it then tough.

Galen Thu 20-Mar-14 23:05:55

NO!
It is now on the news that breast Ca is very prevalent in the over 70's
penguin
Ok!
I'll take on the challenge if I get enough sponsorship from GN members!
I will pose naked, apart, of course, from my pearls!

GNHQ .

I need your help!

Lona Thu 20-Mar-14 23:10:00

I agree Galen and Aka. I've done it and donated, which I, and probably lots of others, wouldn't have done.
No one has to join in if they don't want to.
It's a 'gimmick' which has raised a lot of money over the last couple of days.
