.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:49:49

Since when have you been an expert in economics, roses? Mark Carney is due to make an announcement this morning.

So what advantages do YOU see from leaving the EU?

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:47:31

Good-oh rose

rosesarered Fri 24-Jun-16 07:46:28

No, sterling was bound to drop at first, it will come back again.
The only whinging will come from those on the Remain side!

rosesarered Fri 24-Jun-16 07:44:16

Woke up an hour ago to the good news that the Leave camp have won!smile
52%to48%. I wasn't going to give up my good nights sleep though DH stayed up all night.Like a lot of others I feel hopeful and excited about our future now, and this is the start of something good.Things cannot happen overnight, it will take years to sort out properly. It's a great start to the weekend, going for a celebratory lunch later.wine

Nelliemoser Fri 24-Jun-16 07:42:59

Well the brexiters have just won I hope none of them start whingeing about this mornings 8% drop in £sterling and how much more expensive their holiday abroad might might be.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:39:52

@granjura

Exactly! What price democracy when there's no money for food on their plates?

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:39:12

Why isn't it acceptable, when so many people didn't know the facts and couldn't be bothered to find out?

Maybe everything should have been delivered in five minute snippets.

The poor will be poorer and the only people who will gain will be the fat cats of the 'rentier' class.

granjura Fri 24-Jun-16 07:38:28

Found their voice - will they find the jobs?

granjura Fri 24-Jun-16 07:37:04

J52 - I feel as if I've personally been pushed over the edge of the cliff ...

on UK pensions here- the value of which has fallen 40% overnight, and our healthcare will probably be cancelled soon (good job I had my knee done in March- couldn't afford it now- I'd have to come back and sponge on the NHS as so many expats do)..

but it feels like my heart is broken- and that is so much more important than my purse sad a massively sad and depressing world to wake up to today.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:36:48

Democracy is an illusion. People under 45ish haven't got what they voted for, but will have to live with the consequences for decades.

Nobody has won any greater 'say' in the way their lives are controlled and the poor will be poorer.

What do you think this will achieve beyond the soundbites?

Anya Fri 24-Jun-16 07:33:56

From the turnout I suspect that this has engaged many who were never interested in politics before, or felt 'Why bother? They're all the same.' This is, quite simply, democracy at work.

Whatever your politics we have to accept what the majority have decided. To imply that 'the majority' are stupid, racist, or any other derogatory term is not acceptable. And as bags has said, it is the working class who have spoken.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 07:33:32

It is what it is. Now we start living with the decision and it scares the wits out of me. I wasn't looking forward to growing old in the UK, but now I'm dreading it. Aw well, one day at a time.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:32:24

OK no point in arguing. Let's hope that the working man isn't badly effected.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:29:18

Democracy is what matters to me. Like I always said. From the start of the campaign.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:25:51

I balanced it by having a different starting point, which is Listen to the concerns of the Working Classes. Doesn't mean I always agree with what they're saying; it means I think their concerns are real and should be addressed however much the better off, the chattering classes, and the money markets patronisingly think they know better.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:23:19

It amuses me right now to think that the most vociferous politicos on gransnet are going to have a field day. They will be able to doomsay and moan to their hearts' content. Not much change there then wink

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:22:54

Blimey bags (smile)

So how did you balance remaining against leaving with the very real potential of getting a nationalist right wing government that will take away rights, environmental rights etc.

That was where I was coming from.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:22:36

@ petra

I don't understand that comment. Do your two West Indian friends have British nationality? If so, they're British. Why should their origin be relevant?

grannyactivist Fri 24-Jun-16 07:21:40

Oh dear. sad

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:20:49

We've moved on a little since 1845! Engels' vision didn't work out too well!

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:19:25

Ceesnan, I wouldn't have been cheering from the rooftops. I would, however, have felt very relieved and would have continued to fight inequality, tax dodges, cuts to public services, etc in any way I can.

The poorest, most vulnerable and disenchanted have just shot themselves in the foot. Meanwhile, the much despised fat cats will still continue to make money.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:18:08

Don't worry, ww, my future is solid progressive left like Engels and Tony Benn.

"In the original The Condition of the Working Class in England, written in 1845, Friedrich Engels argued that the industrial revolution, which had enriched the owners of capital, had done nothing for the people who lived and worked in the industrial cities. The same message is coming back from the post-industrial revolution, and Labour has to find a way to respond."

Philip Collins in The Times today.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:13:23

Your celebrations should be tempered a tad ceesnan until we can be certain that our economy can be stabilised, because if not the vast majority who votedBrexit will be hit, by job losses on an industrial scale, expensive debt and no money for the NHS.

petra Fri 24-Jun-16 07:13:09

GandTea My 2 West Indian friends voted to leave. They are more patriotic than me.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:10:36

So what advantages do you expect to see, Ceesnan?
