BBC news announced the English football squad would be given extra protection as would the other home countries . Seems we should refer to the UK as England and Co. Or England and the rest

Just a question anniebach - I should remember the answer from the many EU threads, but I cannot, sorry.

Are you pro or anti staying in the EU? If we all carried on with our hatred and resentment of past misdeeds, including killing of our loved ones, we would never have joined the EU let alone some campaigning to stay in with Germany at the forefront and Italy another member. There would be no hope for the future of the EU if that were the case.

I think DH's family were migrants from Wales to the Liverpool area and back again too. Mine were wanderers up and down the Borders too. Both anglicized Welsh surnames and many wandered further afield around the world but none seem resentful of the English.

It's interesting to note that, when we criticise tribalism in the Middle East, it is alive and well in the UK.

Riverwalk, you can twist as much as you choose , I am speaking of equality in the UK in 2016 , it does not exist

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 10:24:20

trisher, BBC has one regional for Scotland/NI Ireland /Wales. At least twelve for England ,

trisher Tue 31-May-16 10:18:44

BBC has regional variations, BBC Wales and BBC Scotland. So can't see why we shouldn't have one channel with English info

That was 51 years ago.

I'm sure the ordinary people of Liverpool had little say in the matter - things are different now. You sound very bitter AB

What about all the people whose houses/villages were demolished to widen motorways, expand airports, and in the future to make way for HS2 etc?

I hope they didn't/don't stay bitter for 50 years.

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 10:10:53

I agree nothing can alter the past, but lessons can and should be learned . There was no equality in the UK fifty years ago and little has changed as most posts on this thread show . We even have a post claiming the national news is the news of England

thatbags Tue 31-May-16 09:58:37

Not about a valley flooded fifty+ years ago to get water to a city (full of Welsh people as well as Irish and English) that needed it either.

Tricia89 Tue 31-May-16 09:58:03

Perhaps chill out or go on a 'desensitising' course?

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 09:42:37

Niggly, you are hardly the person to advise others considering the number of times you bring up WW2 ,

This thread was on equality within the UK not a war which took place seventy years ago,

nigglynellie Tue 31-May-16 09:37:48

ab, What on earth can anybody do about that now?! What's done is done, so why still the bitterness and resentment sixty years along the line? Throughout history all over the world umpteen people and communities have suffered at the hands of others and managed to put it behind them. Most of continental Europe seem to be able to rub along together despite the horrors of the fairly recent past. In Japan, Vietnam and other countries, nations and people that with good reason hated each other, can now meet up in a spirit of reconciliation. Both my mother, and stepfather who spent four years as a POW in the far east and all the horrors that entailed, were very much of this view, which I wholly endorse. None of this was the fault of the present generation or governments. Nothing can alter the past, but attitudes can certainly alter the future for better or worse.

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 09:34:11

No way a British team, the Olympics are bad enough with team GB,

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 09:32:38

Then let's forget all that happened over cufty years ago. I cannot forget it, I still remember holding the hand if an elderly lady who sobbed because she wanted to be interred with her husband and two children but has been told to dig them up.

Why on earth ask what has Liverpool done for Wales, silky question

thatbags Tue 31-May-16 09:15:07

1965 is more than fifty years ago. It happened. time to get over it, maybe? I think most people will have by now.

And of course, what has Liverpool and the Mersey ever done for North Wales? I know a lot of Joneses (have some in the family and among close friends); all of them come from Liverpool or Cheshire. Funny that.

granjura Tue 31-May-16 09:01:41

So imho- and I am sure some here will disagree, France and Italy and others should have one team, and so should the British (not the English, quite rightly so).

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 08:57:07

I spoke of a time when with the exception of one Tory MP who abstained , the MP's in Wales voted against flooding a valley to provide Liverpool with water , no planning permission was required from the various depts in Wales, a village and farms were destroyed as was the entire valley

This was 1965 not when the Normans invaded or the Tudors were on the English throne .

Liverpool apologised in the nineties, - so sorry we stamped over you, ignored your pleas to save a community , devasted the elderly in the valley who couldn't be buried in their family plots, you did have the choice to dig up your dead though. What England want's England gets , ask the Irish and the Scots .

FarNorth Tue 31-May-16 08:35:04

Just a thought, at the time nigglynellie spoke of, the UK was at war with Germany and each was inflicting vicious damage on the other.
At the time Anniebach mentioned, England and Wales were supposed to be friendly partners within the UK.

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 08:34:32

BBC means BRITISH Broadcasting not English Broadcasting , the licence fee is the same in the four countries .

nigglynellie Tue 31-May-16 08:19:29

Yes, they were always dashing over the border in order to escape the kings men!!!!! Must say, I loved that series, but then I am a Derek Jacobi fan as well as a history one!

thatbags Tue 31-May-16 07:12:10

Yes, I was thinking about the Normans in Wales (as well as England) when I mentioned Cadfael.

nigglynellie Tue 31-May-16 06:55:10

The Nomans actually began the invasion of Wales soon after the conquest, doing various deals with different Chieftains. There was sporadic insurrection in Wales, hence the building of those castles, till the laws in Wales act of 1535-42 when Wales was finally incorporated into the kingdom of England.

Jalima Mon 30-May-16 23:55:49

Ignore my post above
granjura already posted that!

Jalima Mon 30-May-16 23:54:50

I thought Italy was the result of the unification of several small states, not just north and south.

Jalima Mon 30-May-16 23:51:38

thatbags and annieb wasn't Cadfael on tv ages ago with Derek Jacobi as the eponymous monk?

daphnedill Mon 30-May-16 22:48:28

PS. Bavaria (Bayern) still doesn't like to think of itself as part of Germany.
