The one indisputable FACT in this referendum debate

Like many of us, I prefer to deal in facts, not surmise, assumptions, or what might be, or might not happen. The truth is that neither side have a clear idea of what leaving or remaining in the EU might entail, except for one clear fact.

This is, that if we remain, we will continue to have no control over numbers of immigrants from the EU, entering the country.

We all agree that immigration is a Good Thing, but uncontrollable immigration is another issue completely.

Good soundbite in the debate. Boris wanted a Boris Island in the Thames. We need to make sure the UK doesn't become Boris Island. I see he's already offered Farage a job in his government, along with a seat in the Lords, because he can't manage to get a proper seat in the commons.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 19:31:14

Well!! Gove isn't a man with a plan he is a man with a bag full of soundbites most of which as a minister of state he worked for the absolute opposite. He has recently just arrived in Damascus or he's lying

There was a programme on last night which showed people living in Lanzarote.
There was a couple there who said they had done really well out of the UK links with the EU so they would vote to stay in.
However, if they lived in the UK they would probably vote to leave. I was actually shouting at them. How selfish can you get?

durhamjen Wed 15-Jun-16 19:27:01

The list includes that famous socialist Jacob Rees Mogg, along with IDS and Liam Fox. It also includes those who talked out any measure to get more money for the NHS, Christopher Chope, Peter Bone and friends.

Not easy withing families either! Has anyone else found it very difficult to discuss this with close relatives and friends? We were recently in the UK and we had some very difficult moments which we found difficult to deal with.

This is interesting.

voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/06/15/brexit-budget-threat-is-tearing-tory-party-to-shreds/

Osborne says he will have to bring in an emergency budget if Brexit happens. However, 50 MPs will vote against it as they do not want more austerity.
They are the people who voted with Osborne for all his cuts over the last six years. Not that they are just out for themselves, of course.

The exchange rates tend to be far more stable and only vary by a small amount - and often not on a daily basis. The £/€ exchange was under 70p and then remained about 70 for a good few weeks before starting the recent movement till today's level. I actually do watch it day to day.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 19:11:10

Watching Gove - he is hopeless.

He blames the EU for destroying his father's business. Apparently his Dad said today that isn't what happened.

He is intent on destroying people's lives and businesses just to fulfil a personal wish.

durhamjen Wed 15-Jun-16 19:06:20

It will not be over in a week.

This is about Northampton.

"I asked a local British taxi driver how he intended to vote. He said to stay in. Why? Because he says he hears too much racism from people talking about the referendum. "There's real, real hatred," he said. "I hear so much of it. I can't vote for that." "

Expats here are happy as larry, as their high Swiss salaries have shot up again in real terms, and have been ditching all UK investments and transfered their money here in time! Win win for them.

granjura Wed 15-Jun-16 18:44:01

roses those of us who depend on UK pensions in £s which is falling significantly, in countries where the currency is rising- are maybe not so flippant about it. And yes, it will affect the economy hugely- and fatcats will benefit as they are already playing the buy and sell game!

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 18:34:22

Yes rose and whenever there is a significant movement there is an explanation given - in this case sterling has fallen against a basket of currencies because of fear of Brexit

As was predicted by so many of the experts that Brexit happily rubbish

Tegan Wed 15-Jun-16 18:29:03

'So just for purely selfish reasons, then?'
..no, not selfish. these are huge, multinational companies; it's not just my family that I'm thinking of. And, not just the companies themselves but the subsidiary [sp]companies that will go down with them. Rolls Royce and Bombardier 'are' Derby...I dread to think what will happen if they relocate.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 18:13:06

Sorry obieone?

Not 6th June but today. As is welshwifes facts over the last 4 days

It is what is happening as the fear of Brexit grips the money markets.

obieone Wed 15-Jun-16 18:12:32

If you had not known it was 6 June, you would have said so.

rosesarered Wed 15-Jun-16 18:11:58

Sterling goes up and down all the time!

obieone Wed 15-Jun-16 18:10:02

So it was 6 June whitewave. Which you knew. Sigh.

Welshwife, that is just the Euro and you are talking about 4 days worth. I cannot be bothered to look up which 4 days.

Welshwife Wed 15-Jun-16 18:07:25

It affects every single item I buy on a daily basis!!!

Welshwife Wed 15-Jun-16 18:06:45

The € has gone from being 75p to 79.88 in the last few days. I keep a good eye on the two currencies as the exchange rate affects us all the time. The Euro was only 70p a few weeks ago and the $ about 62p

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 18:04:49

That's always happening -derail I mean. The trick is to pretend it doesn't exist.

Welshwife Wed 15-Jun-16 18:04:07

Looking on the money site XE which gives the mid point exchange rates the £ Sterling has gone from costing 65p per $ to 70p within about four days. The

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 15-Jun-16 18:02:42

That's if anyone's interested. Which I doubt. smile]

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 15-Jun-16 18:01:38

My remark a while ago had more to do with accusing others of trying to derail a thread. Nothing to do with views expressed by anyone.

rosesarered Wed 15-Jun-16 17:54:08

That is up to you Tegan but you can't expect everybody to vote to remain because of that.I have based my vote on what I see ( as do a lot of others) on what is in the best interests of the UK for a long time to come, no self interest in it.
I realise that you will vote that way for a reason ( worry about their jobs) but there are other things to consider ( for me.)
