Not that I am suggesting such a thing, but here is a thought-provoking article from the Guardian :
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/01/david-cameron-moriarty-downing-street-radical-thatcher

(For those who don't like links, the title of this thread gives a good clue, so you can just go from there. smile)

Right, got it.

The People's Assembly march today.

www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/20/tens-thousands-rally-uk-protest-against-austerity

I wonder who does the counting; there's a bit of a difference between 70 and 150 thousand.

trisher Sat 20-Jun-15 16:14:55

I think it was the debt they sold dj and this is the company- may be wrong.

durhamjen Sat 20-Jun-15 11:28:29

Have they not already hived off NATS and the Student Loan Company?

www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/you-may-disagree-with-him-but-jeremy-corbyn-has-a-key-role-in-labour-race-10325796.html

Why we need Jeremy Corbyn.

Anyone who doubts that they are in it for the money look at the "Top Trumps" they are selling off.
Anyone who would like to object please sign

Only if I then see Labour voting as an opposition and not backing the Tories or abstaining.
Even if that happens, the Tories can win.

( Do I hear cries of Oh, Goody at the back, there?)

durhamjen Sat 20-Jun-15 00:31:36

I think you are up too late, FarNorth. That's what's making you pessimistic.

Will seeing this later on today cheer you up?

FarNorth Sat 20-Jun-15 00:23:49

Unfortunately I can imagine him getting them, all the same.

durhamjen Sat 20-Jun-15 00:02:06

Who would you prefer to be in charge, a shrew and malevolent psychopath, or this idiot?

www.politics.co.uk//news/2015/06/15/boris-johnson-girls-are-hormone-filled-and-prone-to-weeping

Can you imagine giving him the keys to number 10?

durhamjen Mon 15-Jun-15 22:50:22

An article about Cameron's speech on the Magna Carta.

www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2015/06/15/cameron-has-betrayed-every-principle-he-mentions-in-his-magn

Shows just how hypocritical the man is.

durhamjen Sun 14-Jun-15 22:54:49

Here's another interesting article about Thatcher's economics.

www.theguardian.com/business/economics-blog/2015/jun/10/growth-what-growth-thatcherism-fails-to-produce-the-goods

I bet Cameron and Osborne do not read it.

durhamjen Sun 14-Jun-15 22:30:33

At least the Royal Mail share price has not shot up like it did the last time. They were sold for £5 each, and have since come down to £4.94, so the companies that bought them will not have made a killing yet.

durhamjen Sun 14-Jun-15 22:26:33

Perhaps they could explain this as well, FarNorth, while they are about it.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/jun/14/tory-welfare-cuts-would-hit-poorest-third-of-uk-families-research-shows

Does Osborne have any friends left?

soontobe Sun 14-Jun-15 19:46:09

It doesnt seem right at all.

FarNorth Sun 14-Jun-15 19:27:04

Maybe GN-ers who think the Conservatives are just the ones to sort out the economy for us, could explain it?
And I promise not to snipe or howl or anything else unpleasant so don't be shy, people. smile

trisher Sun 14-Jun-15 19:08:50

Ah well- Mail gone, just a bank to go, then Dave and George's mates will be laughing all the way to the bank we used to own. How else could you buy a majority share in something, with someone elses money, to get it out of the S--t. Wait till it turned the corner and then sell it off without even making the money you spent.

durhamjen Sun 14-Jun-15 14:47:17

Interesting article about the Royal Mail sell-off. It's been done already. That was quick, but I suppose if you are selling something to your friends and do not want the general public to know too much about it, that's the way to do it.

durhamjen Thu 11-Jun-15 22:37:04

Bad timing, or maybe good timing depending on how close you live to the march.

Eloethan Thu 11-Jun-15 22:11:39

No - we're going on holiday to Cornwall with the family on the 20th.

durhamjen Thu 11-Jun-15 19:20:16

Eloethan, are you going on the People's Assembly march on 20th?

Gracesgran Thu 11-Jun-15 08:23:35

Thank you for the link Eloethan. Wow, that is stunning. I can't believe the Economics degrees do not have a dissertation. Surely the point of any degree is to learn to reflect and analyse at a higher level and the dissertation shows how much you can think rather than how much you can regurgitate. I am shocked that this has been allowed to happen and do believe that how it is set up will stifle new thinking.

Eloethan Thu 11-Jun-15 00:19:53

Gracesgran I wouldn't worry too much about not having done economics. I met a lecturer in economics at a People's Assembly meeting a year or so ago and she said that there is a growing feeling that the economics being taught in university is not fit for purpose.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/28/economics-students-neoclassical-theory

If you're interested the above link expands on that opinion.

Gracesgran Wed 10-Jun-15 23:40:21

"Wasn't it Thatcher who got rid of Keynesian thinking?"

I think it was Jen. "The market" has been king for some years now and the swerve in that direction seemed to loose the macro-economics on the way. Having said that, what do I know, I wish I had done economics but I didn't smile

durhamjen Wed 10-Jun-15 23:14:35

He wouldn't, would he? And short change all those hardworking taxpayers?

FarNorth Wed 10-Jun-15 22:35:47

It's fine if you'd like to give a bargain to the purchaser.

durhamjen Wed 10-Jun-15 22:31:38

Losing £13 billion on the sale of RBS shares does not sound very balanced to me.
