Concern within the Labour Party that Jeremy Corbyn is doing well

A Labour pressure group has asked party members to vote against Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership contest.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33490959

Tristram Hunt was also saying, on Marr this morning, that Labour needs an English Labour party as they now have Welsh Labour and Scottish Labour.

This has left me cogitating about where the Labour Party will go.

I think there is a great deal of evidence that a left wing party would attract support. So if Corbyn doesn't get in I can see there being a split with a left wing party (calling itself Labour or something else) emerging. It would be nice to see some more politicians like Corbyn entering the field. He always looks very relaxed and good humoured. Maybe because he answers questions openly and honestly without wondering if his image is going to suffer.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 13:08:32

Like Left Unity, Trisher?
They are already complaining that Left Unity members are infiltrating the Labour Party. Most of them left the Labour Party after years of being members because there was nobody representing their views, so they are just returning.
Did you see Corbyn telling the reporter not to get too excited and asking him who was feeding him these words? That was about clause lV.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 13:52:32

This is why we need Jeremy Corbyn, someone who cares for worker's rights.

Yes I do think a split is possible. There seems to be such a wide gap between the two wings. Although saying that the Tories seem to hang together somehow.

I am worried about the Michael Foot effect though. But saying that it is very different to then, aswe have social media, which hopefully is able to squash the more outrageous rhetoric from the rightwing press, although I an not holding my breath.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 14:05:52

Never heard of Left Unity. Just googled them. What do left wing Labour voters think of them?

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 14:08:18

Corbyn has tried himself to suppress the idea that he wants to bring back clause lV, but they are still trying to hang him with it.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 14:10:05

I have mentioned before[not on this thread I dont think] that the Labour party are in danger[depending on your point of view] of splitting into two seperate parties.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 14:15:55

Not a historian, then, soon?

POGS Mon 10-Aug-15 15:31:54

soon

Why do you not believe there are parties that could amalgamate to challenge Labour if Corbyn doesn't win?

If Corbyn doesn't get elected as Labour Leader then those who see him as the right man for the job have decisions to make as to where Labour will be heading for them to continue being Labour supporters. After all they are mostly saying that Labour does not hold any conviction for them any longer, hasn't done so for a while, or so it would seem.

Corbyn has been a left of center MP all his life. His profile and values have been so prominent since the Leadership contest he will find it difficult to return to being a back bench MP probably. Why? Because whilst he has been a known name to those in the media and public who enjoy 'Westminster Bubble' watching , or watching him on Russia Today News, listening to him at meetings etc. Corbyn has been an unknown name for most of the electorate and they only have a limited knowledge of him but they like what they see and hear.

The fact is he is preaching to the converted to those who belong to or agree with parties such as Left Unity, The Peoples Assemble Against Austerity, Communist Party etc. If he fails to obtain the leadership why wouldn't they try to get Corbyn to be a 'front man' for a new left wing party where they all share a common agreement with each other. His profile now makes him an obvious choice and his age might just make him think it's now or never if he fails to get the backing for Labour Leader.

petra Mon 10-Aug-15 15:35:56

That will take a while to digest.

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 15:51:41

I dont know why you think I dont think that parties could amalgamate to challenge Labour.
I dont get your question really.

janeainsworth Mon 10-Aug-15 16:08:33

POGS I think soon meant she did think Labour might split.
The 'I don't think' referred to where she had previously posted the idea.
confused

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 16:13:27

yes janeainsworth

POGS Mon 10-Aug-15 16:31:45

soontobe

I apologise to you, I did read your post as 'not' believing Labour would/could divide into 2 parties.

Anniebach Mon 10-Aug-15 16:34:50

No pretence with Corbyn , just received e mail to say he will be in S Wales 12th August and he has chosen to speak at the Ni Bevan stones, wow what a tribute

soontobe Mon 10-Aug-15 16:38:04

No problem POGS

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 16:38:17

Last date for signing up to vote for him - before midday.

TriciaF Mon 10-Aug-15 17:23:22

Oh dear! I've just got round to re-joining! Maybe too late to vote.
Anyway, my subscription will support them.
I remember in the days I was an active member the LP was always short of funds, apart from the support of the Unions. Whereas the Tories always seemed to have plenty.

durhamjen Mon 10-Aug-15 17:32:48

No, not too late,Tricia. The papers do not go out until the weekend.
I meant the last date was the one that Anniebach mentioned, 12th August, when Corbyn is going to a rally in South Wales. He's probably going to more than one - he went to three in Yorkshire on the same day.
(I know that date because it's my wedding anniversary.)

TriciaF Tue 11-Aug-15 13:57:14

Thanks Jen - perhaps there will be something about voting in the membership pack they say that they're sending.

Gracesgran Wed 12-Aug-15 10:38:53

Interesting comment on one of the news programmes. Apparently amongst those who have said they will vote for Andy Burnham 1 in 10 do not think he could be PM. Amongst those who have said they will vote for Jeremy Corbyn 1 in 5 do not think he could be PM. Apparently this is a flag as to who will change their mind when they actually vote. That means twice as many could change their mind about JC when it comes to the actually vote so it is by no means a done deal.

durhamjen Wed 12-Aug-15 10:44:46

Ken Loach supports Corbyn because of his housing policy.
Ken Loach set up Left Unity.

POGS Wed 12-Aug-15 11:38:55

Labour must think highly of Ken Loach.

Hasn't Labour stopped over 1.000 people from voting in the Leadership contest?

Ken Loach was I believe one of them, or am I mistaken?

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 11:43:30

Quite a few Green Party members have been weeded out too, I understand!

rosesarered Wed 12-Aug-15 11:52:02

Yes, heard on the radio that quite a few are being weeded out one way or another.Ken Loach has always had socialist views and made them known, no doubt he is a thorn in Labour's side at the moment.
