England 50/50 dependent on London but could be a shock as so far Brexit.

It is funny he he not funny ha ha listening to the politicians commentating. The working class vote so far is Brexit, they have not been listened to . The Labour vote 'so far' has crumbled. However the night is young on 37/382 declared, it could all change.

I wonder if the vote is going along class lines?

Exactly, Maggie! And not only that, but an establishment which really doesn't care about them. I'm always struck when I go to some deprived areas how much regeneration is being funded by the EU. People are whistling in the wind, if they think a UK government committed to a 'small state' will replace that funding.

I'm against an 'establishment' which turns a blind eye to tax havens, cuts benefits, promotes an austerity con, centralises education more than ever, refuses to intervene in the housing market failure, etc etc, but the people behind Leave support more of it. And the maddening thing is that they don't care. It's a game and they're rich enough to come out of it all smiling, whichever way it goes.

Isn't it bizarre that the thread with a light hearted touch is now playing host to the serious stuff results as they happen?

Me too, daphnedill I'm just hoping the Scottish and Northern Irish vote saves the day. Just heard someone describe the leave vote in Hartlepool as a vote against the establishment. That'd be the one they want to hand more power over to then?

It did cross my mind that that voters would rail against 'threats' like the Nissan position.

It looks like England is voting Leave and Scotland is voting Remain. I have a bad feeling about this now.

I'm very worried. If Leave has won, I truly believe the country has committed an act of lunacy.

Just reading some tweets about Nissan and Sunderland. Apparently UKIP is claiming that Nissan workers didn't like being told by the country that their jobs might be at risk. What the hell did they expect? Would they prefer that Nissan winds down its factory without warning them? Madness!

Can't help but find it obscene.

Of course the money men (and women) will make money. Once upon a time I worked for Reuters on the economics news floor. Even the journalists practically wet themselves when there was turbulence in the markets - it really didn't matter to them which way anything went. 'Buy on the rumour; sell on the news' is all they care about.

Turnout in Glasgow is a very low 56%. Wasn't expecting it to be that low.

I can just imagine how much money is being made by traders gambling with the value of the Pound. They're probably finding the volatility exciting.

Hedge fund managers and currency traders are making a fortune! They couldn't care less which way the vote goes, because they'll always make money as long as there's trade.

I think Miliband has a point. This has been far too much about party politics and people taking umbrage when 'experts' have given advice.

I really DO understand that there are people in this country who are suffering, but that's got sod all to do with the EU. I really wonder how people think the country will improve if Leave wins. Over the last few weeks, I haven't had one proper answer when I've asked that question.

The pound shot up to a high after 9.30 pm, so it's not surprising it is dropping after every Leave win.

Miliband has said some Labour areas might be protesting against the government as well as the EU. Perhaps that helps explain Sunderland.

Because it doesn't export all over the world. Nissan UK exports most of its cars to mainland Europe. Its logistics operation relies on coordination with its Spanish plant.

A few weeks ago (before all this referendum nastiness kicked off) my son went to a talk with the head of Nissan UK. He wouldn't commit himself (not surprisingly), but he hinted very strongly that leaving the EU would affect Nissan's operation and planning.

So sterling rose after the Gibraltar vote and has lost 6% in the 15 minutes following the Sunderland count. What's that old Chinese curse - May you live through interesting times?

Why would Nissan remove a perfectly good car manufacturing industry which exports all over the world?

Thinking very carefully and actually pulling the plug are two different things.

I don't understand the Sunderland result. Nissan has already indicated it will think very carefully about its future if the result is Leave. It provides thousands of jobs in the area, inculding the supply chain and the money spent in local businesses, so why? (Am genuinely trying to understand.)

Sorry daphne I missed that part of your post - can't keep up. Yes, I wondered if it was to do with the border. I've been to Gibraltar, but only for the day!
