Cliff Richard - shock!

I heard on the 1 o'clock news that police are searching the Berkshire home of Cliff Richard regarding an alleged sex offence with a boy, aged under 16, dating back to the 1980's.

DD3 aged 27 is in shock and was heard to say 'What is the world coming to, it will be Terry Wogan and Bruce Forsyth next!'

It will be interesting to see whether the fact that it has been reported on television brings any more victims to the fore.

susie - I've always liked Cliff. I wouldn't say I was a die hard fan but I've been to a few of his concerts in the past and have some of his LPs/CDs. He puts on a great show. The venues have been packed with fans of all ages, with everyone up dancing the night away.

Dare I admit that I've been a Cliff fan since I was about 12. I've been to a few concerts and they were always packed out with fans of all ages so where are all these fans? I'd have thought on a site as big as this there must be some who like him and/or his music!! Or is it a case of no-one will admit it?
I just hope the allegations are not true!

Cagsy Fri 15-Aug-14 12:21:43

I was wondering that Nonnie. I have no idea what he has or hasn't been up to and if he is gay or not, and over the latter I care not a jot but surely people can remain single, it's not an offence, though some of his music is!
You do wonder where it will all end and how sure we can be about events that happened 30 years or so ago, wonder how many celebs are having sleepless nights?

Anniebach Fri 15-Aug-14 11:45:48

Staged for the cameras I expect Nonnie, two officers walking up the drive wouldn't have the same effect

Nonnie Fri 15-Aug-14 10:48:47

I wonder why it took quite so many police to search on apartment? I thought they were claiming to be understaffed. Seems a lot of them came down from Yorkshire too. He used to have a big house in Weighbridge, if he still does why haven't they searched that. Not sure they would find much after so long anyway but perhaps they were looking for something more recent?

When did Jimmy Saville's crimes become 'actual' instead of 'alleged'? Not defending him, just saying that there has been no trial. Every time I was in Stoke Mandeville around 40 years ago they sang his praises.

Anniebach Fri 15-Aug-14 09:26:13

The police have always tipped off the media . Nothing is gained by doing do, unless destroying a persons reputation on an allegation can count as in the public interest which says much of what the public are interested in . No matter the outcome of this we are witnessing a career ending , smoke without fire etc. Innocent untill proven guilty doesn't apply in this country.

Pity alleged corrupt police officers are not named , give them a dose of their own medicine

I am no Richards fan, find him irritating and rather pompous but I feel so sorry for him, 2014 and we still have 'nudge, wink,he is gay'

suebailey1 Fri 15-Aug-14 09:06:44

There have always been rumours about 'Stiff'. No smoke without fire! Strange bloke- bloody awful music.

feetlebaum Fri 15-Aug-14 08:41:12

It used to be the accepted procedure for Police to inform the media before raiding someone - and although it is less common nowadays it still happens quite legitimately. It's certainly not evidence of corruption.

whatsgoingon Fri 15-Aug-14 08:19:38

Mishap the police could have I would assume, some of them are as corrupt as the suspects they are investigating.
Most of us are law abiding citizens but sadly there are some evil twisted people out there and the police have an almost impossible job to do because not everyone is what they seem to be.

Mishap Fri 15-Aug-14 07:54:53

Yes - I thought that it was most odd that all the cameras were there to film the police going in - it really does not seem right. Who tipped them the wink?

Nonu Thu 14-Aug-14 22:45:23

Not usually smoke without fire1

Treebee Thu 14-Aug-14 22:13:55

I don't believe this allegation is true. I want to know why journalists were there to film the police entering and leaving Cliff's English home. Feels like a set up to me.

glassortwo Thu 14-Aug-14 21:57:37

I dont think this is the end of it jingle not by a long chalk. sad

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 21:48:45

There is stuff on those MN threads I wish I hadn't read.

I hope it is n't true about CR.

glassortwo Thu 14-Aug-14 21:48:34

And another.

whitewave Thu 14-Aug-14 21:23:58

People claimed that there was a witch hunt against Saville.

cikada Thu 14-Aug-14 21:21:51

This is fast becoming a witch hunt, is nobody safe anymore from that kind of accusation? Yes, Jimmy Saville was guilty and there are certainly a number of other celebrities who took advantage of their appeal to young vulnerable persons and perhaps Cliff Richards is as well but we are now very publically accusing any- and everybody. And what is worse they are guilty unless proven innocent and not the other way round.

Thanks, glass

Perhaps explains why the BBC refused to play his tracks for a long time.

Here are two of the threads.

rosequartz Thu 14-Aug-14 21:12:10

Oh, it's there, it wasn't before, I thought it might have been deleted.
Just a bit slow today. (Me and the computer)

rosequartz Thu 14-Aug-14 21:10:08

I can't find it on mn, what's it called? Don't have to join, do I (scary thought)

Deedaa Thu 14-Aug-14 21:02:36

Roses When the police turned up on the doorstep early one morning to examine DH's computers I asked what would have happened if I hadn't opened the door. They assured me they would just have broken the door down and carried on. This was about 10 years ago so the power has always been there.

I've always thought Cliff was more asexual than gay, but I've never heard anything to suggest that he liked young boys. In a career stretching over 60 years you'd have thought stories would have surfaced before now.

whitewave Thu 14-Aug-14 20:44:08

According to MN CR has known for about 5 years that the police were closing in so it would not have come as any surprise. He was apparently known as "Kitty" in certain circles!?

rosesarered Thu 14-Aug-14 20:41:32

What does surprise me is that you can have your property searched by a whole team of police, when you are out of the country [Cliff says he was not told, until after and all the newspapers were informed it was happening by the police.]This is not a murder inquiry, after all, but an alleged incident in the 1980's.I never realised that the police had those sort of powers, is this recent [anti-terrorist laws?]
