Concern within the Labour Party that Jeremy Corbyn is doing well

A Labour pressure group has asked party members to vote against Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership contest.

Tristram Hunt was also saying, on Marr this morning, that Labour needs an English Labour party as they now have Welsh Labour and Scottish Labour.

This has left me cogitating about where the Labour Party will go.

It would take someone like Hugh Grant to stand as leader for me to re-join any political party.

rosesarered Wed 12-Aug-15 11:56:39

You mean somebody who looks like Hugh Grant?grin

gillybob Wed 12-Aug-15 12:01:12

No roses Actually HUGH GRANT !! grin

In America they seem to like film stars as politicians - Ronald Reagan was quite popular, and Clint Eastwood was mayor of a big town.
Why not here? Daniel Craig? Sean Connery?

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 12:06:48

Crikey, I think Sean's a bit past it at 84! grin

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 12:08:06

(To start again as a politician, I hasten to add...)

gillybob Wed 12-Aug-15 12:20:35

I believe he (Sean Connery) had quite a polital opinion during the recent Scottish referendum.

Although living in the Bahamas I can't see how/why he was qualified to give any opinion.

Second thoughts.... wouldn't that make him a perfect politician.

Don't do as I do, do as I say! smile

I wonder if the Labour Party stance on banning people from voting doesn't somewhere along the line prove to be illegal, at least challenged by somebody as wealthy and political as Loach.

Do you think he will just shrug his shoulders and leave it be , seems a bit of a personal slap down from the Labour Party to me, or is it a reasonable move on. Labours part?

How can you ban people? I thought the rules were you paid your dosh and were eligible to vote. Interested to understand how it works.

It seems Ken Loach wasn't willing to sign up when he saw what he was agreeing to...

POGS Wed 12-Aug-15 12:48:06

Thanks Ana

durhamjen Wed 12-Aug-15 17:57:13

Strange how you have missed the Tory MP who signed up and the Tory MEP.

They actually would have had to agree that they supported the Labour Party ideals. That's fraud.

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 18:02:58

Oh, well I do hope they'll feel the full force of the law! smile

POGS Wed 12-Aug-15 19:11:14

Was your post for my attention DJ. Am I the 'you' referred to in your post.

If so then not really DJ it was your good self who brought Ken Loach into the thread.

POGS Wed 12-Aug-15 19:24:43

DJ

I don't know or particularly care about the Tories you mention but as you have raised them in connection with fraud does that mean you consider the 1200 reported people who have been banned by Labour from voting have committed fraud?

Whether they are Green Party members' Tories, Socialist Workers Party, Lib Dems etc. etc. is it really fraudulent?

rosesarered Wed 12-Aug-15 19:33:17

It shows what a silly way they have chosen to be able to vote.

rosesarered Wed 12-Aug-15 19:34:01

Too late now though, but they will have to find another way of voting next time around.

durhamjen Wed 12-Aug-15 19:50:04

Yes, I brought up Ken Loach. He left the Labour party for the same reason I did, because it no longer represented my views.

No Tory MP or MEP can say that it represents his views. Therefore that is fraud. Their names are in the link that Ana gave.
As I say, strange you mention Loach, who is a socialist, but not the Tories from the same article, who are most definitely not socialists.

You is singular and plural.

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 20:04:08

Not strange at all, as it was you who brought up Ken Loach and that's who we were discussing.

I couldn't care less about the two tories - why aren't you castigating all those who belonged to a party other than Labour already but tried to vote in the Labour leadership election? Surely that's a form of fraud as well.

durhamjen Wed 12-Aug-15 20:14:23

"However, a YouGov poll out this week showed that Corbyn was well ahead of his rivals, even with long-standing Labour members, suggesting that any entryism will not change the final result."

According to the Yougov poll it will not make any difference.
A labour MP has said he was a member of the Green party as well. But he stood for the Labour party because he thinks it better to green from the inside. That was known when he stood as MP, and he was still elected.

You must realise that it's just not possible to say that you agree with Labour party policies when you are a Tory MP. If that's not wrong, then something is badly wrong with the Labour Party anyway. All Corbyn is trying to do is bring it back to the left.

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 20:17:50

You must realise that it's wrong to join the Labour party when you're actually a member of another party (Green, LibDem, Conservative or whatever) just to vote in the leadership election, surely?

Or is it only the two tories who are to be condemned for dishonesty?

hmm

apricot Wed 12-Aug-15 20:24:45

On Saturday I sent a text to register as a Labour party member (cost £3)
I got a text reply saying I would be contacted. Okay, I knew applicants were being vetted and there had been a huge number of applications so I waited. I was still waiting when the deadline to register to vote in the leadership election passed today.
I've lost my chance to vote for Corbyn and feel a bit miffed.

durhamjen Wed 12-Aug-15 20:32:38

Three Tories that we know of, because Toby Young did as well. It will be interesting to see the figures. They must know why they ruled certain people out.

Do not worry, apricot. As I wrote above, the Yougov poll says he will get through even without all the new members.
However, it looks as though he will be in for a fight to stay leader, so you could still register and be useful to him as a real socialist.

POGS Wed 12-Aug-15 20:45:38

Then it's a technicality , maybe underhand or taking advantage of a situation , it is not fraud.

Ana Wed 12-Aug-15 20:50:22

I do hope you weren't one of the Green Party members who were weeded out, durhamjen...shock

TriciaF Wed 12-Aug-15 21:38:21

I wonder how they check out applicants? I wrote the name of the constituency party I used to belong to, I certainly have never joined another party.
Also my name changed at one time (re-married) so they might have the wrong name.
They haven't taken my money yet.
