London Mayoral Election

Doesn't seem to be a thread on this. Most GN members won't have a vote but we all have an interest in how the Capital functions and the Mayor's office has a fair amount of power over things like transport.
In the blue corner we have Zak Goldsmith child of Sir James and Lady Annabel, brother to Jemima Khan. Previous jobs editor of The Ecologist (gift from his uncle) and Tory MP for Richmond.

And in the red corner Sadiq Khan, son of Amanullah Khan, who worked as a London bus driver for over 25 years; his mother, Sehrun. Human rights lawyer and then a Labour MP Tooting.

How will London vote in a few weeks time? And if you have a vote - who do you favour and why?

Welshwife Fri 06-May-16 23:01:54

For the Assembly election it is done in two different types of voting. Most members are elected by the normal one vote per person for the candidate you want - then you get a second vote where you vote I think by party and number your choice from 1 through to however many parties are contesting. They have lists of candidates and it is a form of proportional representation and this then determines who gets another seat - this seams to be the section where the UKIP got most if not all their winners.
I heard a snippet of an interview this morning on BBC Wales TV which sounded as if most of the UKIP candidate will be unable to take their seat in the Senydd as they have other full time jobs!!! If that is the case then it sort of takes some of the people's representation away from them - although I personally would not have voted for them.

Yes, he has, Riverwalk.

At first I wondered if the Welsh had taken leave of their senses*, but I think he was voted in because the WA has a form of PR block vote.

Where's the man in the white suit? ;-(

*Sorry, ab and any other Welsh posters.

Riverwalk Fri 06-May-16 22:33:54

I can't see any appropriate thread to put this on and haven't the energy to start a new one - but have I just entered the twilight zone/parallel universe/a bad dream?

Has Neil Hamilton really been voted into office as a UKIP Assembly member for Wales?

What happened?

(Confused of London confused )

whitewave Fri 06-May-16 22:28:55

Apparently they are saying the nasty party is back. Question is - did it ever go away?

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 22:24:58

They will not back off Corbyn , do you think they fear the strength of his support ?

durhamjen Fri 06-May-16 21:50:18

My biggest shock was finding he was a Tory.

Leave Corbyn alone? We've got another four years of attacking him. Hope he stays the course.
On the other hand, if the Tory election expenses scandal really takes off, there may be an election sooner than that.
Apparently Cornwall is even looking into the Tory PCC election finances.

whitewave Fri 06-May-16 21:34:42

It would seem that Tory Central Office totally controlled his campaign. It seems that everyone close to ZG didn't recognise him in what was said with regard the racist propaganda. It didn't work in fact the turnout was much larger than normal and it is suggested that people turned out specifically to vote against the Tory campaign.

Let's hope they have learnt their lesson and will leave Corbyn alone. I won't hold my breath though.

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 21:22:06

I don't know if she still a Muslim Jalima, she has two sons who are and it's reported she is close to her ex inlaws

Perhaps Goldsmith can't handle bullies, thinking of his father then perhaps

Jalima Fri 06-May-16 21:12:56

Which makes his campaign seem all the more odd if Jemima is still a Muslim. Perhaps he handed it over to you-know-who and left it all in his 'capable hands'.

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 21:07:31

His sister Jemima has twittered - if that's what it called - supporting her brothers reputation but also congratulated Khan and London having a Muslim mayor. I have no idea if she has remained a Muslim but I thought her comments were fair and balanced.

Perhaps Goldsmith is a nodding dog,

Jalima Fri 06-May-16 20:57:10

Not ZC, ZG
Probably time for moon tonight already

Jalima Fri 06-May-16 20:56:27

I am only repeating what I thought I heard McDonnell say - he was magnaminous, and seemed surprised by ZC's campaign, although no-one had any idea at that stage what the result would be.

granjura Fri 06-May-16 20:36:21

I know several people who know him well and say he is a really nice guy. Which is why I was truly disappointed and amazed that he allowed his campaign to take a racist and very unplesant turn. Either he is not so nice, or incredibly naïve to allow himself to be manipulated like that.

Amazingly proud of Londoners to not have allowed all this unpleasantness and antisemitic accusations change their mind. Well done Khan.

daphnedill Fri 06-May-16 20:23:02

It will be interesting to hear what Goldsmith has to say for himself over the next few months. He seems in the past to have wanted to project himself as a 'nice guy' and he certainly hasn't done his personal reputation any good.

Somebody may very well have 'put words into his mouth' but it was still his choice to speak them.

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 20:15:29

Then why did he use racist allegations ?

Jalima Fri 06-May-16 19:09:05

Sir??
Are Aussies allowed to be Sir?
Apart from Sir Les Patterson?

I can't remember what JMcD said exactly, as I was nodding off by then, but I think he said that he had campaigned on various issues with ZG and had never found him to be racist.

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 18:55:25

SIR Lynton Crosbie please .

I doubt we will hear from the anti Semitic attackers,

durhamjen Fri 06-May-16 18:40:09

I saw that, Jalima. I thought he was admirably restrained.

indy100.independent.co.uk/article/rightwingers-are-completely-freaking-their-nut-at-the-prospect-of-a-muslim-man-becoming-londons-mayor--ZkWGxqYzVzW?utm_source=indy&utm_medium=top5&utm_campaign=i100

I think there are a few people here who should be questioned about racism.

Jalima Fri 06-May-16 18:30:39

And that tories are beginning to protest now about Goldsmith's appalling, divisive campaign
Did anyone see John McDonnell last night on the BBC election programme?
He put the blame for the campaign on Lynton Crosbie and said that Goldsmithhad been ill-advised.

whitewave Fri 06-May-16 16:40:02

Lessons learned all round hopefully. To play the race card to win an election and/or to get ride of a rival is abhorrent. Let's hope it all calms down down. Those who have to be are dealt with appropriately and we can get on with governing or opposing.

JessM Fri 06-May-16 15:57:39

According to Twitter Khan has won a decisive victory. A tribute to the sense of the London voters. Pity Goldsmith had to damage race relations in London and could not run a clean campaign without this nastiness.

Lillie Fri 06-May-16 14:38:33

Yes, Khan certainly ran the better campaign and pretty much kept saying the right things throughout.
Ah well, what's to be, will be. I doubt whether many will lose sleep either way.

Anniebach Fri 06-May-16 14:31:25

Latest reports say Tories behind in Goldsmith's constituency , seems much anger with some Tory MP's over the smears Goldsmith campaigned with

suzied Fri 06-May-16 12:56:07

Could be a close run thing as turnout isn't great. I wonder if having elections on a Sunday like they do in many European countries would improve the figures? It was a normal working day yesterday and many people may have been too busy, away from home, or just forgotten to vote, who may have voted on a non working day. Although I'm not enamoured of the two main candidates I hope Khan wins.

JessM Fri 06-May-16 10:42:38

Depends on the margin I believe Jalima. If Khan wins by a narrow margin Goldsmith could challenge the result. I gather Khan is currently ahead on first choice votes. And that tories are beginning to protest now about Goldsmith's appalling, divisive campaign.
