Pleased to see voters support Labour in Oldham. Media was predicting a disaster for JC leadership - didn't happen. In fact Labour got a bigger share of the vote.

I do think that JC has touched people with his style and sincerity I like him. I do think the compromises he is going to have to make to remain leader in the future will be too much for him sadly.

GillT57 Fri 04-Dec-15 10:30:16

Agreed tanith. I think that even those who do not agree with his political views appreciate his honesty and sincerity of his beliefs. Sadly, this may not make him a strong enough candidate for PM. AS for Leyburn take your bigotry elsewhere please.

Why don't you explain yourself leybourn?

Or maybe explain why the white British didn't get off their backsides and vote if they wanted a different outcome.

whitewave Fri 04-Dec-15 10:36:45

leyburn you will no doubt see that grans can seem likes cats in a bag at times especially when emotions are high. BUT I bet anything there isn't a single gran that would agree with your sentiment - we would close ranks against you I am afraid so forget it.

Surely in Oldham they could have dressed a pig up in Labour colours and it still would have won? as far back as I can remember it was strongly Labour, and can't see why it would change, or that anyone thought it would.

Michael Meacher had been their labour MP from 1970 until his death in 2015 there were boundary changes in I think the nineties but he still held the seat.

How disappointing for the media who have been predicting a possibly win for UKIP because Corbyn was party leader, a blow for the blairites too

Riverwalk Fri 04-Dec-15 11:24:30

Nige is crying foul!

whitewave Fri 04-Dec-15 11:24:42

annie be interesting to see how the right wing explain it.

Tegan Fri 04-Dec-15 11:27:02

Had a late nigh babysit last night so stayed up to watch this. The man who has been elected came across as a totally decent person who really wants to make a difference to the local community and, as a local person really cares about the place. The sort of person we need in Parliament these days. His emotional speech actually made my cry; so heartfelt and genuine.I'll watch his career with interest. Pity about the unpleasant accusations of postal vote rigging made by UKIP.

whitewave Fri 04-Dec-15 11:35:54

Poor old Nige always the bridesmaid never -well once - the bride!

Anniebach Fri 04-Dec-15 11:56:28

whitewave , I think there will be a deafening silence from the blairites . Did you hear about the leaked email regarding the bullying in the Tory party ? Seems a month before the poor young man took his life the bully had been reported , the Tory party knew of accusations yet they denied they had any complaints .

I don't think Oldham West and Royton will ever shift from being a Labour stronghold.

Jim Mc Mahon seemed to be a well liked candidate and a good choice and he achieved a good majority to boot.

Tegan Fri 04-Dec-15 12:38:08

I still feel sorry for the Lib Dems who don't deserve to be vilified in the way that they have been. Their candidate seemed like a decent sort.

POGS Fri 04-Dec-15 12:41:08

Really? I didn't know that. What happened ?

Tegan Fri 04-Dec-15 13:00:34

Just in general POGS, not specifically at Oldham sad.

Pogs said "I don't think Oldham West and Royton will ever shift from being a Labour stronghold."

Well that's what people were saying about ALL the Scottish seats a year ago and look what happened at the GE! Only 1 Labour MP left in the whole of Scotland - though I'm pleased to see that he voted AGAINST the air strikes. It will be interesting to see if the 'Corbyn Effect' sees an increase in Labour support in the May 2016 Scottish Parliament elections, tho' ATM it looks as if any good Corbyn has done is negated by the antics of Kezia Dugdale.

rosesarered Fri 04-Dec-15 13:54:58

Scotland is another matter entirely.

Jayh Fri 04-Dec-15 15:38:56

Like Tegan , I am a bit upset about the demise of the Lib Dems. They don't deserve it. I was really surprised to see them reduced to one MP In Scotland in the GE and I hope that they can make a bit of a comeback in next year's SP elections.
I am bemused at UKIP crying foul over postal votes. If they think there has been jiggery-pokery then they can get their own followers to sign up for postal votes at the next opportunity and redress the balance.

Eloethan Fri 04-Dec-15 17:23:38

A bit of good news for a change.

Anniebach Fri 04-Dec-15 17:49:49

Nige spent much time telling the media there had been foul play in the postal votes he followed it with - and when / if I get proof I will go to the police
