at the age of only 66.

How wonderful that TP got his wish of dying at home. At least he avoided a long lingering death - what a relief for his family.

I remember him saying he would like a glass of single malt whisky on his last day on earth!

RIP flowers

There goes another brilliant person!

durhamjen Thu 12-Mar-15 21:20:17

Nankate, does that mean he had to drink a glass every day, just in case?

Started reading his short stories about the carpet people with my grandson, but he just didn't get it, and he worried about where they were in my house, so we went back to Harry Potter.

Hope there's a nice cynical quote from him before he died. I like his take on Death.

Ana Thu 12-Mar-15 21:22:36

Those were his daughter's words, durhamjen, but none the worse for that.

durhamjen Thu 12-Mar-15 22:09:35

What, Ana? " Don't think of it as dying, just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush." Pure Terry Pratchett.

Just like Penarthgran, my son introduced me to the writings of Terry Pratchett. I haven't read his books since my son was a young boy but I will go back to them someday. A brilliant, inventive mind.

Eloethan Thu 12-Mar-15 22:31:47

I've never read any of his books, probably because I'm one of those horribly unimaginative people he talked about in one of his quotes. I liked the way he came across in interviews. I loved the quotes - thanks Anya.

Deedaa Thu 12-Mar-15 23:04:28

If you loved the quotes Eloethan do try the books. His ideas and use of language were so clever. So sad that there will be no more books to enjoy.

Fili Fri 13-Mar-15 05:20:40

A read his book right now..Very sad. Rest in peace Terry

thatbags Fri 13-Mar-15 06:40:06

I'm glad he supported Dignity in Dying. May he rest in peace.

NanKate Fri 13-Mar-15 06:58:20

Durhamjen I like your observation about having his whisky daily. smile.

Thanks Thatbags for the link of D in D I will investigate.

NanKate Fri 13-Mar-15 15:24:12

Just read in the paper Sir T liked brandy not whisky. Just to get everything accurate.

granjura Fri 13-Mar-15 17:38:38

There is a lovely tribute to him on the Dignity in dying website.

Starling Fri 13-Mar-15 20:10:12

He seemed to have that quality of making people feel that they knew him as a friend.

Retiredguy Fri 13-Mar-15 21:26:56

“Night poured over the desert. It came suddenly, in purple. In the clear air, the stars drilled down out of the sky, reminding any thoughtful watcher that it is in the deserts and high places that religions are generated. When men see nothing but bottomless infinity over their heads they have always had a driving and desperate urge to find someone to put in the way.”

Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP) in 'Jingo'.

Oops ! Didn't get to finish.

rg that's lovely, thanks for posting.

feetlebaum Fri 13-Mar-15 21:52:33

And as that quotation from Jingo reminds us, he couldn't half write!

Eloethan Fri 13-Mar-15 22:20:05

I have never been able to get into fantasy books but this thread has encouraged me to at least have a go at one of Terry Pratchett's.

Ana Fri 13-Mar-15 22:24:49

Who's Jingo?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 13-Mar-15 22:52:09

I had a quick look on Amazon. No way! All sounds like total crap.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 13-Mar-15 22:53:40

That quote - " Don't think of it as dying, just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush."

I don't get that. It doesn't mnake any sense. confused

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 13-Mar-15 22:54:36

Oh! Should it be "Don't think of it as dying young..."?

That would make more sense.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 13-Mar-15 22:59:19

This is a better one:

"Time is like a drug. Too much of it kills you".

Ana Fri 13-Mar-15 23:03:36

That doesn't make sense either. What about all those who actually do die young?
