You didn't think I would ignore this did you?

trisher Fri 10-Jun-16 23:00:02

I also think young people have many friends and acquaintances from other EU countries who are studying and working over here. They also realise that there are opportunities for them to travel abroad to study and work. Their world is much more integrated and multi-racial than that lived in by most older people.

I would really like to know how true it is that there are dangerous terrorist types living here that we can't deport because of EU regs. How can that be? Surely the rest of Europe is sympathetic to the dangers of terrorism.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 10-Jun-16 22:42:36

I think young people are likely to have plans for future travel and think being part of Europe will make that easier. They are probably right.

I wonder why they young may be keen to Remain in EU?
I fear that readership of the Mail, the Express, the Times,The Telegraph and The Sun is much higher in older age groups. All these have been hard at it printing alarmist, and often racist rubbish with little regard for the truth. They are owned by rich men who wish to have power over politicians. (Remember: "IT WAS THE SUN WOT WON IT" after the 1992 election? And Murdoch is on record as saying he has less power with UK in the EU.
(I spoke to one elderly woman today who seems convinced that all foreigners are violent rapists - wonder where she got that idea from? I guess there is not a single immigrant in her quiet village in Wales, so hopefully she can still sleep easily in her bed.)
It would be nice to think that all that extra education young people have makes them less likely to be gulled by the contents these rags, should they read them.
Also they tend to study, work, socialise and travel in a multi-racial world these days so just possibly less of a tendency to xenophobia?

@Jalima

All the polls I've seen have shown that overall 70-80% of 18-24 year olds intend to vote Remain.

daphnedill Fri 10-Jun-16 21:36:09

@Ana

Tell that to Patrick Minford.

Jalima Fri 10-Jun-16 20:45:07

It is incredible that it is mainly our older generations like ourselves that are falling for the Brexit and Russian propaganda for us to leave the EU.
I mentioned before that I would listen to younger people and vote accordingly; however, the younger generation have left me totally confused Granddaughter. There seems to be as much a mix of opinions as there is with the older people I spoke to.

Ana Fri 10-Jun-16 20:40:44

The quality of the degrees a lot of people emerge from after attending University leaves a lot to be desired these days. Of course young people want to go - some couldn't care less about accrued debt because they know they'll never have to pay it off.

Tony Blair has a lot to answer for!

Granddaughter Fri 10-Jun-16 20:35:59

I had not thought the British public would be so gullible until I saw tonight's polls.

It is incredible that it is mainly our older generations like ourselves that are falling for the Brexit and Russian propaganda for us to leave the EU.

Putin must be delighted as will Trump.

God help our future generations if we let them down so badly through our prejudices & pigheadedness.

daphnedill Fri 10-Jun-16 20:34:49

@Jalima

I don't drink alcohol, but I reckon you'd be OK with one. ;-)

daphnedill Fri 10-Jun-16 20:33:44

@whitewave

The quote is from Patrick Minford, who said “Over time, if we left the EU, it seems likely that we would mostly eliminate manufacturing, leaving mainly industries such as design, marketing and hi-tech. But this shouldn’t scare us.”

His justification is that 50% of young people go to university anyway, but he doesn't have any answer when asked about the other 50%.

This is consistent with what Douglas Carswell wants, which is a hi-tech society similar to Singapore.

Both want two distinct groups of people - the intelligent and highly skilled and the skivvies to do the dirty work.

This is the agenda people are talking about.

Ceesnan Fri 10-Jun-16 20:26:12

Oops! Go away for a couple of hours and come back to find I've been told off for being flippant. Well I've had a quick look at the GNHQ rules of engagement and nowhere can I find a mention of humour/banter/lighthearted remarks being banned from political threads. I have enough going on in real life to contend with, so if I want to make a remark that is not as "deep" as some would like then I bloody well will angry

Jalima Fri 10-Jun-16 20:24:49

If people are still dithering, this is a good read, although you'll need to make a cup of tea (or equip yourself with your favourite tipple) before sitting down to read it.
How many bottles of wine (white, Australian) will I need before I tackle it?

(apologies for levity)

whitewave Fri 10-Jun-16 20:16:29

Brexit economist said that if we leave the EU "over time we will eliminate our manufacturing business"!!!!!!!

And that from a Brexit economist -good god.

whitewave Fri 10-Jun-16 20:11:20

Neil has made him look utterly ridiculous.

whitewave Fri 10-Jun-16 20:04:46

This is what is really scary.

whitewave Fri 10-Jun-16 20:02:49

What a ghastly man. He is blaming absolutely everything on immigration. Here we have what right wing populism looks like in real life.

Ana Fri 10-Jun-16 20:01:45

At least he's managed to tame his brillo-pad hair down a bit - that was even scarier!

whitewave Fri 10-Jun-16 20:01:01

Is there any truth in anything he has said!!!!!

rosesarered Fri 10-Jun-16 19:52:25

In fact his grin is scarier than his scowl.

rosesarered Fri 10-Jun-16 19:51:53

Andrew Neil is scary.

Lazigirl Fri 10-Jun-16 19:47:45

Andrew Neil is mincing Farage on tv at the moment!

rosesarered Fri 10-Jun-16 19:42:06

There is enough serious comment going on to take a slight bit of humour, nobody is going in for a full on comedy routine.

rosesarered Fri 10-Jun-16 19:39:46

Ceesnan made a light hearted comment Tegan for gods sake, don't go over entirely to the dark side.

Tegan Fri 10-Jun-16 18:57:14

'.......we could use some light relief with the EU being the only topic at the moment, on here, the tv, radio etc.'Only on the political threads which you can choose to ignore. I see no reason why humour should be introduced into subjects that are of great national importance I'm afraid.Plenty of light hearted threads to join in on if you want to.
