Referendum leaflets

Am I alone in being appalled that £9 million of our money is to be spent on pro-EU leaflets for every house on behalf of the government? Where is the £9 million for the leave campaign? This is so undemocratic.

I plan to send mine back to the PM at No 10.

confused

Hopefully not the latter, I'd have thought!

Alima Tue 12-Apr-16 15:47:37

ooh Nonnie, do you think they will blackmail us if we opt to leave?
There is a prog on 2 tonight with Nick Robinson. I like him, do you think he will give facts or spin, hopefully the latter.

Luckygirl Tue 12-Apr-16 15:43:11

I still do not know which way to vote.

Nonnie Tue 12-Apr-16 15:38:52

Are you all 'Brexits'? As yet we haven't heard all the arguments but I simply think there is no way the EU will let us have it easy if we leave as that would set a precedent and encourage others to do the same. I think they will be very uncooperative but I wait to hear what comes out when the campaign gets going. No, I didn't go on the thread about it, by the time I saw it it was too big to read and join in.

What also bugs me (apart from the expenditure) is that it lies - it says that the government favours staying in - but that is not true - there are lots of members of the government who do not agree.

NfkDumpling Tue 12-Apr-16 14:39:07

Thanks for the post code Alima - I shall be posting mine back with an appropriately worded note

NfkDumpling Tue 12-Apr-16 14:37:20

But FarNorth at least we wouldn't have to deal with all those extra numpties in Brussels wot all speak foreign!

I've just read my leaflet. Took all of two minutes. It doesn't seem fair that the government can use our money to give a completely biased opinion. It would have been different if it was a balanced for and against argument. Don't like it and it's made me even more determined to "Dew Diffrunt" and vote Out.

Luckygirl Tue 12-Apr-16 14:31:58

Just about to go for my walk and will place it in the post box - in an envelope with Cameron's address on - oh whoops! - I have forgotten to put a stamp on.

Jalima Tue 12-Apr-16 14:30:06

Still waiting for our leaflet, I must not read any more posts about it until it arrives and I have read it grin

Jalima Tue 12-Apr-16 14:25:18

I have never known a time when people have so little faith in the Government of the day and such contempt for politicians in general.
Oh, I have!!

Granny23 Tue 12-Apr-16 13:01:20

I don't know of any EU booklets being delivered here and am wondering if it would be legal to send them out in Scotland, NI/Wales/London now that we are in the official campaign period for the Scottish/Welsh/NI parliaments and for London Mayor. All leaflets/posters/badges etc. have to be accounted for within the allowable spend limits for each candidate/party.

I do not understand the need for such haste in having the referendum, especially when many feel that they do not understand the issues involved. I have never known a time when people have so little faith in the Government of the day and such contempt for politicians in general. Comments I have heard on doorsteps range from 'Wouldnae trust them as far as I could throw them', 'Couldnae organise a piss up in a brewery' to the Scottish version 'Couldnae run a Menage'

FarNorth Tue 12-Apr-16 12:43:45

If the UK votes to leave, we will be at the complete mercy of this shower of numpties with, as nigglynellie says, a death wish.

Galen Tue 12-Apr-16 12:29:53

Filed in circular filing cabinet

Nonnie Tue 12-Apr-16 12:15:34

I'm playing devil's advocate here but does anyone wonder why no one is talking about the content? Could it be that what it says is not controversial? I did hear one expert, who was not political, say that everything stated as a fact was true and that other things were stated as opinions which could not be verified or discounted by either side.

I think it will be very interesting when the campaign proper starts and we hear what JC and co have to say. I look forward to the debate and hope the mud slinging stops and they are all clear about what is fact and what is conjecture.

pompa Tue 12-Apr-16 11:57:29

I am please to get it and will be reading it. It has already prompted me to check if I am registered for a vote (just because you are registered for general elections, you may not be registered for the referendum.)

whitewave Tue 12-Apr-16 11:45:39

All this nonsense would never have happened if there wasn't permanent war inside the Tory party. And once the referendum is over don't for one minute think it will cease, unless of course they split.

Alima Tue 12-Apr-16 11:37:51

Just looked it up, SW1A 2 AA, in case you need it.

Alima Tue 12-Apr-16 11:34:36

I have just received the dreaded booklet. Anyone know the postcode for Number 10?

Chrissye07 Mon 11-Apr-16 20:39:15

But of course smile

rosesarered Mon 11-Apr-16 20:38:13

grin light the fire with it?

Chrissye07 Mon 11-Apr-16 20:35:27

I know where I would like to put the booklet that was on my doorstep when I came home from work but better not say. A tiny booklet with 14 inside pages; 7 of which are pictures?

suzied Mon 11-Apr-16 19:33:45

It'll be going straight in the recycling in most households.

GillT57 Mon 11-Apr-16 18:40:33

Am I the only one in the UK who is wondering about the cost? 27 million households I believe, and it costs £9.7m to produce, print and distribute. I wish I could do that for my business at 30p per copy or am I missing something? I assume that the recently sold off Royal Mail wont be handling them for nothing. If a company who supports staying in is underwriting the production costs this should be stated clearly. I dont have mine yet so cant fully comment on the content.

nigglynellie Mon 11-Apr-16 17:47:10

It's not a leaflet though, it's a flipping booklet!! I can't believe the amount of money it's cost! How on earth could it cost that much?!! Much as I support a conservative government, I am sadly coming to the conclusion that this one has a death wish! FGS, what next?!! I personally think this referendum was a batty idea in the first place! It should have been perfect obvious the division it was going to cause, a lot of people haven't got a clue, me included, what's best for this country till the end of time, so inevitably could use this vote to try and bring the government down. For me the whole exercise is little short of madness.

rosesarered Fri 08-Apr-16 23:33:21

It doesn't work like that.I doubt very much that Cameron will be resigning in any case, but even if he chose to, the Conservative Party simply elect another leader to be in his place. There would not be a General Election, whatever happens ,the next one will be in 2020.
I understand the government wanting to get it's message across to voters about the EU, but a tv message could have done just as well.
I really doubt that anything about expensive leaflet campaigns or any other reason will sway people one way or the other.
