Anyone live in his constituency?
This woman, an NHS nurse, is standing against him at the election next year.

OMG that's appalling. What was the man thinking?

susieb755 Sun 23-Nov-14 19:36:44

And in this of all weeks ! Its International End Violence against women week

durhamjen Sun 23-Nov-14 19:37:12

He knew what he was thinking, vampire, assuming he was thinking at all.
He refused to be sidelined in the last reshuffle. He obviously has something on Cameron. Either that or he is going to resign at the next election, anyway, so does not care, if he ever did.

Eloethan Sun 23-Nov-14 19:40:41

My son and his family live in Chingford. I don't know who he will vote for but it won't be IDS.

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 19:45:41

I find this incident, and the non-reportage of it in the national press, very confusing.

Fiona O'Donnell seems to have been the only one to tweet about it, yet Labour supporters are seizing on it as an example of IDS's (and by association, the conservatives') cavalier attitude to domestic violence.

I doubt very much whether he'd have been laughing at the plight of the young woman involved. We aren't told at what point, or at what comment, he did in fact laugh.

But don't let that get in the way of a good conservative-bashing-fest!

Penstemmon Sun 23-Nov-14 20:09:13

The case itself is worrying. Never mind IDS response!
How could it have got to appeal? Where the f*ck is common sense?

GrannyTwice Sun 23-Nov-14 20:23:26

I'm not confused Ana. Why would the right wing press report on a story that puts the Conservatives in a bad light? I read about in the Guardian of course

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 20:34:41

Did you? Strangely, I can find no trace of such a report on google. Can't have made the headlines, which is quite surprising.

Nonu Sun 23-Nov-14 21:07:43

This incident has not appeared in any newspaper I read , bizarre

GrannyTwice Sun 23-Nov-14 21:09:36

It was in the Society section which is in the Guardian every Wednesday - it's 3/4 pages devoted to issues on the welfare state, education, health etc. I'm guessing that it will only be a headline if she wins

GrannyTwice Sun 23-Nov-14 21:10:21

Not bizarre at all Nonu

Penstemmon Sun 23-Nov-14 21:15:03

FYI

Nonu Sun 23-Nov-14 21:21:21

It is bizarre GRANNY because as I stated, it has not appeared in any newspaper |I read !

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 21:22:26

Thank you, Penstemmon, but I was referring to the allegation that IDS 'laughed' during the discussion of the case, which is the subject of the OP.

thatbags Sun 23-Nov-14 21:39:16

It is not clear (really clear) from the links the OP gives what IDS is, alledgedly, laughing about. What is implied is that he was laughing "as" (that's a quote, which I presume means at the same time as) Ed Miliband spoke of the bedroom tax case in question. He may have been laughing at Ed M (plenty of people do) or at something else entirely. The tweet is just party political muck stirring—like so much else that happens in the HoC. sad

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 21:49:58

Exactly my point, thatbags.

durhamjen Sun 23-Nov-14 22:29:18

It's not the first time he's done it. He even laughed in the debate about food banks last year.

Elegran Sun 23-Nov-14 22:49:17

What was he laughing at? Was he laughing at food banks and domestic violence or at something else entirely? Do we know?

If we don't know, why is anyone assuming that he finds violence and poverty funny? Is it because they WANT to believe that he is a Victorian pantomime villain, gleefully grinding the faces of the poor and helpless into the dust? The way that in the early days of Socialism people believed that they had seen Russians in the streets of London, stamping Moscow snow from their boots as they plotted the overthrow of capitalism?

durhamjen Sun 23-Nov-14 23:41:33

Funny you should say that, Elegran.

That's exactly what he is doing, grinding the faces of the poor into the dust.

A report on a debate held late last year on the growing need for food banks demonstrated that IDS and the Conservatives are in the habit of responding to serious matters with jeers and smirks:

"Barry Gardiner, Labour MP for Brent, said it was “extraordinary” to see Mr Duncan Smith smirking as it was pointed out that half a million people are now using food banks - and the minister refused to answer any questions directly, instead leaving them to be fielded by his deputy, Esther McVey."

"The Trussell Trust, the nation's largest provider of food banks, with almost 400 branches said it was “disappointed” by the attitude of those who jeered."

"As Mr Duncan Smith and his colleagues left, the speaker John Bercow said he had no power to stop them, but said the view that it was a disgrace there was no minister there ”may be widely shared"."

IDS's customary smirks are either an involuntary response to discomfort at being unable to deal with a probing question or they demonstrate that he really thinks matters of poverty and injustice are amusing. Either way, it is worrying that such a person has ministerial responsibility.

thatbags Mon 24-Nov-14 10:04:43

Are you sure they are responding to the need for food banks with jeers and smirks rather than reacting to what the opposition is saying with jeers and smirks?

I ask that because I think the latter scenario is quite likely and I don't think the former scenario is (though I'm not saying it isn't possible).
