Talking about austerity, I have just read that KPMG have said that the living wage would only cost 1.3% of the national wage bill, but lift six million people out of poverty. They are asking for voluntary adoption of the living wage policy. Brave of them. I wonder how much input KPMG had into austerity.
When the British banks almost went bust, Gordon Brown saved them by printing money as in quantitative easing and giving it to the banks to lend. If he had not done that we would possibly have been in the same state as Greece. He was praised by the whole of the world for that, although not by some on here.
Why can Europe not do something similar for the Greek bank, but put conditions on the lending? Or has that already happened?

Just how arrogant are the anti-EU Conservatives?
(143 Posts)Conservatives for Britain - that's what the group of MPs are calling themselves. They may as well have called themselves the "We are the only ones who are right" party. I am sure that all Conservatives, indeed all politicians basically want the best for Britain they just disagree on the way to get it.
Conservatives for Britain seems to me rather like the BNP taking ownership of the union flag as if they are the only ones who really support Britain. It also reminds me of those Ukippers (on other forums) talking about coming out of the EU and saying such things as "every sane person would agree" or anyone who wants the best for the UK would agree" as if they have been told by God that this is what we need to do. Such arrogance makes me so angry and I don't get angry often
Absolutely Eloethan.
I'm pleased that Greece said no too, but I'm worried about what is going to happen next. The whole situation is dreadful and the Greek people don't deserve to be treated in such a way.
As a right wing Tory, David Cameron wants Europe to ditch it's long held Social Democracy, and adopt our 30 odd year held Anglo-Saxon low income tax deregulated free market model. But this isnt going to happen because for this to happen, all EU countries have got to agree to it.
And im pleased to see that Greece voted no to a deal which included Austerity.
On May 7th, 37 odd percent of a 66 odd per cent turn out, gave Cameron and Osborne permission to continue their ideological agenda of running down the State. Austerity is just a media tag.
Sorry, grannyo, I got the wrong granny!!
Thank you gg, I think what I really feel is that it seems such a pity that other political views are impossible to discuss in a thoughtful way without being shouted down and the person putting forward these opinions being made to feel somehow inadequate and almost wicked!! I feel other people's input would widen a discussion and make it more balanced and interesting, they might even have a valid point now and again which could be food for thought, but obviously this is unlikely to happen, which is a shame. Not to worry, I shall stick to Arts and Crafts, it's safer!!!
It's raining hard here, but we hope for better things later on!!!! Hope the sun eventually shines for you too!
nn - I have given up (wish we had an ignore button) and I know many posters feel the same
my hope is that if the usual suspects keep it up no-one will respond and they will eventually tone it down
hope the weather clears up and you have a nice day
.
Well, there is really no answer to that is there!! I don't think that I have been aggressive nor rude to anyone. My first post was three words, my second was asking a perfectly valid genuine question, my third was was to acknowledge that someone's comment made me smile! again, no aggression! I have no desire to argue or quarrel with anyone and your comments only confirm that this thread or others like are definitely not for me. Enjoy your day.
Did I need permission nigglynellie? I have never come across that before on a forum. You have made three posts on this thread which would, under normal logic, constitute joining in the conversation; or were you just talking to yourself? No, I see you replied to someone else.
In your first post you said "why is it ok, to reveal one's political beliefs on the left wing of politics with pride, which is fine, but to admit to supporting a candidate on the equivalent right with the same pride ..." I answered that post clarifying my OP which is where this thread started.
You also say, in your second post that you "know what to expect". Your first post appeared to be critical of other posters on here so it would be reasonable to think you might have been met in kind in the past if you launch into the middle of a thread with a criticism of others on the forum. In fact, if you commonly jump down other posters throats, as you did mine, I am not surprised if you have found people get a little annoyed.
Why are you talking to me Gracegran? I haven't asked who the Conservatives for the EU are! In fact I haven't joined in this conversation in any way, and have no intentions of so doing!
They actually mean they are "Conservatives against the EU" nigglynellie and by describing their view as "for Britain" are inferring any "Conservatives for the EU" are not for Britain. It still seems to be very arrogant to me to think you are the only ones whose opinion may be in support of our country and my problem isn't really anything to do with left or right just "I am right" egotism.
"Conservatives for our rich mates whether British or Not."?
To go back to the OP. If one lot are calling themselves "Conservatives for Britain" can we legitimately call the rest of the party "Conservatives against Britain"? Given the level of cuts, the institutions sold off, the suffering of ordinary people and the favouring of foreign billionaires it would seem to be appropriate!
I'm from the Left of politics, almost always have been. As a young 'un I wanted to be a Tory to be the opposite from my parents, but I knew I had to justify this. My research shoved me further left, so the Tory party had to manage without me!!
BUT, people of the baby boomer era and older who are conservatives have, imho, been let down by their party. It is no longer small c conservative party, trying to preserve all that is traditional and good, but more like the old laissez-faire Liberals, with the devil-take-the-hindmost attitude. The poor are blamed for their fate, and business, including big business and global mega business is what they look after at the expense of the rest of us.
I blame Thatcher. She adored her Dad, who was ultra Right. When he served on the Poor Board, people who came looking for poor relief to feed their families just went home empty handed when he was sitting, and starved.
Even the Labour parties of the world aren't what they used to be: dinosaurs like Arthur Thingy, the miners leader, hurt the Left.
Our last Labour leader in Australia that was in any way inspiring was Bob Hawke in the 1980s. I did like Kevin Rudd, but he got rolled.
If you don't agree with the views of the OP, nigglynellie, then of course you are free to say so and to explain how the situation looks to you.
You are also, of course, free to proclaim your pride in right-wing policies/politicians whenever you think that is relevant, and/or to start threads to do so.
Spot on! You've made me smile and that feels good!
nn - the answer is lots of right-thinking people
As you say I do know what to expect and for that reason I would steer well clear of any political discussion on here. I wonder how many other people feel the same.
Why would you think that, durhamjen?
What a ridiculous thing to say.
You can write what you want about anyone you support, nellie. But I think the headline should give you a clue about what to expect. If you want to praise a right wing politician you could always start your own thread.
Ana, I thought you liked tabloid headlines.
I wouldn't dream of joining in this political conversation as my views are not conducive with the general trend on here, but I am curious about one thing, why is it ok, to reveal one's political beliefs on the left wing of politics with pride, which is fine, but to admit to supporting a candidate on the equivalent right with the same pride (well, you just wouldn't do it would you?!)would be considered by some as on a par with a criminal offense?!! I just wondered!!
Exactly, FarNorth. Really, the pronouncements made by some posters would be more suited to a tabloid headline!
Sorry, what I meant was that he's given up trying to pretend that he can get changes made before the referendum.
Once that's been held, it will not matter anyway.
Reading the article, it doesn't sound all that much as though he has given up, only that he has accepted there will be no changes "ahead of a referendum".
However,
"Mr Cameron has instead argued for "irreversible" and "legally binding" guarantees that EU law will be changed at some point in the future".
I guess he's heard about broken promises after a recent referendum.
