Gove and the Human Rights Act

After the atrocities of WW11 Churchill was one of the instigators of the European convention (EC) and UK was one of the first signatories. Up until 1988 our only recourse was to go to the European court of HR, but the Labour government brought in the HRA in 1988 and so we now have recourse in British courts.
HRA 1988 - contains the same rights as the EC.

Right to-
Life
No torture or be threatened to be treated in an inhumane or degrading way
Free from slavery or forced labour
Fair trial
Not punished for something against the law
respect for private and family life, home and correspondence
freedom of thought and consience
religion
freedom of expression assembly and association
marriage and family
right not to be descrimated against in relation to EC
education
free election
abolition of death penalty

Now can anyone persuade me why we should be thinking of abolishing this?

Both are important.

If you can see this, it might help to relieve some tension.

Quite therapeutic, I found.

I enjoyed that...thanks for the link janerowena grin

Thanks for the links, dj. I've read them both. The first is a little more informative than the second. Most of what the second says is also said in the first, though the second also mentions another, quite separate court.

While I don't claim to understand all the issues in detail, it does rather look to me as if we don't need to worry that our human rights will be eroded away by this government. The issues are complex, even to lawyers, and I think that will necessitate slow change, if there is any, in very small steps. Time will tell.

thatbags Tue 12-May-15 20:51:54

Crossed posts, janer. I'll read your link now.

thatbags Tue 12-May-15 20:53:01

Or maybe I won't! wink

Ana Tue 12-May-15 21:03:16

A reasoned post, thatbags, but not one which will cut much ice on here, I fear.

GrannyTwice Tue 12-May-15 21:20:56

If our human rights aren't eroded away it will be because it will prove impossible to actually come up with a legislative solution - good article in today's DT by a barrister - can't do link

After how the election turned out, compared with what was talked about on gransnet, I dont think this site was influential!

durhamjen Tue 12-May-15 21:45:11

How do you know, soon?
Do you know how many Gransnetters there are and how we all voted and where we all live?

soontobe Tue 12-May-15 21:54:09

In the grand scheme of things, and bearing in mind all the left wing things that were talked about, and bearing in mind the result, well there is no more to say really.

soontobe Tue 12-May-15 21:57:12

From having a brief look at chat forums on the internet, there are a large number of them, mainly hobby ones. Male groups as well as women groups. Gransnet is but one of many.

Iam64 Wed 13-May-15 08:39:43

Soontobe, as you regularly ask questions of other contributors, I hope you won't mind me asking you a question.

Are you really the innocent abroad you present yourself as here?

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 08:45:27

I dont mind you asking me questions.
I am what I appear to be on gransnet.
I know quite a lot about some subjects, and not so much about others. I thought that was the same for most people in life, but perhaps not.

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 08:47:31

Which bits do you think I know a lot, and which bits not? Is that your actual confusion?

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 08:50:23

Or is it a case of you are surprised what I come up with?

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 08:53:43

Ah I get it. You thought that gransnet was a very important chat forum.
Have you seen how many others there are.
If you put in any hobby for example, under the sun, and put chat forum after it, up one will pop.

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 08:54:59

Not to mention Facebook groups and twitter.

Ariadne Wed 13-May-15 09:13:32

How to divert a thread is something at which you are quite accomplished, soontobe!

rosequartz Wed 13-May-15 09:32:02

I belong to Ravelry as well.
I haven't looked much recently but I don't think they discussed the general election to a great extent on there.
I wouldn't have thought most hobby forums would tbh

soontobe Wed 13-May-15 09:50:57

I apologise if I have diverted. I never meant to.
This is indeed an important topic.
Sorry. I will need to pay more attention to that.

Soutra Wed 13-May-15 10:54:53

Oh dear, another example of stating the @*#*@ obvious.

But I would be careful of surfing chat rooms indiscriminately, you never know what you might land on!
(Anybody remember the Yamaha site of Withany's sorry tale? grin)

rosequartz Wed 13-May-15 11:03:47

soon Are you really the innocent abroad you present yourself as here? as Iam64 asked?

Or are you really a journalist trying to get grannies and grandads to divulge their innermost thoughts? grin
