I find this very worrying. This government seems to be trying all ways to stop dissent.

What do others think about this?

janeainsworth Mon 19-Oct-15 11:45:47

pen could it be that the authorities know more about who is funding this young man than we do?
I'm all for the right to peaceful protest in one's own country, but have less sympathy for professional protestors from elsewhere.
What do you think might happen to foreign protestors in China?

"wake up one day constrained in ways we do not want" - really?! shock Ordinary citizens in a country like the UK with its strongly maintained principles and attitudes towards democracy? I doubt it.

I would be more concerned for the Woman who is likely to be deported after living in the UK for 50 years, I just read an article on this on the BBC news website.
She went to the UK with her Mother who became a British Citizen and they assumed she was one also.
I doubt if she would be able to return to her country of birth and just get on with it.
Sorry I cannot send the link, for some reason the BBC will not let me post items.
She is a care worker and I wonder if she is now coming to retirement age ??

Is it this one felice www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/gran-facing-deportation-unless-proves-6626647

felice Mon 19-Oct-15 12:09:57

Yes thats it thanks. Considering her Stepfather was serving with the British Army when she arrived in the UK the whole thing smacks of attacking the easy targets who do not have the Human rights brigade behind them.

Grannyknot Mon 19-Oct-15 12:25:09

felice I think it is more a case of an individual in the Home Office latching on to a case and throwing the book at it than a generalised attacking of easy targets. I am pretty sure that this woman, with the help of her attorney, will be able to resolve this situation and do the necessary paperwork and she will stay.

This story smacks to me of "thereby hangs a tale". How come her employer didn't ask for proof of eligibility to work in the UK? That would have revealed the problem far sooner.

I have no particular sympathy with this Hungarian chap - if he wants to take direct action his skills are needed in his own country right now.

However, I do think DJ and Penst are right to remind us that we should be mindful of the principles involved.

We are a liberal democracy but that has to be guarded - remember Blair and Blunkett doing their best to impose ID cards? The majority of citizens were against it and they backed down.

felice Mon 19-Oct-15 12:44:28

As she appears to have married and had children in the UK surely the registrars at those times should have beeen the ones checking her credentials.

Nonnie Mon 19-Oct-15 12:56:11

Perhaps he brought himself to the attention of the police and as a result they looked into his background?

^ He then received a letter from the Home Office threatening to remove him from the UK as part of Operation Nexus, a joint police and Home Office operation designed to arrest and deport criminals from other parts of the EU living in the UK.^

Seems to me that he might have a criminal record in Hungary.

rosequartz Mon 19-Oct-15 13:20:01

felice and janea
thanks for the link - not in the Guardian then - I can only find reports in the Mirror and the DM, strange?

Now this does concern me; I do hope she gets this resolved and can stay. Common sense should prevail.

durhamjen Mon 19-Oct-15 23:59:39

Thank you, penstemmon and riverwalk. At last somebody has seen the bigger picture.
Some of you seem to be finding this man guilty without knowing the facts. Trial by gransnet.
So where would you like this to stop? Who else should we send away?

I have just read about asylum seekers being made homeless after four weeks. Should they be sent back? Of course they should, they are foreign and homeless.

Some of you seem to be finding this man guilty without knowing the facts. You are declaring this to be a miscarriage of justice for similar reasons dj.

Iam64 Tue 20-Oct-15 07:36:43

I agree with durhamjen about the craziness that ensures successful asylum seekers lose their rented accommodation within 4 weeks of being given asylum status. It'a bonkers, a young Sudanese man interviewed is now a rough sleeper so of course he can't get work. That's the kind of bureaucracy that needs attention. Alea's link above, about the need for EU nationals to be studying/working etc in order to remain in the UK is what's important in respect of the Hungarian man.

'Trial by Gransnet'?
What an emotive expression.

Quite right too

Nonnie Tue 20-Oct-15 11:40:20

Alea Tue 20-Oct-15 11:52:00

That was ironic, right? grin

Nonnie Tue 20-Oct-15 12:02:12

Alea are you being confrontational? How dare you not agree with me? grin

Alea Tue 20-Oct-15 12:23:53

And how dare you not disagree with me!
Don't misunderestimate me grin

Nonnie Tue 20-Oct-15 13:24:03

Well I'm not going to admit I am wrong or apologise, who do you think I am? I am never wrong. grin

Love that word - misunderestimate!
