As the hysterical left weep into their lattes...

Well said, Libby Purves and Peter Tatchell! Tatchell is quoted as saying "The left must listen to Brexit supporters and their concerns. Very wrong to dismiss them all as racists and xenophobes". Of those anguished 'hysterical lefties': "many of them mean well [ouch!] yet elitism erupted like a poisoned boil". Superb!

Elitism. The other thing the hysterical left whine about when they're not too busy calling anyone who doesn't agree with them a bigot. Yes. Quite. In spite of my high level of education, and my husband's, we both "get it" in a way that many with similar backgrounds don't seem to. Perhaps we still feel a connect to those of our families who were at the runt end of society only two generations ago. Perhaps we understand better the effect of "arrogant, incompetent Brussels institutions, and the decades when governments neglected inequality".

Purves does not skim over actual racism at all, but she says quite rightly that the vast majority of people are not racists or xenophobes. She's right.

Thank you, Libby Purves.

Given the fact that they are such a tiny minority, it does seem to have created a lot if hot air on here. Bit pointless really.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 27-Jun-16 21:21:26

I don't care what they said. But I suppose Libby Purvess would.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 27-Jun-16 21:19:25

It's quite an elitist article isn't it? Just running down "cultured" people. hmm I don't see the point in it. I suppose that's why it's in the Times. Perhaps that's the newspaper of choice for those people.

granjura Mon 27-Jun-16 21:12:07

So agree about coffee- good coffee, black, no sugar. Thanks.

Jalima Mon 27-Jun-16 21:11:28

JCB cut 500 jobs last year
One of those made redundant was my DN, who has a young family.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 27-Jun-16 21:09:32

I can't think of anything worse than caramel latte. Leave coffee alone.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 27-Jun-16 21:08:04

It is what she calls the "culterati" that she is crticising. "directors, actors, critics, cultural titans, intelligent lefties." I don't actually know any of those people. Have they been more vicious in laying down the blame than the rest of us then? confused

thatbags Mon 27-Jun-16 21:06:35

That is certainly a view shared by quite a few, varian. Cameron's handling of the his own party euro-sceptic agitators, of calling the referendum when he did and then of copping out of finishing the job when the vote went to Brexit (though I can also understand his saying that he is not the right man to do it) do make it look as though it could have been better 'stage managed'. But who knows, and anyway it's done. Now we're at the point where politicians should get down to work and sort things out while the rest of us yabber on and, in effect, wait and see what the fall out is.

Re racist attacks, yes they are as shocking as they always are, and as pointless.

thatbags Mon 27-Jun-16 20:58:36

Yes, I was quoting the article, alea, as anyone would know who'd read it rather than getting hysterical at the title (which is also cobbled from Libby Purves' own expressions in the article, as is fairly standard practice when recommending an article by someone else) and at the person who provided the link to the article.

Jalima Mon 27-Jun-16 20:57:54

daphnedill - I am afraid that I am not quite sure what it is that you are trying to say.

Ah well! C'est la vie! You probably wouldn't understand anyway.

Daphnedil why do you think that Luckygirl would not understand you? Is it because your thought processes are incomprehensible except to yourself?

varian Mon 27-Jun-16 20:57:49

cikada it should have been left to the politicians in the first place and never have been put to such an ill concieved and badly organised referendum

Been out this afternoon. - French lessons in case we still need to do a language test if we wish to take French citizenship!!!

Obie yes Tata is owned by a very good and big Indian Company who have pumped millions into the UK. . The fact they are Indian has no bearing on the fact about British industry - they have invested in the country and that is what counts surely - where they come from is immaterial. Unfortunately many of the Britush companies have invested elsewhere in the world where labour is so much cheaper.
Tata also have a big investment in the British car industry - hope they do not pull out of that too!

