Local Council Elections - Only 2 to choose from!

Well, I've just spent almost 2 hours with one of the candidates for our Local Council election. I had emailed him because he had posted a leaflet while I was in, but hadn't bothered to knock, and there were questions I wanted to ask.

To give him his due, he not only responded to my email, but also called round the following day. I was at work that day! When I told him this, to his credit he asked if there was a time that might suit me.

I didn't think for a minute that he would be able to spare the time on the eve of polling day, but he did.

I have saved every election leaflet that I received, and realised that when it came to the Council Elections I had received only ONE leaflet shock I went online to see who was standing, and was amazed to find there were only 2 choices, the chap I had contacted, and someone from the Greens, who didn't even live within the ward. How am I supposed to make a judgment based on that? I don't know her policies on local issues, so, sorry but I won't be voting for her!

Do many other GN'ers have Local Council Elections, as well as those for MP's?

By the way, the choice for local MP is much broader that that for the council, there is even someone standing for the Communist Party!

PS Apologies to pedants, it should have (of course) read "Only 2 to choose between" grin

Apparently, less people are putting themselves up for local election councillors, and some have no opposition whatsoever.
I dont know whether it is because of the cuts that have to be made, and no one fancies doing them.

As I understand it, they receive £4k per year, (which depending on the hours they put in, is a fair bit below minimum wage) so I can't see anyone doing it for the money!

You've got to vote for him phoenix. After he did all that. Bless.

We are lucky as there are no local council elections in our ward this year. We have only the 6 candidates for the general election to choose between.

Yes, even if he didn't know about the Sandi Toksvig Party! grin

[Ana] I think it researching it might have been first thing on his list when he got home!

A very well informed and thought provoking conversation about affordable housing in the area. Wont go into it now, as I'm off to bed (plus some might find it boring!

Apparently there are local elections in our area too. Not that I've seen or heard from any of the candidates. I couldn't tell you which parties are standing. I guess I will have to make it my business to find out before I go to the polling station tomorrow.
I did have an interesting and informative door step chat with the Labour parliamentary candidate though.

Our local elections are lively and the candidates have been campaigning hard - we are awash with leaflets. Local councillors here seem to work quite hard and in the main are responsive to requests although not all of them have got to grips with e-mail which I find shocking especially as they have all had paid for training and laptops.
