Well you are all being very restrained - I have searched for a thread on this topic and can't seem to find one! So slimeball Clifford is getting his comeuppance at last. What a totally unpleasant, arrogant and nauseating character he always has been is. And how wonderfully ironic to be savaged by the gutter press red tops which in the past have promulgated his lies and distortions with such dedication. So they believed he was telling the truth then did they? Leopards and spots spring to mind.

Exactly Iam64 - many people are easily drawn in by so-called 'charm' or the promises of 'stardom' even parents who should know better.

Always been predatory sex offenders as well. Often, they are very skilled at convincing everyone around them that they are likeable, reliable people - just like Max Clifford, and even JS

There was a fourteen year old girl abused on three separate occasions, in his car. Wonder why, after the first time, she got back in.

I'm not excusing him. I think he is a sleazeball he and deserves what's no doubt coming to him.

But I do wonder where the parents of the young girls were at the time.

David Mellor can hardly blame Max Clifford for what he ( Mellor) did, all Max Clifford did was expose his for the slime ball he is. Not a fan of Clifford, and dont read the red tops, but presumably editors choose stories ( and pay for them) only if they think it will increase their readership? The really bad news about this is that it has meant Mellor being back on air with his sneering look, he makes my flesh crawl, and however much that girl got for selling her story to the tabloids vis Clifford, it wasn't enough.

Looks like he expected to be convicted, given his asset-shifting activities before the trial.

The work that is being done is gradually exposing these people, as whenim says, so it is obviously thorough and wide ranging. I noticed Cyril Smith is implicated, or was he already?

(Useless information: a "petard" was an early underground explosive, and had to be placed in a tunnel, say, under the ramparts of a city. They were extremely unreliable and tended to go off and take anyone still underground with them, hence the saying. And hence the "petit(e)? petard" in French for a fart.)

At least Mellor's cavorting was with a grown woman and consensual.

Anniebach Wed 30-Apr-14 09:19:27

I am rather amused that Mellor lays the blame for his fall from grace on Clifford.

I felt only relief that the steady work of the police and CPS has brought this trial to justifiable convictions, after the awful accusations of a witch hunt on celebs kept being dragged out.

I question the wisdom of giving Max Cliffird bail, because I wonder if he is now a suicide risk. He's lost nearly everything and it seems some of his family are not going to stand by him.

Like Iam64 I follow Fernbridge, Yew Tree and otter investigations with interest. Lots of famous, powerful people's names are mentioned on the internet as being implicated in these paedophile rings. Some were young enough to be drawn in as victims of sexual abuse before their corruption and movement into abusing children themselves.

As long as things keep moving forward I am satisfied to wait and see these cases come to trial. I am concerned that some may not, as the powerful have the means to put obstacles in the way of justice, and some may disappear or take their own lives before it comes to the crunch.

'Hoist by his own petard'....those who live by the sword, die by the sword.....etc etc. Nothing new is there?

Aka Wed 30-Apr-14 08:57:08

Didn't mean that to sound aggresive Petallus hope it didn't???

Soutra Wed 30-Apr-14 08:51:07

While it is chilling to fully comprehend the depths to which some people sank regarding sexual or physical abuse of women and children, what must be becoming clear is that NOBODY can be assumed to be above suspicion just because of their status. Too many blind eyes have been turned and too many accusations "pooh-poohed".

Iam64 Wed 30-Apr-14 08:42:00

Aka makes a good point about the elevation of a number of individuals later proved to be 'molesters'.

I'm relieved that the jury were able to convict Max Clifford, despite the time that elapsed since some of the offences took place. He, like Jimmy Saville and Cyril Smith has presented himself as a larger than life type of personality. It is worrying that all 3 of these disgusting men have put themselves in the centre of charity fund raisers, particularly those connected to children.

David Mellor said in a radio interview yesterday that 'rumours' about Max Clifford and sexual abuse were swirling around for years. Interesting that, the same with Jimmy Saville and Cyril Smith. All 3 of these men were bullies, happy to threaten anyone who spoke the truth about them.

I am not gloating Petallus, when I say that I'm relieved and pleased that Op Fernbridge's investigation into Max Clifford had resulted in a conviction. I live in hope that the broader investigation its undertaking will finally lead to public exposure, and better still, successful prosecution of a number of well known public figures currently the focus of Operation Fernbridge.

Soutra Wed 30-Apr-14 08:34:49

Is anybody viciously gloating?? I find it hard to understand how anybody could "like"" (even "quite") someone whose raison d'etre seemed to be to extract massive amounts of money from the tabloids usually after some personal trauma or "train crash" in a private life.

Aka Wed 30-Apr-14 08:12:04

I don't understand your final sentence Petallus

petallus Wed 30-Apr-14 08:00:10

I used to quite like Max Clifford.

I was hoping we would not have a thread on the topic that was too viciously gloating!

sherish Wed 30-Apr-14 07:34:11

It said in the papers on Sunday that his wife (of not very long) was waiting for the trial to end then she would be filing for divorce.

kittylester Wed 30-Apr-14 07:31:46

I think it was his daughter standing to his right. She has a form of arthritis but I believe she works for him.

Do I remember he got married again a few years ago? One of the weirdest things to come out of the trial was, to me, that he kept a letter from a victim in his bedside draw.

I listened to David Mellor on the radio (on Jeremy Vine, I think) saying Clifford always mixed lies with the truth to get more money for stories but enough to stop the victim of the story suing!

Aka Wed 30-Apr-14 07:08:01

Amazing how many of these molesters were elevated to the peerage isn't it?

shysal Wed 30-Apr-14 06:58:33

Well said Soutra, you have hit the nail on the head (another saying)!

Aka Wed 30-Apr-14 06:55:00

Or even 'introduced' ..

Aka Wed 30-Apr-14 06:54:36

It's estimated that Shakespeare intriduced hundreds of new words (eg dwindle) and phrases ('it's Greek to me) into the English language.

janeainsworth Wed 30-Apr-14 05:57:18

I have to confess I didn't realise it was from Hamlet either blush
But it was one of my father's favourite sayings!

Grannyknot Tue 29-Apr-14 22:30:08

I didn't recognise it as Hamlet, Anno smile. Apologies for my ignorance.

annodomini Tue 29-Apr-14 22:25:05

How can a quotation from Hamlet be simply an 'old-fashioned saying'? It fits the bill in this context perfectly.
