Many thanks for the answers Ana and POGS - it certainly will make interesting viewing.

Not recently, Jess. Juncker seems to be pretty much a certainty.

JessM Sun 01-Jun-14 22:04:15

Apparently there are a number of women being mentioned for the role, including Christine Lagard

rosesarered Sun 01-Jun-14 21:01:18

It would seem that up to now, none of them do bugger all for us.

feetlebaum Sun 01-Jun-14 19:32:50

They take theior seats, and claim their money, and do bugger all on our behalf. Which is why I call therm traitors...

durhamjen Sun 01-Jun-14 19:27:03

Will the newly elected MEPs take their seats? If so, to do what? Try and close the parliament down?

Penstemmon Sun 01-Jun-14 19:22:41

Presumably if Ukraine unempolyed youth are helped into work inn the Ukraine they will not be seeking to emigrate elsewhere! wink

POGS Sun 01-Jun-14 18:38:46

Jean Claude Junker has been likened to Jaques Delors. Out and Out for more moves towards a Federal State of Europe.

He will probably be against practically everything that shouts of reform hence the UK, Sweden, Hungary are amongst those who wanted a more reforming EU Commission and Parliament but it won't happen under Junkers if he get's elected.

The EU Parliament is quite possibly looking toward quite a bit of turmoil when the newly elected MEP'S take their seats, more so if Junker is elected.

Interesting viewing.

I don't know about Merkel, she did appear to change her mind after criticism of her less-than-enthusiastic response to Juncker's nomination, but it seems Cameron is aware that Juncker would be pretty intractable if the UK tries to renegotiate terms with the EU.

HollyDaze Sun 01-Jun-14 11:37:12

Do you know what he has against Juncker Ana? The news team did say that Merkel was also unhappy but was told that as she had supported him earlier, she had to support him again now. I'm just wondering what it is they have against him.

Ana Sun 01-Jun-14 11:12:59

Cameron has apparently said he couldn't guarantee the UK's continuing membership if Juncker is elected, meaning he'd have to let us have the oft-promised referendum, the outcome of which is anyone's guess!

HollyDaze Sun 01-Jun-14 10:50:15

According to BBC news this morning, it is being reported that some areas of the EU are telling the UK to 'either shut up and stop trying to blackmail us or leave'. It has also been stated that Cameron has refused to stay as part of the EU if the Juncker is elected - that has been denied as no-one at the meeting has spoken yet about any details of what was said.

POGS, I agree that Cameron has made the most noise about resisting more demands from the EU, but to date I haven't heard the government's official response to this latest imperative.

POGS Sat 31-May-14 20:47:49

At least Cameron tries to stick up for Britain, Clegg and Miliband would have said 'have more, why not'. confused

POGS Sat 31-May-14 20:44:41

As per my post on the EU VOTE thread. 30th May 20.49

"So the European Commission met this week after getting the results and knowing the far left and far right parties had done very well"

"You would have thought somewhere along the lines a little intelligence would tell them to watch what they were doing and take onboard the people's of Europe distrust and dislike for them".

"Oh no' Van Rompuy goes and asks for 'another' £3.8 Billion increase in it's budget. As the UK 'cough's up' approximately 8% of the budget to this 'bloated' organisation, that has never balanced it's books but nobody gives a damn about that fact, that means about another £500 Million will be 'chucked down the drain hole' through the European Commisson 'blowing smoke up it's own ass".

In 2002 Britain paid in £2.9 Billion. 2012 Britain paid in £9.5 Billion.

So I hope David Cameron does say sod off, find it by saving money. Perhaps the gravy train to Strassburg could be top of the list. Ridiculous waste of money that is. MEP's have voted for it to be stopped but the Commission just ignore them, as they are obviously doing to the electorate. No wonder the far right and left are gaining seats.

"EU leaders signed chapters of the agreement with Ukraine dealing with political cooperation in March 2014, lending support to Ukraine soon after Crimea was occupied by Russian forces.

They delayed signing the more substantial parts concerning free trade until Ukraine had elected a new president, although they did grant temporary trade benefits." according to Reuters.

Of course Russia isn't happy about it!

HollyDaze Sat 31-May-14 17:43:27

From what I've read, it stated that Russia wouldn't be happy about Ukraine joining the EU as it wouldn't want the EU on its doorstep!

Ana Sat 31-May-14 12:44:08

Sorry, that should have been Ukraine.

Ana Sat 31-May-14 12:25:22

Hmm - so Cameron hasn't actually said 'no', the Treasury is just saying the EU shouldn't be asking for more money...

The Ukraine is partly in the EU, they haven't completed all the stages yet.

HollyDaze Sat 31-May-14 12:15:16

The EU insisted Friday that member states must find more than two billion euros this year to cover spending on Ukraine and youth unemployment projects after Britain baulked at the demand.

The commission has published proposals to increase the 2014 contributions from members by 2.16 billion euros (£1.76bn) to cover increased costs for growth and jobs schemes, and help for Ukraine.

It wants 4.73 billion euros (£3.85bn) in total but some will come from other sources including competition fines.

The commission said the money was for schemes agreed by member states.

But the UK Treasury said "existing funds" should be used to cover costs.

It said the real cost to member states would be the higher figure of 4.73 billion euros - of which the UK share would be about £500m.

The extra money being raised from sources such as competition fines should be used to fund rebates to member states or cut future payments, it added.

The UK Treasury said: "At a time when countries across Europe continue to take difficult decisions to deal with deficits, the European Commission should not be asking Europe's taxpayers for yet more money.

"The UK firmly believes the EU should manage any additional spending pressures through the reallocation of existing funds within the agreed budget.

"We will work with other governments to achieve a budget for this year which ensures budget discipline and reflects the economic reality in Europe, as well as the tough but fair deal done by the prime minister last year."

Would this refusal have occurred without the rise of UKIP?

Why are the EU wanting to help fund the Ukraine when it isn't part of the EU?
