Labour Leadership watch

I thought, as the message says "start a new thread" that I should.

A quote from an article by Jeremy Corby to start this thread off.

"Ours is a democratic socialist party. Nearly 300,000 people now have that on the back of their Labour Party membership card. Our members and supporters have ideas, experience and knowledge that are a valuable resource - and none more so than our local councillors; often, the most innovative ideas are delivered in local government. Shadow minister and policy advisers do not have a monopoly on wisdom, so the must interact with party members and supporters. By making policy together, we make better policy"

and a little further on ...

"I stood in this campaign to open up a debate, to engage new people and to rebuild our party as the movement it needs to be. That is not just an approach for the leadership election but one to win in 2020."

We have become so obsessed with what politicians look like [even what their WIVES look like] other than how intelligent/honest they are sad.

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 15:04:58

How can you when faced with these facts simply ignore the Tory implication in every one since the 70 s?

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 15:03:50

What I can't understand is why, all things considered, I've faithfully voted Labour all these years confused

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 15:02:48

If you consider all the recessions since the 70 s the only ones caused by internal factors were those when the Tories were in office. Including the most recent.
You would be hard pushed to blame the Labour Government for the sub prime debacle

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 15:02:35

So was James Callaghan, which was why Labour was almost unelectable for 18+ years after his term in office. Although, to be fair, I think the Trades Unions didn't do him any favours.

rosesarered Thu 27-Aug-15 14:55:57

Gordon Brown was a hopeless PM.

rosesarered Thu 27-Aug-15 14:53:31

Of course, we all think Labour did wonderfully well, which is why as a country we didn't trust them with the economy at the last two general elections!

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 14:42:00

OK let's look at recessions since Callaghan
Mid 70's recession caused primarily by the oil crises, poor British productivity and high wagw demand because of inflationary pressure due to the oil crises. Heath and Callaghan involved.
Recession in mid 80 s
Who was the PM oh let me see - blimey it was Thatcher -
Caused by her pursuit of monetarism, which she eventually dropped, but not before she has caused countless businesses go bust and unemp!oyment rise to 11.9%.
Recession in mid 90 s caused by the Lawson boom and the ERM debacle - reme!ber black Wednesday
PM - Major
I can see a pattern emerging here
Recession in 2008 caused by sub prime mortgage debacle, crises in UK banks and credit crunch.
2010 plans put in place by the Labour government began to see growth in the economy only to be utterly squashed by the Tory government. This is still very fragilea full 6 years after they took office.

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 14:40:56

Those 'snowy winters' - were they also sometimes called the 'winters of discontent'?

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 14:39:48

I'm thinking possibly climate change?

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 14:38:49

As my youngest GS asked just this morning 'what extincted them?'.

rosesarered Thu 27-Aug-15 14:26:54

Absolutely right Anya.

rosesarered Thu 27-Aug-15 14:25:54

For all those on this thread that don't 'get' the coat joke......well, you either have a good, surreal sense of humour or you don't. Simples.
Michael Foot favoured the duffel coat around that time, but a posh version of the donkey jacket sometimes, as Tegan says.perhaps he thought it put him in touch with the working man, or maybe he just found them cosy, but either way, although he seemed a nice person, he did look scruffy for an MP, particularly back then.
What do you get if you cross a pea jacket, with a donkey jacket ( and an amorous duffel coat gets in on the act)? A peaduffledon of course!
They are extinct now, but used to roam this country in vast herds, particularly in snowy Winters.

Anya Thu 27-Aug-15 14:16:00

I don't think Cameron is anything like that Thatcher woman.

The only thing they have in common is trying to put the country back on a sound economic footing after recessions, the first during the Callaghan years and the second following Brown's reign.

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 14:07:02

She was busy elswhere wink

Tegan Thu 27-Aug-15 13:56:29

It was probably one of those pea jackets that are, in fact quite posh albeit donkey jacket looking. Gosh I've just remembered that I have a letter signed by him when I wrote about a rally in Hyde Park [must dig it out]. He was such a 'decent' man, at a time when a lot of politicians were decent; Phillip Whitehead being another example [he used to call himself my agony aunt because I always used to write to him when I was worried about something; not wanting to write to my own MP who was Edwina Currie sad.

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 13:53:44

Still can't understand what is important about a deceased man's coat? Weirdconfused

Anniebach Thu 27-Aug-15 13:49:17

Cameron is certaintly a Thatcher disciple

Ana Thu 27-Aug-15 13:48:53

Or you could just tell us, Anniebach, as you seem to know with certainty what it was not...

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 13:46:18

grin

Anniebach Thu 27-Aug-15 13:45:31

rosequartz, as you are so desperate to find out what coat Michael Foot wore then perhaps you could visit a medium and see if you can contact Jill

whitewave Thu 27-Aug-15 13:15:03

confused I am sorry how do you get from Nazis to someones coat?

rosequartz Thu 27-Aug-15 12:58:25

^Gracesgran, When Thatcher took over the Conservative party, she moved the old style social conscience caring Conservative party to a right wing Fascist Tory party, so in truth Cameron isnt a Conservative, he is a right wing Fascist Tory. And this is what's been running this country for over 30 years.
This is why Im rooting for Jeremy Corbyn^

Are you saying, Questiontime, that anyone who voted for New Labour was voting for fascism? shock Nazi boots on the ground and all that, people sent to concentration camps?

I will have to find my previous post and re-post it as this thread has gone on for so long and I still have had no answers.

Including what type of coat Michael Foot's wife Jill bought for him.

durhamjen Thu 27-Aug-15 11:02:54

This is the Guardian article by Corbyn.
