Why are there so many threads on the ( dreadful) referendum ? I can't read them all!

Jane10 Mon 27-Jun-16 08:54:55

It 'beggars belief' that some people cant seem to understand the trouble the country is now in. However, I'm sure the harsh reality will soon intrude and even they will notice.

Jenty61 Mon 27-Jun-16 08:40:26

I agree far too many threads about threads re the referendum! its all speculation what people are talking about and far too early to know whats going to happen....

isnt that against gransnet guide lines 'threads about threads' ?

gangy5 Mon 27-Jun-16 08:29:38

The remainers were the most aggressive on the pre referendum threads and now they're doing their stuff on the current threads. It beggars belief how they are getting so worked up. Perhaps they should take something to calm themselves. Their knee jerk reactions are very immature. We're only 4 days after the event. Let's face it, at this stage, nobody knows how things will turn out, Why is it that the remainers think they already know?

durhamjen Mon 27-Jun-16 00:50:31

One of my sisters lives in an area where the vote was 51.9 out and 48.9 remain. That's scary, isn't it?
The turnout was 79.6%

Isn't this a thread about other threads?
Yes

No, it wasn't half the country, but it was a slight majority of those who bothered to turn out to vote, which was a higher percentage than normally do vote.
Many others who could have voted did not bother so they have no right to grumble.
Quite a few of those were enjoying Glastonbury, which shows where their priorities lie.

That is how democracy works, like it or not
I don't like it but there we have it.

Shall We start a Christmas thread and have some good cheer
I am off to put the sprouts on

Rosesarered,

May I politely point out that it wasn't 'well over half the country', it was 51.9% of a 72.2% turnout. That's all. A very narrow 4% and that's why people are angry.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 26-Jun-16 22:33:58

Or perhaps yet another "I've fallen out with with my daughter/dil/partner/milkman.

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 22:33:26

the worried comments I can understand, but not the other kind.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 26-Jun-16 22:32:39

No one makes anyone read any thread. Of course there are bound to be a lot of threads about it. Get real.

Or start yer own knitting one. hmm

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 22:31:09

what I can do easily though, is shrug off all the acrimonious, insulting and often downright bitchy comments from some on here who are angry at the outcome of the referendum.

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 22:28:54

no, listen with great interest. Why, is that what you do?

durhamjen Sun 26-Jun-16 22:24:12

What do you do, roses, when something about Brexit comes on the news? Put your fingers in your ears, shut your eyes and say Lah, lah, lah?

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 21:15:11

OK (shrug)

Jane10 Sun 26-Jun-16 21:13:59

Roses I can't and wont apologise. I feel personally so deeply shaken up and disturbed by the appalling step a proportion of the electorate has taken that I can only continue to think the worst of them. This is a national emergency and I can't understand why some people cant see that. Maybe they don't see the bigger picture. No point in exchanging opinions. We can only agree to disagree - intensely.

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 17:19:47

Jane you don't know what will happen yet, this is just anger and disappointment talking.Understandable in the circumstances, but to talk to fellow Gransnetters in a rude, or arrogant dismissive fashion is not on ( although quite few of you are doing it.)

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 17:15:35

I also doubt that 'a good number are regretting their vote' either, what is a good number? This is rubbish.

Jane10 Sun 26-Jun-16 17:15:34

That sort of comment explains your understanding of economics! A LOT of money and jobs will go.

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 17:13:46

It was a LOT of people Jane regardless of exact percentages.

Jane10 Sun 26-Jun-16 17:10:32

Just one thing roses half the country didnt actually vote brexit. Only a whisker over 50% of those who voted: something like 37%. Not exactly conclusive. Meanwhile back to what the hell are we going to do?! A fine mess we're in now.

varian Sun 26-Jun-16 17:07:01

roses - over half the country did NOT vote to leave - only 37.3% of the electorate voted to leave and a good number of them are now regretting their mistake.

When the first devolution referendum was held in Scotland more than half of those who voted said yes to devolution but it was not allowed because it was less than 40% of the electorate.

It is the policy of this government that if a trade union holds a ballot for a strike, no legitimate action can be taken unless 40% of those eligible to vote supported the strike.

To put such an important, complex and far-reaching decision to a referendum and then accept that we have to destroy all the good work that has been done over our lifetimes in working together with our EU allies on the basis of 37.3%, is reckless in the extreme and totally undemocratic.

rosesarered Sun 26-Jun-16 17:04:48

Perhaps your own post is a 'red rag' djen (that would never occur to you of course)
And yes to the OP there are far too many threads.

durhamjen Sun 26-Jun-16 17:00:42

You have surely read gangy5's post. Red rag and all that.

Sorry, roses, why are you so damn rude to people on gransnet?

sunseeker Sun 26-Jun-16 16:59:46

I understand people have strong feelings about the result of the referendum but what I think the OP was getting at is the number of threads about it. By all means express your feelings about it but can't it be kept to just a few threads. We all have opinions about it but don't want to have to scroll through so many threads to find something else to post about. Perhaps GNHQ could have a topic just for the referendum threads.
