The main problems of England as I see things.

We have had the same low waged, low income tax, short term, free market system since Thatcher, that's over 30 years. Even Tony Blair's New Labour Government continued what Thatcher started, despite all his anti-Tory rhetoric at each Labour party conference prior to 1997, and receiving a mammoth mandate for change in 1997, Blair threw it all away. What i'm saying is that young people have never known any different system. And the other thing is that a huge percentage of English adults also dont know any different, because we English are simply neither motivated by, or interest in politics. We also have a largely right wing Tory supporting press, and a BBC that indeed supporters the Tory's, plus a right wing pundit named Andrew Neil. The Tory's have truly got it made. They will be in power for ever........

How stupid do you have to be Parliament100? Anyone with an ounce of intelligence would have realised the SNP could have put up a chimpanzee as a candidate and they would have got elected.

You need to provide hard, checkable evidence Parliament100. You cannot simply make statements and expect us to accept them as fact.

Totally agree that parliament is way out of touch and has no real facts, but have to assure you absent that my vote most certainly would not have gone to any chimpanzee !

Mine would, if it could make a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Durhamjen but quite a few are, me and thee included. And boy! are we vociferous. grin

Ana Sat 11-Jul-15 19:24:39

Well one of you certainly is, but to be quite honest, Lilygran, your political persuasion has never been obvious to me. Seriously.

Good thing I am not English then. But as an English speaker I would appreciate Tories rather than Tory's hmm

annodomini Sat 11-Jul-15 19:43:19

Funny, isn't it that those on the left perceive the BBC to be biased towards the right while those on the right perceive quite the reverse. Good old Auntie must be getting something right!

Lilygran Sat 11-Jul-15 20:17:51

Don't have to argue along party lines to be very interested in politics!

durhamjen Mon 13-Jul-15 18:19:19

Agreed, Lilygran.
Politics is about people.

This is an interesting debate, but we really should not attack each other. I am of a similar frame of mind to Parliament and vampirequeen, regardless of the odd typo, grammar mistake, or statistical misunderstanding in the thread.

We do remember better times, and the fact that the Thatcher woman was widely hated for her social destruction says it all. We left the UK with our new baby after her election in 1979, but I have kept in touch all the time. I like to think I can be fairly objective from this distance (Australia)

I also believe that the low tax, low wage, and open slather for big business has harmed society. Homeless people, beggars on the street, all hugely increased since Thatcher.

They are rarer here because it is a country rich in resources, but we too are fighting destructive Tory policies, and our Labour party in opposition is about as left wing as my cat. I am constantly ashamed of our government: the latest in their demonising of refugees, for instance, is to load the refugee review board with their own people, and remove the hugely experienced people currently in charge. But that is only one thing - they are destructive on education, climate change, health: the usual stuff.

I often worry about the fact our young people have seen nothing else.

What is needed is for the parties of the left to find a way, a modern way, to capture the imagination of people of all ages and lifestyles. Because I believe that many people, other than the true believers like me, or the very politically savvy in general, vote on feelings not facts.

durhamjen Mon 13-Jul-15 23:37:57

Do you need to bring your cat up better?

Joan Mon 13-Jul-15 23:45:23

Ha ha. Absolutely - he is a loud-mothed selfish little creature, who costs us a fortune. But we love him.
