I agree that this decision is so momentous, so permanent,and it scares me that my future, and that of my children could be decided by ignorant people who have been misled and lied to. I do not mean those whose view is different to mine necessarily, but I mean those who have not thought it out properly, those who have little knowledge of economics ( and I include myself in this, although I have done my very best by reading all that I can, watching the debates etc). I think this is so important that the vote should be invalid unless a certain percentage of the electorate turn out to vote. Otherwise,we could have the potential result of say 51% of a 40% turnout deciding our future. Terrifying prospect to my mind.

Some of the posters he has put his name to leave a lot to be desired. They are following a nationalistic approach when they indicate "the others"

I was also a bit by the man at the Brexit event today saying that the pound would rise against the euro and foreign holidays would be cheaper. The pound has fallen steadily during the campaign, falls even more sharply when the leave margin increases and goes back up when Remain goes up in the polls.

Thanks for posting that. I was actually looking for that article, which I read last week, when I found the video.

People over 75 would, of course, remember pre-war, wartime and immediate postwar times and knew real conflict. Maybe we've become too complacent.

Yes mamie those are Mums sentiments exactly. I think the memories that these folk have is so different to our generation, and they understand only too well the potential danger. We can say oh it will never happen but I don't think they have that confidence and rightly so.

What on earth is Boris Johnson playing at? Now he's promising an amnesty for all illegal immigrants.

I know one thing for sure. I wouldn't trust the man to stick with his word for more than five minutes.

I can't find the link now, but I read somewhere that over 75s are more in favour of Remain than the slightly younger age group. This very moving letter from one World War 2 veteran was published last week.

What a pity that immigration has taken over as the main issue. There are issues with the EU that worry me immensely but that is not one of them (apart from the deportation of Commonwealth citizens) because I think the issue of immigration has been distorted, perhaps deliberately, perhaps not.

He did so, because it was in the manifesto. And it is democracy.
He also wrongly thought that he would get the result he wanted quite easily.

All the surveys show a TENDENCY to vote Leave rising with age. It doesn't mean all oldies will. Come to think of it, I'm an oldie and I'm voting Remain. I'm fairly sure my late father, who was an old-fashioned Conservative and ex RAF pilot, would have voted Remain.

I agree totally with your comment about voting boys to do an adult's job. David Cameron has always reminded me of the blow-up Mr Blobby my kids had when they were little. You could punch him and he would always stand up straight again with a sickly smile on his face. I don't think he should ever have agreed to the referendum. He did to save his own position, not for the good of the country.

Daphnedill, this is because, in the last two elections, we elected boys to do an adult's job. I get really fed up with their bickering at serious debates and when on TV. I hate the interruptions you get from the interviewer when I really want to hear the answer although I do accept they have to move the debate on, move them back to the original question, challenge etc but do they have to do it after only three words have been uttered quite so often?

I agree, Devorgilla. I can't believe that the result and the future of the country for generations could, in theory, hang on a handful of votes.

At the very least, there should have been an intensive programme to make sure people know what they're voting for - not the emotive farce we've had with politicians playing silly games with their own careers.

The public deserves better than the downright lies which have been dished up.

We should have listened to Clem Attlee's words - “the referendum is a device of dictators and demagogues”. He said this because it was used by Hitler to give credence to his actions. Margaret Thatcher quoted Clem too agreeing with him.
One view is that it does not work in a representational democracy like ours, although it can work in a straight democracy like Switzerland.
I can see the use of it for an independence vote for Scotland, Ireland or Wales as they were separate entities once to test the majority feeling as those areas would have to rely on other MPs to vote it through by the representation method. A clear vote either way would guide the elected representatives.
I find it of great concern that a very small number of people can decide our future one way or the other in a irreversible decision like this one.

I am going to vote remain for a number of reasons the first is that I have grandsons who will soon be on the job market. I see that the foreign investors are already taking their money out of the UK. Everyone agrees that there will be a recession
I cannot vote for that and perhaps condem my grandchildren to employment and recession.
