All over fb there are people calling anyone who voted Leave 'thick', 'uneducated' etc.

Do we not live in a democracy? Shouldn't we accept that more than 50% of the population want to leave the EU. I don't suppose that the same people would have been called names had they voted the other way.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 21:25:06

I can't see into the minds of the Brexit politicians. Who knows how they think? I don't believe Boris is racist. Not sure about thick though. grin

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:22:57

I suppose Tony Benn and other high profile opponents of the EU (like Cameron and corbyn until recently hmm) are uneducated too.

Wish people wouldn't talk such bollocks.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 21:22:07

I doubt that. But a lot of your co-voters were.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 21:21:31

Sod the "little people".

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:21:18

Oh yes. I'm thoroughly uneducated. Total racist thicko, me.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 21:21:01

I'm not sure I care greatly about the "poor" at the moment.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 21:19:41

Then it's lack of education. Because that's another reason the outers voted that way.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:18:48

The lack of understanding of the "little people" is what has shocked me most. it's bad enough in money magnates and rich politicians, but it's truly shocking when it comes from people who claim to care about the poor.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:16:36

I agree, lucky. People whose wages have fallen, people on zero hours contracts, people with no job security have genuine worries. They are not racists for possibly thinking that high immigration will cause them even further problems. It's a reasonable supposition to make, even if it's wrong.

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 21:14:36

Sorry thatbags, I was asking luckygirl, who has replied. I should have made that clearer!

Deedaa Fri 24-Jun-16 21:14:32

Well it will help the posh boys with their Rolls Royces. They're the only ones who will be better off because they always are.

I think that anyone who's waiting for billions to be poured into the NHS or Social Housing is in for a long wait.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:14:18

Oh... I think I may have figured it out. Full-stop missing. As you were.

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 21:14:08

On the immigration issue, which clearly influenced many people, the governments of several countries in the EU failed to take seriously the concerns that people had/have and labelled those with worries as racists, which pushed them into a corner. There is a difference between racists and decent people who are frightened/concerned. Many people misguidedly imagined that Leave would solve the immigration issue. Again a case of being asked to vote on something that they have insufficient knowledge to decide.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 21:12:20

niggly, I have not said anywhere that the referendum was undemocratic. I have not thought it either. So I'm a bit puzzled as to where you've got that idea from.

Ginny42 Fri 24-Jun-16 21:06:37

Rolls Royce shares are up? Will that put food on the tables of the land?

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 21:06:18

I voted leave, but agree that Farage is a buffoon. It was not about personalities.

In my view the referendum is undemocratic, irrespective of which view prevailed. It is a blunt instrument and needs refining. There should be a minimum turnout rule and a minimum gap rule - the fact that the vote was so very close means that we have no clear view from the British people. It is crazy that a huge decision like this should huge in just a few percentage points.

It is also a cop-out to ask people to vote on something so complex that few can really understand the concepts. It is just plain wrong.

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 21:02:49

DH has just asked me that!! Osbourne has certainly kept a low profile today.!

petra Fri 24-Jun-16 20:57:51

Rolls Royce shares are up, so it's not all gloom. Does anyone know when Osbourne is going to announce his emergency budget?

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 20:54:47

This adoption of populist nationalist right wing ideogy with its emphasis on the other and insularness is something I never dreamed my wildest nightmare would manifest itself in the UK

I totally misjudged Farage as I thought he was a joke, an aberration that the British voter would never accept. This is a black day indeed

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 20:48:59

Been a salutary lesson then.

durhamjen Fri 24-Jun-16 20:47:42

Joelsnan, the local news at 18.30 said that £2 billion had been wiped off stocks in businesses in the North East. That was a fact. How do you suggest I check it? Stock exchange closed then.
What facts have you got to dispute it?

Just a kick up the backside, niggly?
No going back. Anyone who was too complacent or disinterested will not get another chance, until they are too old to care.

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 20:32:38

Hear, hear Joelsnan, and thatbags Why was the referendum undemocratic? Would it have been undemocratic if remain had won? The EU needed a kick up the backside, so this could be the long overdue wake-up call! As for the young, well perhaps this will be a lesson to those too complacent or disinterested to get out and vote, instead of presuming a done deal or voting the wrong way for a laugh. It's called growing up!

Jalima Fri 24-Jun-16 20:16:49

I did not vote Brexit, but I think your posts are very sensible, Joelsnan

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 20:12:14

I agree with you joelsnan - but I am not happy about the process that has brought us to this point: political ineptitude, breast beating, insults, racist sneers, outright lies, scaremongering and an undemocratic referendum. None of this is good for any of us.
