London Mayoral Election

Doesn't seem to be a thread on this. Most GN members won't have a vote but we all have an interest in how the Capital functions and the Mayor's office has a fair amount of power over things like transport.
In the blue corner we have Zak Goldsmith child of Sir James and Lady Annabel, brother to Jemima Khan. Previous jobs editor of The Ecologist (gift from his uncle) and Tory MP for Richmond.

And in the red corner Sadiq Khan, son of Amanullah Khan, who worked as a London bus driver for over 25 years; his mother, Sehrun. Human rights lawyer and then a Labour MP Tooting.

How will London vote in a few weeks time? And if you have a vote - who do you favour and why?

durhamjen Sat 07-May-16 15:27:19

Brilliant. In the Northern Ireland elections there are members of a party called People before Profit who have been elected. That sounds like a good party to belong to.

durhamjen Sat 07-May-16 15:30:35

I hope nobody voted for Britain First, whose candidate turned his back on Khan when he was making his speech.

Jalima Sat 07-May-16 15:38:44

Well, some people did Djen:
Paul Golding (Britain First) 31,372 (1.21 per cent)

Just watching a belated QT and they were talking about Trump and the way that political debate has taken such an unpleasant turn in particular the racist undertones -they then went on to say how this seems to be being imported to this country and how the Tories appear to taken up this baton and run with it.

Anniebach Sat 07-May-16 16:50:27

The election fraud has been explained by the Tories - it was an administration error !

Charleygirl Sat 07-May-16 16:55:00

That definitely makes it okay then!

whitewave Sat 07-May-16 17:19:54

The error must have happened a number of times then, as it wasn't just one constituency. Making the usual erroneous assumption about being able to lie and getting away with it.

Anniebach Sat 07-May-16 17:30:31

They have had plenty of practice

granjura Sat 07-May-16 17:34:04

Golding's behaviour was atrocious - shame shame on him and everyone who voted for him.

granjura Sat 07-May-16 17:36:09

Loved this though:

Jonathan Reynolds MP

‎@jreynoldsMP

If only these Britain First folks would adapt to British values

on Twitter. I have no idea who Reynolds is, or which party he supports- but spot on, bravo!

suzied Sat 07-May-16 19:01:49

Loved Sadiq Khan's speech. Interesting analysis on R4 stating that London Mayors become" Mr London" and step aside from party politics. Certainly that has been the case with Ken and Boris. I see JC wasn't attending ( he was in Bristol) .

granjura Sat 07-May-16 19:35:44

Well, shall we see Katie Hopkins running naked up Regent Street with a sausage stuck in her bum?

I don't think so (well hope not)

Alea Sat 07-May-16 20:10:54

Unfair to sausages.

granjura Sat 07-May-16 20:14:37

Well it was easy to agree on this one ;)

GandTea Sat 07-May-16 20:17:56

It's her mouth that needs the sausage stuffed in it (although she talks out of her @@@@ most of the time)

Anniebach Sat 07-May-16 20:49:59

Corbyn is in Bristol to congratulate the new labour mayor

Brilliant comments on here about Paul Golding of Britain First.

durhamjen Sun 08-May-16 01:21:45

Good to see that three of the other candidates for mayor are now on the London Assembly - apart from the Ukipper, of course, but there has to be a downside.
Green party and Libdem candidates are on it.

Lilyflower Sun 08-May-16 08:04:30

Given that Goldsmith put himself out of the race quite early it was a foregone conclusion. Apparently Khan is next thing to a Conservative and he and Corbyn hate each other so there is a silver lining. Poor old Londoners having to have a mayor anyway. No one else wants one.

daphnedill Sun 08-May-16 08:18:28

Why do you think it's a positive that Corbyn and Khan allegedly hate each other? If you're not a Labour voter, why do you care?

Khan is stepping down as an MP, so won't have to follow the Labour whip. As a Mayor of London, his first duty should be to Londoners not his party.

There's a tendency nationwide for local politicians to be independents. I expect Khan will remain in the Labour Party, but he doesn't have to follow all its policies. Johnson certainly didn't.

It seems like yet another attempt to exacerbate tensions in the Labour Party. So what if Khan and Corbyn hate each other? Khan will have his own budget and sphere of influence.

JessM Sun 08-May-16 08:25:52

Quite daphnedill the media are picking away at anything they can find to make it look like the Labour Party is in crisis and to snipe at Corbyn. If they can't find anything to say they make it up.
The victory in Bristol was also a landmark and Khan did not need Corbyn to turn out to swell the crowds in the cathedral, I'm sure.

Maybe KP could get together with Gary Lineker who said he would present a TV programme in his underwear if Leicester came top (or won the cup, or whatever they've done) smile

Alea Sun 08-May-16 08:38:35

SK is a clever politician though. Correct me if I am wrong, but while he was among those Labour MPs who nominated Jeremy Corbyn, enabling him to run for the Labour leadership, Khan did not support Corbyn for the role, voting instead for Andy Burnham. Some contend that it was a move which allowed him to appeal to the Left of the party when it came to the contest to become Labour’s candidate for Mayor of London, a few months later. Riding on a wave of Left-wing “Corby-mania” and enjoying the support of some of Britain’s biggest trade unions, SK "came from behind " to see off the favourite Dame Tessa Jowell, a former minister under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

I am all for him being "his own man" though and it was clear that ZG's campaign was a crass error of judgement on behalf of the Conservative advisers, ironically Sir Lynton Crosbie whose knighthood coincided with the debacle. I wonder if he would have been offered it if they had known then what they know now??

Anniebach Sun 08-May-16 08:44:11

If Corbyn had turned up for Khans signing in , the news coverage would have been - Corbyn didn't wear a tie / didn't sit next to Milliband who is a Jew/ wallowed in reflected glory etc.

Corbyn went to congratulate the mayor of Bristol who is a Labour Party member same as Khan and surprise, surprise, London is not centre of the universe for the entire country , many are fed up with the Westminster bubble and all things London

Corbyn went to Port Talbot and the Tory business secretary chose a jolly in Australia . Corbyn has his priorities sorted out

Jess, who is KP?

grumppa Sun 08-May-16 09:04:56

Misprint for KH - Katie Hopkins?

Alea Sun 08-May-16 09:16:24

Come on, anniebach, whatever happened to keeping an open mind?
If Corbyn had turned up for Khans signing in , the news coverage would have been - Corbyn didn't wear a tie / didn't sit next to Milliband who is a Jew....
Well, I suppose writing the headlines for yourself saves the hassle of going out and buying the paper hmm
