Another fool on the mountains.

Why don't people learn? This was complete idiocy. Two well equipped, experienced young climbers died earlier this minth, a member of Mountain Rescue died this year as well. It's sheer fluke that this wasn't another tragedy.

What a stupid woman. Was she just after publicity, do you think? If so, she apparently succeeded.

It put her rescuers in danger because apparently the weather was too awful for the rescue helicopter to fly. These young men found this fool by accident, giving her some of their dry clothing as she was suffering from hypothermia by then.

What a stupid stupid woman. Words fail me.

There is an article in todays Telegraph saying that people are loosing the ability to read maps as they rely too much on satnavs. Apparently a lorry bound for the Mediterranean arrived at Gibralter Point near Skegness.

Mountain rescue teams are also tired of searching for people with drained smartphone batteries, no sense of direction and no paper map.

Unbelievably foolhardy.
We did a lot of mountain walking at one time, ( England and Scotland) and were often shocked/amazed at the number of young folk who would be up there with minimum clothing and provisions. On the tops the weather can change so suddenly, from a lovely sunny day to a raging storm.
Apart from satnavs, many seem to think that a mobile phone keeps them safe anywhere - but why should the rescue services risk their lives?

Back in the 60's I was in the Lake District on a college trip and it was drummed into us very firmly that we should not go walking in the hills without being properly dressed, with maps and food and drink (Kendal Mint Cake grin )

In the mid seventies we went on a sponsored walk in The Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh.
Two young typists turned up in Platform shoes and mini skirts.
A walk which should have taken 2 1/2 hours took nearly 5.
My then 3 year old was better equiped than they were.
