Quite rightly he's being suspended but should the BBC be cancelling episodes of Top Gear?

If a man working in a factory punches a colleague he would probably be sacked but I doubt they'd remove the product he was making from the shelves.

Me too-I was mangled in a terrible car crash when I was 19- due to a friend speeding- 6 months in hospital, 2 years to learn to walk again, and now a knees that will soon need replacing due to the consequences- it does change the way you see things.

Union members who need to be dragged out and shot in front of their families (by someone who ever uses public transport btw)

finding the suffering of cows falling about with BSE the most hilarious thing ever?

Blind people, handicapped people, ethnic minorities being the butt of jokes- people who are so depressed and without hope and decide to commit suicide a pain in the *e- and more. And it is bitter and twisted to not fall about laughing ??? I'd say that, yes, it does say a lot about those who support him and their own views. Merlot- are the above views really a great example for grand-children? Really?

loopylou Thu 12-Mar-15 19:19:53

Impressionable young (mainly male) young drivers are influenced by a range of media, and yes, TG is one, where irresponsible driving is considered funny (see eloethan's post above) and 'clever'

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 19:23:19

Please don't criticise the examples we set for our grandchildren. You don't know me and you have absolutely no right to judge me. angry

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 19:23:37

That was to granjura

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:25:12

"having spent a number of years working with young people whose lives and brains have been wrecked irretrievably through car crashes, and supported their devastated families whose dreams have been destroyed," (Quoting loopylou)

Considering the fact that before 2002 Top Gear was a much tamer version of the present show - and I assume loopylou is now retired - it just doesn't sound very plausible.

granjura Thu 12-Mar-15 19:26:59

No judgement meant at all- but in response to your post saying 'you can't see anything wrong with GCs watching TG- and no harm done.

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 19:27:42

This is the Mirror's take.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:30:07

The fact that you were in an accident due to speeding, when you were 19, rather illustrates the point that accidents have always happened. hmm

I think the grin to illustrate my laughing at that post, was well desrved.

loopylou Thu 12-Mar-15 19:31:00

You certainly don't know me - I am not retired jingl, so your assumptions are far from true. I'm 61 and strongly object to you doubting my post and insinuating I am being untruthful.
I also still volunteer for a head injury charity that mainly works with the age group I used to nurse.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:32:49

From the Mirror article

"Auntie is a great institution but she’s prone to being prim and priggish, self-satisfied and smug. "

Yeah. And not only "Auntie". hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:34:17

Maybe. But I'll bet those head injuries and the like you used to nurse go back a darned sight further than 2002.

durhamjen Thu 12-Mar-15 19:34:20

Read it, thatbags. I would not suffer if I did not see him again.
We, the licence payers, pay his wages. I resent paying anything towards keeping him on the screens, and cannot understand how he has lasted so long.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:35:07

Nop way was I insinuating that you wwere being untruthful! Where did that come from? hmm

Ana Thu 12-Mar-15 19:36:35

I thught the comment about JC 'losing his looks' was funny jingl because the article was written by a friend of his, and it was obviously meant to be tongue-in-cheek. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:37:36

My post of 19:25:12 was in response to jendurham's post previously.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 19:40:51

Ana confused

Never mind.

granjura Thu 12-Mar-15 20:00:04

Jingle: Maybe. But I'll bet those head injuries and the like you used to nurse go back a darned sight further than 2002.

This is totally irrelevant- my accident was in 1970. But we are talking about someone glorifying speeding since 2002 and indeed now- and the use of mobiles whilst driving (at speed) etc. I'm sure some people sped with their horse and carts (Ben Hurr)- but how is it relevant here?

Merlot, again I am sorry if you saw my post as 'judgement'- but if someone makes statements on a Forum, it is only fair to expect that some will disagree or counter.

The Beeb spotted a winner and soon ditched Angela Rippon.

Somehow my well mannered, talented, hard working DGCs who are a credit to their parents are not suffering a damaged childhood due to being allowed to watch TG.

How have we managed to get away with it? hmm

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 20:05:04

I don't think JC "glorifies" speeding; I think he argues against some speed limits on some roads in some circumstances.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 20:12:34

I'll bet some GNrs would love to see Angela Ripon back. grin

Eloethan Thu 12-Mar-15 20:17:10

Noel Edmonds - who is responsible for such broadcasting masterpieces as "Noel's House Party" (not forgetting Mr Blobby) and, worse still, "Deal or No Deal"- weighs in to have a go at the BBC for "failing appallingly to to give Clarkson the support that such a mercurial talent requires".

Of course Noel Edmonds' enthusiasm for giving the BBC a kicking would have nothing to do with the fact, as stated in the article, that:

"In March, Edmonds revealed that he and a group of investors wanted to buy the corporation and run it as a private enterprise, saying that a renewal of the licence fee agreement would be “as futile as giving medicine to a corpse”.

Ana Thu 12-Mar-15 20:21:41

Yes, I did quite like that last quote! grin

granjura Thu 12-Mar-15 20:28:26

mg- my grand-kids watch too- and they have also survived ;)

rosequartz Thu 12-Mar-15 20:53:30

Australian drink driving rules are stricter than the UK and I think if JC was seen driving along with a 'tinnie' in his hand he would have had short shrift from any police officer - who I doubt would have been impressed by his celebrity.

Are all the DGC mentioned in above posts drivers? Or about to become drivers?

Mishap Thu 12-Mar-15 21:22:01

Loopy - your experiences sound much like mine. Once you have mopped up the relatives of young men who thought driving fast was fun, as they sit by the bed watching their unconscious unrecognisable child, you have no patience at all for the likes of Clarkson. Head injuries are common in road accidents and wreck lives. Idiots like Clarkson encourage the view that cars are toys - they are not. They are a means of getting from A to B. Children who watch the programme do not suffer a "damaged childhood", but they absorb attitudes that make them more at risk when they become young drivers.

If only you could have met the beautiful highly intelligent teenage girl I worked with. She admitted that she just drove too fast and she paid the price - she will never be able to speak again, and has to communicate with an electronic writer round her neck. She feels isolated from her peers and her social life and confidence are gone. And she is one of the lucky ones - she can walk, and is continent, and can remember what day it is.

No - I have no time for Clarkson. Let us hope I never have to glimpse him on the box again.
