Should we bomb De-ash/ISIS in Syria?

Blair took us into the Iraq war (to keep his American allies happy) and the Middle East was de-stabilised.
Its even more unstable and Cameron seems keen to send bombers there, presumably to keep his EU allies happy (given his negotiations...).
ISIS/DEA-SH thrive on chaos. They are a death cult aimed at hastening the end of the world. (Day of Judgement, Islam style).
Given the chaos in Syria and Iraq with all the different factions on the ground and Russia joining the throng in the air I cannot see why joining in would be either helpful or wise.
The poor civilians on the ground are now in fear of Assad, De-ash/ISIS and the bombs.
Cameron's arguments are thin.
Here are some more arguments on the other side voxpoliticalonline.com/2015/11/27/how-many-innocents-will-die-because-of-right-wing-labours-petulance/
Your MP will be heading back to their constituency to think about this over the weekend.
If you are against the bombing please, please write to your MP.
You can use this very easy site. You just type in your postcode and the site will ensure that your MP gets your email. They will be getting lots of emails on the subject so there is no need to be long-winded, so it's a 5 minute task. www.writetothem.com

This is clever of the RAF. They have completely obliterated the same oilfield twice.

I'm sure on a R5 interview yesterday they said Da-esh was an acronym for bigots in Arabic.

Ana You said:

"at least Benn's change of mind shows he isn't stuck in some time-warp of Labour ideology and can actually think for himself."

Two weeks previously he'd said, re whether we should join the bombing:

"No. They have to come up with an overall plan, which they have not done. I think the focus for now is finding a peaceful solution to the civil war."

Well, there was still no coherent overall plan and several military bodies/ individuals and middle east experts supported the view that there wasn't, so it can't be argued that something had come to light that had changed his mind. I stand by my view that he used the opportunity to grandstand on an issue where it was already known that the "no" vote could not win.

I am not a Labour supporter but I have to say that I thought Hilary Benn summed everything up very well.

Mine does, roseq. It's a Vax.

Off to vac the floors. More illuminating. I used to have one of those hoovers years ago with a light on the front. That was very illuminating and very useful indeed. Why don't they make them like that any more I wonder.
Don't keep your neighbours awake! moon

Red herring. Back to thread.

Ana Thu 03-Dec-15 22:29:27

Whatever...how silly you are sometimes, durhamjen!

durhamjen Thu 03-Dec-15 22:26:56

So it wasn't a quite straightforward post, and therefore it cannot be a ridiculous interpretation.

Off to vac the floors. More illuminating.

Ana Thu 03-Dec-15 22:24:52

Perhaps I should! grin

durhamjen Thu 03-Dec-15 22:22:53

I wasn't the only one who thought you meant that, Ana. Perhaps you should try and be more explicit.

Ana Thu 03-Dec-15 22:12:22

What makes you think that only people who change their mind think for themselves?

Did I say that, durhamjen? No, of course I didn't. Yet another of your ridiculous interpretations of a quite straightforward post.

This is the country that we sell arms to. It's the only other country in the world that has bought our Brimstone missiles.
A man on the radio this morning talking about his family in Damascus said that if you look in the schools in Daesh ruled areas the books are from Saudi. It is Saudi which is bankrolling Daesh.

So, because he voted the way that some people don't like, he is now being touted as opportunistic? That takes the biscuit, even for the political threads on this forum.

Eloethan Thu 03-Dec-15 21:55:26

Does it really show he can think for himself - to change his mind so drastically within two weeks? Or does it show him to be an opportunist who knew which way the wind was blowing and decided to blow along with it?

durhamjen Thu 03-Dec-15 21:51:58

What makes you think that only people who change their mind think for themselves?
Does that mean that you never think for yourself, because I cannot recall you ever saying you've changed your mind about anything.

Ana Thu 03-Dec-15 21:39:03

That's dashed his chances of replacing Corbyn.

What makes you think he had such hopes, durhamjen?

And as someone on another thread has said, at least Benn's change of mind shows he isn't stuck in some time-warp of Labour ideology and can actually think for himself.

rosesarered Thu 03-Dec-15 21:28:54

Daesh is an insult to them ( good!) as it is close to the Arabic for ' trampled underfoot' ie. Rubbish. So let everyone call them that.

durhamjen Thu 03-Dec-15 21:22:58

"An interview published on 15 November in which Hilary Benn said he did not advocate bombing Isis in Syria has been shared widely on social media in the aftermath yesterday’s Syria debate in Parliament.

The interview saw renewed interest after the shadow foreign secretary … advocated the bombing of Syria.

In the previous interview, given to the Independent on Sunday… Mr Benn was asked whether the Government should bring forward a vote on bombing Isis in Syria, which was at that time not planned. He replied:

“No. They have to come up with an overall plan, which they have not done. I think the focus for now is finding a peaceful solution to the civil war.

The comments contrast with the view stated by Mr Benn in his speech two weeks later. In that speech he urged Labour MPs to vote for bombing."

That's dashed his chances of replacing Corbyn.

Anniebach, it isn't only David Cameron who says Isil should be called Daesh, it's been pushed by every side involved, except Daesh, for weeks now. I found a post on my Facebook page last week that said Is had threatened to cut out the tongue of anyone who called them Daesh because it's an insult. I don't know if the post was true of course!

The charity I support is LILY, a small one which takes no money for itself.

The charity is asking this time for money for shoes for Syrian refugee children (£5 for a pair of shoes for a child who would otherwise be walking around in the cold Turkish winter barefoot). Also money is needed for essential goods. There was a thread about VAT on sanitary products for women and girls - imagine not having any at all.

rosequartz Thu 03-Dec-15 18:03:19

Here's the figure from the BBC then, rather than from the charity I posted from:

More than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in four-and-a-half years of armed conflict, which began with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war. More than 11 million others have been forced from their homes as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and those opposed to his rule battle each other - as well as jihadist militants from Islamic State

Probably worse than those two sets of figures I posted as the reports are dated two months ago.

Anniebach Thu 03-Dec-15 18:00:20

whitewave, horrific to read those numbers , one is one too many, I feel such despair , what are we doing to each other

rosequartz Thu 03-Dec-15 18:00:12

France, as the biggest manufacturer and exporter of arms to the near and middle east, must be clapping their hands
That's a rather cruel thing to say under the circumstances.
