Concern within the Labour Party that Jeremy Corbyn is doing well

A Labour pressure group has asked party members to vote against Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership contest.

Tristram Hunt was also saying, on Marr this morning, that Labour needs an English Labour party as they now have Welsh Labour and Scottish Labour.

This has left me cogitating about where the Labour Party will go.

POGS What commentator would you consider to be unbiased? I don't think that the views of a respected commentator like Richard Murphy should be dismissed as being biased when it seems to me that other commentators with different views might also be considered by some to be biased.

I think one of the ways of disputing an argument that is being put forward is to identify incorrect information within it or to demonstrate that such information is not balanced because it presents only a partial picture and has omitted facts that do not support the argument. Just saying that someone has left or right leaning connections or supporters and therefore their views are tainted seems to me a bit of a sloppy way of dismissing an argument.

whitewave I think it was seeing the procession of lacklustre Labour politicians on Question Time, who appeared not to have an original thought in their heads but just trotted out the party line, which made me despair. (That goes for the Lib Dems and the Conservatives as well but I didn't really expect better of them). It's so refreshing to see Corbyn actually answering a question in a straightforward way without playing for time or using every trick in the book to avoid it.

anniebach I sincerely hope that if JC is elected he will not have Tristram Hunt or Chukka Umuna in his shadow cabinet. They are, in my view, career politicians who try to be all things to all people, wriggling and squirming in interviews in their efforts to avoid giving a straight answer.

Liz now has David Miliband's backing. I wonder if that will get her any more votes.

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 23:37:14

Can't see Caroline Flint walking away either .

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 23:36:26

Angela Eagle, she has said she will work with who is elected

Quite are few of the younger ones think they are walking in the footsteps of Blair ,

POGS Tue 18-Aug-15 23:30:34

Shadow cabinet.

Dianne Abbott
Paul Flynn
Dennis Skinner
Michael Meacher (noticed no response to my post on Meacher 15th)
Tom Watson
Hilary Benn
John McDonnell
Geoffrey Robinson

Can't think of anybody under the age of 50 but the new intake are as yet unknown.

I guess a few from the Labour/Co-Op grouping.

Any more guesses.

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 23:00:44

Thanks Jen, no surprise Evette drew a much smaller number then . I have mixed feelings towards Liz, she has no chance so as she is so loyal to the party and is on the right why doesn't she stand down to increase the votes of the two in the centre , not that I want her to but the party doesn't come first for her does it ? I will be quite relieved when 12th September arrives, emails, snail mail, text and phone calls , I did get irritated with a chap who was telephone canvassing for Liz, doubt he was born when we had the miners strike

durhamjen Tue 18-Aug-15 22:54:02

It was actually 1100 tickets sold for the Tyneside Theatre, but he had to have another rally outside, for those who just turned up.
Hope he doesn't lose his voice.

I keep getting this image of Southport beach (or any beach) lots of grannies bums up in the air (fully clothed of course) and their heads nowhere to be seen.

(Hides behind a dune.)

durhamjen Tue 18-Aug-15 22:40:03

It was in the North East, in Labour areas. Do not have the exact place for Cooper, but Corbyn was speaking in Newcastle.

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 22:37:37

I think that is what Ed is doing Ana

Jen, much depends on where they were speaking to realy compare

durhamjen Tue 18-Aug-15 22:03:41

Corbyn spoke to a room of 800; Cooper to 60, so it said on the local news today.

Ana Tue 18-Aug-15 21:50:00

grin

Ana Tue 18-Aug-15 20:56:19

Couldn't Ed take over the home and childminding duties? confused
How backward some of these media types are!

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 20:53:43

The media are building it up, it is August so they have little to report. I am so annoyed at the 'Ed Balls' is advising Yvette, she was in the house eight years before her husband . 2015 and it's still the little woman syndrome . When she was first interviewed after the leadership battle opened she was asked how she would manage with the children, a husband and a home should she win, the two men were not asked , naturally

rosesarered Tue 18-Aug-15 20:25:55

Indeed, nil desperandum, although I think that Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper are starting to.

Gracesgran Tue 18-Aug-15 19:00:39

The Electoral Reform Services are sending out ballots over the next couple of weeks Tricia so do not despair smile

TriciaF Tue 18-Aug-15 18:29:26

Yes I applied nearly 2 weeks ago, but heard nothing after the initial acknowledgement of the applicaion.

whitewave Tue 18-Aug-15 18:17:21

Did you apply tricia? Only newer members are being emailed so I see no reason why you shouldn't have a vote. Exciting isn't it?

TriciaF Tue 18-Aug-15 17:55:04

I do hope that he's elected. I've given up on being able to vote now, it's probably because we live in France though we did have a vote in the general election.

janeainsworth Tue 18-Aug-15 15:17:27

Bags the sound that characterised the Furness accent for me was 'or' being pronounced 'ar'.
When we first went there I heard a small child talking about the big harses in the field. It took a few moments for me to clue on that she was referring to the horses.
smile

whitewave Tue 18-Aug-15 14:55:23

Michael Meacher

Anniebach Tue 18-Aug-15 14:42:22

Be interesting to see who will be in the shadow cabinet , think we can say by by to Tristram Hunt education, Chuka business , Chris Leslie shadow chancellor , not the party though. Diane Abbot will be in, I would be very surprised if Hilary Benn left the cabinet .

whitewave Tue 18-Aug-15 13:50:59

Will be interesting times over the coming mo nths if JC wins.

Will anyone leave the LP?
How will the press respond?
How will he perform at QT? Not that that is terribly important.
How will the country respond will it encourage more people to join the LP?
Must start a new thread if he does to outli e and discuss his proposed policies.
I am beginning to feel quite cheerful!

durhamjen Tue 18-Aug-15 12:53:35

Thanks, Grannyknot. I just wondered. Some people our age are new to UK politics because they've never bothered to vote. Not just our age, either.
