Probably not hmm

HollyDaze Wed 24-Sept-14 17:31:45

Very interesting that there is no comment about the Labour leader's screw up.

I'm also surprised there is no thread on Milliband's omissions - the excuses reasons he gave on the news this morning will a little less than convincing.

Nonnie Wed 24-Sept-14 17:25:00

Annie I didn't say it was right! All I said was that he slipped up.

I don't understand why people pick on the slightest thing in any political threads, first Ana now me! sad

Nonnie, no matter a politician or not, no matter how serious or trivial a repeated conversation , there was betrayal of trust , if one agrees not to repeat any conversation or confidence surely to break the agreement is wrong

goldengirl Wed 24-Sept-14 15:40:03

The fact that he betrays - yes I know it's a strong word, but he's in a very responsible position - even a teeny bit of what is supposedly a private conversation between Monarch and PM and used words which were not respectful, suggests that he is perhaps not to be trusted with more serious issues. It's a side of him I never thought I'd see - quite the show off. I admit to being disappointed in him

penguinpaperback Wed 24-Sept-14 14:50:21

How very true Nonnie. Forgetful politicians. smile

HollyDaze Wed 24-Sept-14 14:29:34

And to cap it all, I think it is extremely patronising for a man to refer to any woman 'purring' about anything whatsoever. So all in all, I think he has made a right prat of himself and shown his attitudes to women - perhaps older women in particular - to be extremely questionable.

Precisely - I hope she does seriously reprimand him for portraying her in that light.

nightowl Wed 24-Sept-14 14:22:07

I think it was rude and disrespectful of him to divulge the content of a phone conversation with the Queen on any subject, let alone one as sensitive as the outcome of the Scottish referendum.

I also think it shows a lack of political judgement to think it was appropriate to make any allusion whatsoever to the Queen's response, knowing that she has to appear impartial and is unable to give any response to his remarks.

It did make me cringe when I heard it - somehow, I just don't see the Queen as the purring type.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 24-Sept-14 13:42:32

What an idiot! grin Will these politicians never learn.

(Wonder if it was "tear up", or "cheer up")

Nonnie Wed 24-Sept-14 13:27:22

I think he slipped up and perhaps wished he hadn't said it but I really don't think it is a big deal. In fact I think it is rather nice if occasionally we find out that politicians are human too.

At least he didn't forget half his speech but then that's another thread surely?

Iam64 Wed 24-Sept-14 13:17:25

That wouldn't be surprise would it, anniebach, that the Queen hoped not the be the monarch who presided over the break up of the union

Anniebach Wed 24-Sept-14 10:26:00

For me a telephone conversation between two people is a private conversation unless one party gives permission for the conversation to be repeated , it may not reflect badly on the queen yet almost half who voted now yes know for sure she was rooting for the other side .

POGS Wed 24-Sept-14 09:28:20

I would think the Queen will have looked at the available footage 'in it's entirety', not just the one sentence spoken of and in her vast experience of how the media works will be understanding.

The footage in my opinion shows how relieved and genuinely pleased both Cameron and the Queen are very happy Scotland is to remain in the UK and that point trumps the other.

The Queen is not a bitter, twisted person and whilst it may not be protocol this was not a private conversation that will or does reflect badly on her, quite the opposition in fact as it cements the view she loves Scotland and was very happy with the call from Cameron.

Happy days for the media I guess.

rosequartz Wed 24-Sept-14 09:26:43

I think I missed the point of the OP, thinking he would be pleased to see her after the no vote!

I am sure he will be very aware if she is displeased even if she keeps her claws sheathed.

Did anyone watch An Audience with The Queen with Helen Mirren as her may? I saw it at our local cinema, as a live broadcast from the National Theatre and loved it. I'm with Granny2, in believing it isn't a fuss about nothing, though I'm sure buck house will make no further comment. I imagine the boy wonder will be somewhat subdued when he next visits. grin

GrannyTwice Tue 23-Sept-14 22:40:14

I expect you'll be waiting as long for my apology as I will for your discussion as to why the Telegraph's comments were are a fuss about nothing. And anno - of course HM welcomed the result but that wasn't my point, was it, it was about the behaviour of DC

annodomini Tue 23-Sept-14 22:30:13

I'm sure HM heaved a sigh of relief and topped up the G&T.

Ana Tue 23-Sept-14 22:21:01

And I'm still waiting for an apology for the content of your deleted post, but I doubt that'll be forthcoming.

Get off my case.

GrannyTwice Tue 23-Sept-14 22:19:14

Ana - still waiting for your answer as to why its a fuss about nothing and how that relates to the convention of conversations with HM? What's superior and sarcastic about that?

Ana Tue 23-Sept-14 22:16:16

OFGS G2, give it a rest with the superior-toned sarcasm. You're just showing yourself up.

merlotgran Tue 23-Sept-14 22:14:31

Or maybe she should have been shouting, NOOOOOOOOO grin

merlotgran Tue 23-Sept-14 22:13:43

The Queen probably punched the air and ran around the room shouting YESSSSSSS!!!

She doesn't appear to be a cat lover and as far as I know, corgis don't purr so maybe Philip was snoring?

GrannyTwice Tue 23-Sept-14 22:08:30

Dear Ana - so lovely to have the opportunity to engage yet again with you in such reasoned , intelligent and well informer debate about the conventions of the British constitution. Perhaps you could enlighten us all with all the examples you are doubtless so well aware of of British PMs telling Americans of telephone calls they have had with HM and her reactions to a very important constitutional issue.

Atqui Tue 23-Sept-14 21:59:40

Sorry... It's late for me!