It is the racism which I find upsetting - it has been unleashed and for years people who have kept a low profile as far as this is concerned seem to think it is now OK to let their feelings out. It must be terrible for the people who were born in UK or lived within it for years to suddenly become the subject of this abuse.
I do not think it was the intention of the Brexit camp to incite this hatred by their campaign but they did focus on what they saw as being a good point of fear amongst the population and they have to take the blame for this result. It has tarnished the way in which they got a sort of majority opinion the referendum - but as another poster said it was not a majority of the people who voted that way but less than 40%.

The EU have made it quite clear again today that we will be totally out of the EU exactly two years after the clause 50 is started. It has also been reiterated that there will be no free trade agreement with Boris unless he remains in the club.

I used to prefer cappucino, but I'm deffo a latte drinker now. Not at home where I just drink cafetièred coffee with cold milk added, but when out and about. Have you tried caramel latte, anyone? Great for an energy pickmeup though with thousands of calories no doubt (which is why it's an energy pickmeup; funny, that).

Alea Mon 27-Jun-16 20:52:53

I have to admit I have not ploughed through all 10'pages of this thread. Who would have thought there was so much to say? Particularly as there is no shortage of other News and Politics threads, temperate or otherwise.
But I just wanted to say that of all of us, Elegran consistently chooses her words carefully, and her contributions are typically measured and courteous.
I also believe thatbags merely quoted the author of the article, so why the objection?
TBH were I to have judged the thread by mere skim reading, I might have taken offence on the part of others, but reading it carefully, I believe Libby Purves knows of what she speaks and is entitled to express her opinion. The "luvvies" are in any case better able to withstand criticism and to stand up for themselves than many of our generation who are being castigated and threatened with being thrown on the rubbish heap by the youngsters.
#blameCameronandnotyourGran.

cikada Mon 27-Jun-16 20:51:05

Fine, it has happened, no what I would have wanted, but why does this thread get so vicious, why can we not leave this to the politicians, they're so much better qualified. If people are upset because of Brexit, they have every right, the Leavers would certainly cry into their "lattes" as well had the outcome be a different one. Let's just hope the repercussions are not going to be too severe and let's support each other rather than throw insults about.

thatbags Mon 27-Jun-16 20:51:01

Spot on, Elegran @ Mon 27-Jun-16 18:25:54

Jalima Mon 27-Jun-16 20:50:22

"Hysterical left weeping into their lattes
I am not left, I am not weeping but I do drink latte (fills the gap between breakfast and lunch. And I did vote Remain after much wavering.
Or should I call lunch 'dinner' as I am not of the elite hmm

I think the article's funny, nonio – in a slightly wicked way, admittedly, but wicked as in mischievous but not nasty way and a trying to make people think way. Some of the examples of the reactions to the referendum result that Libby Purves gives in her article do appear a bit hysterical, and that's only a very few.

What she says about the hysterics, what Peter Tatchell says, what Chesterton said, and what Purves says towards the end about the disgusting campaigning of Farage are all good things to say said well.

So you don't like it and I do. Shrug.

rosesarered Mon 27-Jun-16 20:44:44

That was to Nonio's post.

rosesarered Mon 27-Jun-16 20:43:59

Good grief!

petra Mon 27-Jun-16 20:38:48

Nonio So because you object to the tone of some of our posts, we must moderate them to suit your tastes? You must have read a couple before you started posting.
If they offended you so much why did you join in.

Nonio Mon 27-Jun-16 20:31:45

Thanks Jiinglebells.

Here is the information (see end of post) for anyone else who is utterly disnechanted with Gransnet following this thread and wants to de-register. MAGGIEMAYBE. I don't suppose you wanted to cause pain. You do not have to be personally insulting...all you have to do is fertilise the ground of others who are insulting, humiliating and make unwarranted personal comments for them to flourish under the mistaken title of "robust" (I would say divisive and unhelpful) debate.

I have tried so hard today to make it more factual and more constructive but I have failed (again).

Plenty of crying in my coffee today. Cheerio to those that have remained polite and factual regardless of your views. A glimmer of light in a rather dark landscape.
