I am so in agreement with you GA I was also waiting for my bot to be deployed there at that time he had already done two tours of Irag at that time and spent his 21st birthday there his brother also served at different times both of these boys lost friends and I am eternally grateful that they came home, how I would hate for them to have to return, everything they & their friends have gone through would seem such a waste.flowers

Oh ga I am so terribly sad for you, for your daughter and her child, for your SiL's family and friends. What a complete and utter pointless waste of all those young lives. Nothing was achieved. And nothing, it seems, has been learned either. I so agree with you about not sending any more troops out there. We cannot keep sacrificing our young men and destroying their families. flowers

There are never any winners in a war, only the remains of sadness at lives lost in the hope of a better future. Like everyone else here ga my thoughts are with you and your family, and indeed the families of all those who are without their loved ones.

Madness indeed ga - how sad (and rightly angry) you must be feeling - and your DD. I do not understand how they can do this without parliamentary sanction. flowers

This is overwhelmingly sad and such a waste.

But I agree with you GA about not sending more troops in.

This must be so awful for you and for your DD, GA. A couple of people who had lost loved ones in Afghanistan were interviewed on Jeremy Vine at lunch time giving their point of view. So sad. sad

What a waste of your poor son-in-law's life, granny activist. You and your daughter must feel the double sadness of the time of year without him, and the fact that the Taliban are back in the region.
And how many of our young men and women are our government prepared to sacrifice for a war that we seemingly cannot win?
Hugs and flowers

So sorry for your heartbreaking news Grannyactivist.
I agree with you 100% about the latest intervention in Afghanistan - a terrible waste of human life and limb.

I write with tears of grief and frustration.

This time six years ago I spent Christmas with my very pregnant daughter and her husband. They were so excited at the prospect of their son being born and looking forward to becoming a family. It was a very happy Christmas, only slightly overshadowed by the prospect of my son in law's upcoming tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Tomorrow I shall be visiting my son in law's grave as he was one of the many young men who came home from Sangin in a coffin. Today I cannot describe how devastated I am to read of current events in Sangin, which is once again overrun by the taliban.

"The Taliban have captured the police headquarters, the governor's office as well as the intelligence agency building in Sangin," deputy Helmand governor Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar told AFP.

"Fighting is escalating in the district."

General Lord Richards of Herstmonceux, former Chief of the Defence Staff and top Nato commander in Nato commander in Afghanistan, told The Times that Britain and its allies should be prepared to increase the number of support troops in the country if needed.

NO and NO and NO and NO!!!! I hate that the good that was achieved, in a war I didn't believe in, has gone to waste; today it literally makes me weep - but it is madness to send in more troops.
