Breaking News - Allegedly 10 people killed at office of satirical magazine in Paris

Whilst we don't have all the facts, I have read that at least ten people have been killed at the offices of a satirical French magazine in Paris where gunmen have opened fire.

Given the troubled times we are living in should publications try to rein in the content of anything that might be deemed controversial to certain groups because scenarios like this one will make it hardly worth the loss of life/ves, or should free speech prevail at all costs?

Yes Tegan. But we do stop! We dont hold grudges, or have to have the last word, or hold things against each other.
Or feel wounded. Or bury things that were said.

Shouting again Nonu? Sorry if I mixed it up but I do think my meaning was obvious.

rosequartz Sat 17-Jan-15 17:16:08

They are not trying to impose their faith on us
petallus I may have a naive and simplistic view of all this but I think that is the underlying aim in the long-term.

I've had a few Christians come to my door trying to convert me in my time. Never any Muslims though.

But who knows. I'm no expert.

petallus Sat 17-Jan-15 17:28:05

I don't have to read HJ. I can guess what he says.

He is very into his religion.

Nonu Sat 17-Jan-15 17:28:05

Oops I will have be very careful about that soutra.
No need to apologise , even you, can make mistakes . None, of us is perfect.

I don't think preaching at your doorstep is the way they aim to try to change things.

I don't think that normal Muslims would do that anyway.

Interrogationtastic, soon! Not sure what you're on about. Sorry. But I'll say this: when so many brilliant writers have so much to say, and say it so well, on the subject of freedom and what it means to be tolerant and so forth, I'm really enjoying reading their stuff. Of the links I've posted, I think the one by Dan Hodges is my favourite (and it did alter my view of what this is all about, though not drastically; I think he is right that the issue is not really free speech so much as secular toleration), though there is a subtlety in Jacobson's article that I appeals as well.

I don't do black and white when it comes to opinions. More smudgy grey on most subjects. As I think I have intimated more than once (well, certainly once), I have found all the articles I've linked to very interesting and all of them have helped me develop what is my current view of the role of free speech and toleration.

Hope that answers some of your queries.

thatbags Sat 17-Jan-15 17:39:46

PS and my reason for posting the links is that I think it possible some other people on GN will find some or all of the articles interesting too. I'm just disseminating. Of course nobody has to read them. I'd never heard of Jacobson before but from reading that article I now know he is a good writer.

BTW, petallus, he's not writing about his religion in this article.

petallus Sat 17-Jan-15 17:50:45

I have read him quite a bit and never liked him much. He goes on about being Jewish a lot. Anyway, I'm off to read the link now.

It's a good thing bags that someone is there to help your feeble intellect to approach subjects about which you are patently ignorant and ill-equipped to understand. You must be so grateful.

janeainsworth Sat 17-Jan-15 18:26:17

grin

Soutra Sat 17-Jan-15 18:29:52

Are you sure you can grin with impunity, janeA? Do we have the freedom to grin ?

rosequartz Sat 17-Jan-15 18:54:47

How many shades of grey, thatbags? grin
