the fact that Ian Duncan Smith laughed

Riverwalk Tue 25-Nov-14 11:08:30

So funny! grin

Ana Tue 25-Nov-14 11:06:34

Oh, please...they're obviously spoofs! grin

Were you really serious, durhamjen?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 25-Nov-14 11:03:35

I find it a little bit worrying that you thought that was a real IDS Twitter account jendurham. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 25-Nov-14 10:53:54

You don't actually need the little blue tick to recognise that though.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 25-Nov-14 10:53:25

Some of those are quite funny. The one with Farage and his teacup made me laugh aloud.

They are obviously from a spoof account. (no little blue tick)

I think these are Iain Duncan Smith's tweets.
I am worried about these.

rosesarered Mon 24-Nov-14 23:02:17

Though you are right Penstemmon and Ana about the shortage of bums on seats.

rosesarered Mon 24-Nov-14 23:00:25

IDS 'laughing at something' [which we don't know what it is, could be ED Mill. pulling another funny face] could be anything actually. Are we actually wasting time with this?He must be tired, with all that grinding of the faces of the poor then, but still has some energy to laugh, the man should be taken out and shot! Why waste time with a trial.

Ana Mon 24-Nov-14 22:41:14

Yes, I certainly agree with you there, Penstemmon.

It's shocking to see all those empty seats, especially when the issue is something which has been highlighted by the media and is of great interest to the general public.

Penstemmon Mon 24-Nov-14 22:34:48

That is the downside of our Parliamentary adversarial system! Politicians use derision, smirking and general yah, boo, hissing to undermine one another and point score. it is 'traditional' but really not terribly constructive!
I am often saddened to see how few MPs are in the house when ,what I consider, important issues are being 'debated'.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 24-Nov-14 10:30:30

Ana they must have cluttered off before the end of the session. (food banks)

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 24-Nov-14 10:29:08

No matter which they were laughing at, the woman's case or the comments of the other lot, you would think they could manage to debate a serious subject without resorting to laughter. No wonder people are looking for another party to vote for.

Overgrown schoolboys on the one side, dunderheads on the other. hmm

Very sad.

"As Mr Duncan Smith and his colleagues left, the speaker John Bercow said he had no power to stop them, but said the view that it was a disgrace there was no minister there ”may be widely shared"."

I don't understand that bit. It was a disgrace there was no minister there?

thatbags Mon 24-Nov-14 10:04:43

Are you sure they are responding to the need for food banks with jeers and smirks rather than reacting to what the opposition is saying with jeers and smirks?

I ask that because I think the latter scenario is quite likely and I don't think the former scenario is (though I'm not saying it isn't possible).

Eloethan Mon 24-Nov-14 01:39:05

A report on a debate held late last year on the growing need for food banks demonstrated that IDS and the Conservatives are in the habit of responding to serious matters with jeers and smirks:

"Barry Gardiner, Labour MP for Brent, said it was “extraordinary” to see Mr Duncan Smith smirking as it was pointed out that half a million people are now using food banks - and the minister refused to answer any questions directly, instead leaving them to be fielded by his deputy, Esther McVey."

"The Trussell Trust, the nation's largest provider of food banks, with almost 400 branches said it was “disappointed” by the attitude of those who jeered."

"As Mr Duncan Smith and his colleagues left, the speaker John Bercow said he had no power to stop them, but said the view that it was a disgrace there was no minister there ”may be widely shared"."

IDS's customary smirks are either an involuntary response to discomfort at being unable to deal with a probing question or they demonstrate that he really thinks matters of poverty and injustice are amusing. Either way, it is worrying that such a person has ministerial responsibility.

durhamjen Sun 23-Nov-14 23:41:33

Funny you should say that, Elegran.

www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=8&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CFgQFjAH&url=http%3A%2F%2Fanotherangryvoice.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F12%2Fiain-duncan-smith-gagging-trussell-trust.html&ei=T29yVIboH4KyaZ3igoAD&usg=AFQjCNGFMOHrMtQ9oWk34sf_AmI6krlZ3g&bvm=bv.80185997,d.d2s

That's exactly what he is doing, grinding the faces of the poor into the dust.

Elegran Sun 23-Nov-14 22:49:17

What was he laughing at? Was he laughing at food banks and domestic violence or at something else entirely? Do we know?

If we don't know, why is anyone assuming that he finds violence and poverty funny? Is it because they WANT to believe that he is a Victorian pantomime villain, gleefully grinding the faces of the poor and helpless into the dust? The way that in the early days of Socialism people believed that they had seen Russians in the streets of London, stamping Moscow snow from their boots as they plotted the overthrow of capitalism?

durhamjen Sun 23-Nov-14 22:29:18

It's not the first time he's done it. He even laughed in the debate about food banks last year.

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 21:49:58

Exactly my point, thatbags.

thatbags Sun 23-Nov-14 21:39:16

It is not clear (really clear) from the links the OP gives what IDS is, alledgedly, laughing about. What is implied is that he was laughing "as" (that's a quote, which I presume means at the same time as) Ed Miliband spoke of the bedroom tax case in question. He may have been laughing at Ed M (plenty of people do) or at something else entirely. The tweet is just party political muck stirring—like so much else that happens in the HoC. sad

Ana Sun 23-Nov-14 21:22:26

Thank you, Penstemmon, but I was referring to the allegation that IDS 'laughed' during the discussion of the case, which is the subject of the OP.

Nonu Sun 23-Nov-14 21:21:21

It is bizarre GRANNY because as I stated, it has not appeared in any newspaper |I read !

Penstemmon Sun 23-Nov-14 21:15:03

FYI

GrannyTwice Sun 23-Nov-14 21:10:21

Not bizarre at all Nonu

GrannyTwice Sun 23-Nov-14 21:09:36

It was in the Society section which is in the Guardian every Wednesday - it's 3/4 pages devoted to issues on the welfare state, education, health etc. I'm guessing that it will only be a headline if she wins
