Cameron's Christmas message

Having read the headline perhaps Cameron can reflect on Christian values of faith, hope and charity and look to his conscience for guidance concerning the more unfortunate people both at home and abroad! Where is kindness, support and understanding in government policy? Is it really Christian to see people in poverty, the NHS a shambles whilst our leaders are revelling in their million £ homes and tasting all the good things life has to offer. Perhaps he thinks that charity begins in his home and doesn't extend further than his circle mates.

Anyway, my Christmas message is to help and support all those who are less well off than ourselves in whatever small way we can. Happy Christmas all and please forgive the grouch. (I'm an aetheist (spelling has deserted me on this Christmas eve) - I must be getting older!)

But being chosen as party leader by members of that party is very different from being elected as PM by the nation. We shall see.

rosesarered Wed 30-Dec-15 22:40:09

Agreed Ana it is totally different, but in it's own way just as unlikely, I mean who'd a thunk it??

rosequartz Wed 30-Dec-15 23:32:26

Difficult things like lowering the tax rate for the very richest?
I thought they just put it back to where it was under Labour except for the last few months of their reign term in office?

Is a newly converted filthy rich Roman Catholic more Christian than someone who doesn't shout about their (presumably C of E) faith?

Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God. (5:9)
Is that why TB wanted the job as Middle East Peace Envoy? Did he think it would help him on his way to Heaven? What happens if you fail miserably to bring peace and just swan around in expensive yachts and hotels instead? Are you then prevented from going through the Pearly Gates?

I suppose no-one on here has the answer.

Corbyn talked to the people affected by floods. Cameron didn't speak to one .

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 31-Dec-15 09:37:37

You can't blame him for that! grin

I would probably be blaming the gov if it was happening to me. Reason would go out of the window.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 31-Dec-15 09:39:46

I can't see these imported emoticons. Even with my glasses on. hmm grumble... grumble...

Anniebach Thu 31-Dec-15 09:44:34

Perhaps he shares his chief advisers opinion and thinks of them as the low white class

whitewave Thu 31-Dec-15 09:45:34

Blaming the government for poor maintenance to flood defences and cuts to capital budget seems quite a rational thing to me

Anniebach Thu 31-Dec-15 10:04:18

If a givernment makes cuts in flood defences they should have the courage to face and speak to the victims of floods

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 31-Dec-15 10:48:00

You must realise it's down to money, and the lack of it.

Anniebach Thu 31-Dec-15 11:01:07

I know it's down to money, it is also down to priorities , making the wealthy wealthier being this governments to priority

Tegan Thu 31-Dec-15 11:39:33

Cost cutting in something that then results in the govt. having to then spend much more than they saved makes no sense. And you can't put a sum on the distress caused to thousands of people. Why are so many people being so complacent about it all?? Have we been brainwashed in some sort of way, I wonder?

durhamjen Thu 31-Dec-15 11:59:45

Jingl, there is no lack of money in this country, just a lack of will to spend it in the right places.

trisher Thu 31-Dec-15 12:51:00

Suppose all the money currently being spent on Cameron and his cronies on "Special Advisers" was instead put into flood prevention- £8.4 million

Anniebach Thu 31-Dec-15 12:56:07

How much to send one man into space whilst so many in this country are suffering,

whitewave Thu 31-Dec-15 13:02:33

This is where if necessary quantitive easing plays its part.

The floods year after year are costing the country untold millions. Spend half that amount up front on defence and maintenance and bingo! It is what all intelligent governments do.

Anniebach Thu 31-Dec-15 13:05:02

Cameron visited and said this needed thought on what could be done

Corbyn visited and said what should be done

Corbyn's visit to York today, for those who want to see it.

rosesarered Thu 31-Dec-15 17:19:55

A lot of different things need to be done to ease flooding in this country, as other posters have pointed out. trees planted, stop the straightening of rivers, dredge or don't dredge certain rivers or parts of rivers, stop building on floodplains, encourage farmers and private landowners to clear out ditches.until all these things and more are done we will see flooding, and even when they are done, we must expect now and then to still see some flooding, either from the sea or excessive rainfall.
ALL governments, for the last 20 years or more have simply tinkered at the edges.

Lilygran Thu 31-Dec-15 17:47:51

Clear out conduits and drains in towns. Stop paving over gardens for parking or patios. Public car parks could have permeable surfaces laid rather than Tarmac. Stop clearing moorland and heath. And everything rosesarered says. These aren't hugely expensive capital projects, they are mostly routine maintenance.

Elegran Thu 31-Dec-15 17:52:06

Clearing drains regularly would help There is one grating near the end of my road which doesn't take away any water - it is always clogged with leaves from the tree that overhangs it, and the water just flows over the top, or lies in a pool.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 31-Dec-15 17:54:25

dj I suppose you are referring to the money owned by the hated"rich". grin There is definitely a shortfall in public funds. (the rich do pay taxes, and keep the economy rolling, one way or another)
