Surely the most effective thing would be for the foreign office to pass on the message that aid will have to be re-considered if this barbarity is allowed to happen? One hopes that this is going on behind the scenes. I for one, do not want any of my money going to a country that permits this behaviour. And the same applies to Nigeria and their ineffective and pathetic government.

I heard that she was to have 100 lashes as well after the baby was born. How horrific is that. Sadists!

The one main hope is that Sharia isn't the law of the land even in Sudan so a higher court may over-rule this judgement. They won't even let her husband take charge of the little boy who is in prison with her, because he is Christian and they have claimed the child for Islam. It's a sick society.

Ana I have only found a quote saying over a year but you may well be right. The fact it was allowed at all is what worries me.

Jings and Janeainsworth.

Thank you for 'blueing' the story, I don't know how to do that.

I saw the report on Aljazeera and found it astonishing. I did not know about the petition. Obviously I will sign.

Ana Fri 16-May-14 22:41:39

Agus, I think it's been far longer than a year. It's indefensible!

annodomini Fri 16-May-14 22:38:37

Amnesty has a text system going and I have responded to that so hava also signed this one. Is the world becoming more barbaric?

janeainsworth Fri 16-May-14 22:22:25

Someone else who needs rescuing and refuge in our country where Sharia law should not be allowed to operate. We cannot have a dual system.

I pray that she is reprieved.

Agus Fri 16-May-14 19:12:47

Deplorable and inhumane.

My understanding is that sharia law has been operating in some areas of England for over a year and I fail to understand why Westminster even entertained allowing this into English courts. I sincerely hope this does not spread to other parts of Britain when the above is an example of what they accept as justice.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 16-May-14 19:05:10

It's hard to comment on this. It's just too awful. And makes you feel so helpless. And angry.

Surely they will never let sharia law be practised in this country? (Please God)

bbc news article about the case

Barbaric - sick - primitive - truly shocking. I am not denigrating the 'Bring back our girls' in the slightest-- but I would like to hear e.g. Michelle Obama's comments on this apalling situation

I have caught up with this story a little late bit I am disgusted. It is wicked, cruel and goes against every rule of humanity I can think of.

27 year old Mariam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag is to be hanged and given 100 lashes.

Her crimes were Apostasy and adultery.

She has a 20month old son, Martin and is 8 months pregnant. Her son is in prison with her and her sentence will be carried out 'after' the birth of her child. The father is allowed no contact with his wife and child and will not even see his new born. Her sentence of death will be possibly not occur if she renounces her christian faith.

Why?

Because of Sharia Law.

She was born to Muslim father but after he abandoned them her mother brought her up as a christian. In Sharia Law it is forbidden for women to marry outside of the Muslim religion, surprise, surprise 'not for men'. Some reports say she converted to marry but I believe the first reason to be true.

I fully appreciate that this case is extreme in our eyes and it is a first even for Sudan. However there are extreme case of the implementation of Sharia Law taking place world wide, as we speak I am sure.

Can somebody please make a case for why Sharia Law is be permitted in the UK. I fear the more it is allowed to flourish the more it will become difficult to control in years to come.

I thought Sarah Vine made a perfectly reasonable comment in the Daily Mail. She said " A group of terrified schoolgirls somewhere in Nigeria cower beneath a sea of grey while a maniac with a Kalashnikov claims them as 'his property'. Meanwhile women in Iran risk their lives by throwing off their veils on Facebook. Is there any greater symbol of female oppression than the hijab, niqab or burka"
