White Poppy

Here is an extract from an article on reasons for wearing a white poppy :

"Many of us instead wear a white poppy, the symbol of peace. We do so not because we feel the suffering of those who died or were bereaved any less, everyone agrees that we should commemorate the sacrifice.

But we fear that in remembering the First World War, too many people in government and the military are using the compassion that people feel to justify present and future wars."

Had you noticed, Ana?

Ana Sun 04-Oct-15 22:29:25

Isn't it obvious that's what the white poppy stands for?

What is the point in banging on about what's in the middle - does it have to be spelled out for people or something?

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 22:25:55

No, bags, my obviously post was not just addressed to you. However, you did rather make a meal of your responses to my statement.

Did you notice that the white poppy said peace in the middle?
That is all I am asking. Not difficult; yes or no will suffice.

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 22:22:38

The white poppy is for peace, Lilygran. How is that gesture politics? Do we not all want peace?

We could do with a few more politicians wanting peace.

Lilygran Sun 04-Oct-15 22:17:23

No, I wouldn't buy or wear a white poppy. The sale of poppies goes towards supporting ex-service people and the display of poppies reminds us of their sacrifices and of the pity and horror of war. The white poppy is gesture politics.

Sorry, roses. Consider poppies now at rest as far as I'm concerned. And goodnight all moon

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 22:12:20

Why are you interrogating me, dj? Your "obviously" post wasn't addressed only to (or at) only me, was it?

rosesarered Sun 04-Oct-15 22:09:25

The world would be a lot happier if nuns and monks and the whole malarkey had never existed. The bit of good work done by some of them is wiped out by the immense amount of bad.
Shall we give white poppies and what they say in the middle a rest?

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 21:55:07

So had you noticed, bags, that the white poppy said peace in the middle?

Anniebach Sun 04-Oct-15 21:44:04

Many catholic nuns and Christian brothers did bring a lot of peace and goodness . Just as there are good and bad in all faiths and all walks of life . Are all mothers bad because some mothers have abused and or murdered their children ?

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 21:35:49

I didn't call you stupid, dj. What I called stupid was the statement containing "obviously hadn't noticed...". I called that stupid because you have no way of knowing what other people notice.

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 21:30:48

So had you noticed that the centre of the white poppy said peace, bags - or anyone else who criticised me for saying I'd rather have peace?
I'd rather you didn't call me stupid.
Oh, of course, you didn't, just told me to stop saying such stupid things.
Of course that was only one thing.
How about the rest of the stupid things you are referring to, in your rude way.

rosequartz Sun 04-Oct-15 19:56:20

Yes, and the Catholic nuns and Christian Brothers brought a lot of peace and goodness didn't they (another story) sad

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 19:54:08

throughout

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 19:53:49

Reminds me of something we were told as the children of Catholics, rq, which was that if enough people throught the world said enough Hail Marys then there would be peace and goodness in the world. Something like that anyway.

Never going to happen, wishful, fairy world thinking.

The intention is fine. The method... hmm If... then... Aye, right.

rosequartz Sun 04-Oct-15 19:48:56

I DO BELIEVE IN FAIRIES!

The Tooth Fairy (where else do those teeth go?)
Tinkerbell (I saw her once)
And the ones at the bottom of our garden.

I do believe in peace
I will wear a red poppy on Remembrance Day and I will pray for peace.

However, even if I pray very hard I doubt it will happen.
Look at man's history over the millennia.
So all we can do is help to pick up the pieces.

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 19:44:34

All I meant is that the centre of the white poppy says peace. But obviously you haven't noticed that. Never mind.

If that's what you meant, why didn't you say that?

Obviously nothing! You do not know what other people notice. Stop saying such stupid things.

Anniebach Sun 04-Oct-15 17:54:00

I always shout - I believe in faries in the theatre

Wearing a red or white poppy or not wearing a red or white poppy or wearing or not wearing both is the choice of the individual ,

Elegran Sun 04-Oct-15 17:53:30

You were reaping the harvest of the seeds sown earlier, dj, during the debate on white or red poppies. I am glad to hear that you had no intention of implying that anyone didn't prefer peace.

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 17:39:09

stopwar.org.uk/index.php/news/face-to-face-when-british-soldiers-met-ex-members-of-the-ira

Soldiers for peace.

durhamjen Sun 04-Oct-15 17:30:43

All I meant is that the centre of the white poppy says peace. But obviously you haven't noticed that. Never mind.

Elegran Sun 04-Oct-15 17:24:09

In fact, it is an insult to those who don't wear a white poppy, or any poppy, to assume that they don't want peace.

It is getting a bit like those facebook shares "Like this and share it if you . . . . ." implying that if you don't "like" and "share" it then you are a miserable bugger who doesn't give a shit about the thing the poster is promoting. Or shouting out at the theatre that you believe in fairies, because every time a child says they don't believe, a fairy dies.

Jane10 Sun 04-Oct-15 16:40:25

Hear hear Thatbags!

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 16:29:44

One doesn't have to wear a badge to be sincere about wanting peace, or to prove oneself about anything, actually.

thatbags Sun 04-Oct-15 16:28:52

Indeed not. And not wearing any poppy does not mean the non-wearer doesn't want peace either.
