New thread folks!

Helps keep track of new cabinet and her early days. Will be interesting.

Gracesgran Wed 14-Sept-16 10:23:46

Back to TM. Having seen a little of the dictator in her now she is in power I was interested to read this. Theresa May’s incompetence is creating an opposition within her own party

If it was me I would just put up with whoever replaces DC as it is such a lovely area!! Does DC live in the constituency?

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 23:20:36

On the other hand, you could just move!

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 23:19:10

There was a member of the NHA who stood against him in 2015, dramatictessa. I wonder if he'll do it again.
He has family in the constituency, and is a cancer specialist at Middlesborough hospital.

dramatictessa Mon 12-Sept-16 23:16:36

DC is my MP. My friends and I have a mantra whenever anyone from outside Witney mentions this fact - 'It's not my fault!'. It will be interesting to see who they foist on us next. You could pin a blue rosette in a dead donkey and it would be elected round here - mind you, that might be preferable to all the past incumbents.

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 23:16:09

I said that to a head I worked for once, Tegan. As I was leaving, and I had another job to go to! He had been playing the NAS and NUT unions off against each other.

Tegan Mon 12-Sept-16 23:02:54

Creates the worst crisis in this country since the Iraq war and now runs off to a life of nice holidays and well paid after dinner speeches. What a slimebag he is. For many years I regarded Cameron the way I did John Major in that I found it impossible not to like him. But not any more angry.Don't know how he can sleep at night....

Gracesgran Mon 12-Sept-16 23:00:09

The comment was made that this was not because of his opposition to May's plans for Grammar Schools but didn't the relevant Green Paper come out today?

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 19:33:16

Just seen that Cameron is standing down and there will be a by-election in Witney.
Just after May's support for grammar schools, too.

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 19:24:38

Looking forward to that, Jess.
As part of the boundary reforms?
Apparently the seats are based on figures pre the referendum. However, two million more people signed up for the referendum. That's the equivalent of 26 seats.
Osborne's seat will disappear!

JessM Mon 12-Sept-16 18:50:24

OMG that is awful. But hey, jen, we're all in this together so we expect to see a few homeless ex-cabinet members on the streets in the near future.

durhamjen Mon 12-Sept-16 18:24:53

Jess, about sheltered accommodation. It will disappear in 2018, according to Joe Halewood.

durhamjen Sun 11-Sept-16 14:27:34

Joe Halewood has been saying that for a while, Jess. He thinks all sheltered accommodation, including for pensioners, will have to close if the government's pledges stay as they are.

speye.wordpress.com/2016/01/26/the-death-of-supported-and-sheltered-housing-for-dummies/

JessM Sun 11-Sept-16 13:52:39

The other thing that the Tories have done that puts refuges under threat is to put caps on housing benefit. Refuges are totally reliant on housing benefit paid to their residents to keep going. Without it, nearly all will close. The Tories have put this question on hold, rather than saying that they won't go ahead with this. I assume this will affect people in other types of hostels and sheltered accommodation as well.

At the moment sections of the A16 motorway leading into the Tunnel and then the port of Calais - and you can go further to Dunkirk - are being blocked with trees etc at night by the people smugglers. They are threatening the lorry and car drivers. There are it seems police who do patrol that section but only with limited success as these traffickers melt away in to bushes and darkness at the first sign of any. I think that from what I have read the idea of the wall is not to completely stop the migrants from boarding lorries etc - which would almost impossible to do - but to make the road safer by making it much more difficult to block the carriageway with trees etc.

At PMQs on Wednesday, Theresa May said the government had a very good record on domestic violence.
This is her record.

Fox obviously has not grasped what it means to be part of the cabinet and thinks it is still OK to shoot his mouth off. It's Tory supporter's (and in some cases members and donators) that he was slagging off. And since when have any businesses thought about their patriotic duty when developing their business strategy. Small business owners (the ones who might, just might, be lucky enough to be able to take time off for golf) have a duty only to themselves and their families, and to pay their taxes and obey the law. Directors of larger companies have a duty to shareholders to maximise value of their investment. Attempts to make headway in foreign markets might be deemed far too risky. Also managers in medium and large businesses all seem to be working like dogs not being lazy at all.
It would seem that Fox has not grasped these basics.
I wonder how long it takes Johnson to make a gaffe. I am finding it strangely fascinating watching him trying to be serious and dignified. It's a bit like watching a small (and rather wayward) child on their best behaviour at a wedding or similar with the sure and certain knowledge that they are trying really, really hard to be good. But it can't last.

A history of walls, and whether the Calais wall will do any good.

Fox has blown any idea of being a diplomat now.

Gracesgran Sat 10-Sept-16 15:20:40

The cover story in The New Statesman is The "Three Brexiteers" sub-headed "Does anyone know what Brexit mean" and gives an insight into how the three differ. It's is long and detailed and will certainly tell me more than I have known about these three who have really registered very little other than to be annoyed by Boris's buffoonery, remembering Fox's resignation and, with no real evidence I admit, finding Davis rather shallow.

It does say:

Fox asked to have "economic diplomacy" moved to his department in a "rational restructuring". He had a point. He has no responsibility for securing Brexit - that lies squarely in Davis's department - but until it is accomplished he cannot usurp the EU and make definitive trading arrangements with other nations. he can, however, hold preparatory talks with his American friends and others (he has just visited India) That does create an overlap of economic diplomacy, so one presumes the arguments between Fox and Johnson have only just begun. Fox claimed his acquisition of these powers was "crucial to the delivery of objectives I have been set by the Prime Minister.

May slapped him down, to the amusement of Johnson partisans, but Johnson had to second some officials to Fox's department

The article is here

Tegan Sat 10-Sept-16 13:24:38

Yes; just blame the businessmen who, in general, advised against brexit. Have we stopped blaming 'experts' yet, by the way? I'm going to start a 'book' on who will be the next group of people to blame.

durhamjen Sat 10-Sept-16 12:21:12

I thought that was brilliant of Fox, gracesgran, such a confident display of ill manners.
How to make himself look an idiot and lose the support of his party, and of businessmen at the same time.
Number 10 says that is just his personal view.
Soon they'll find an excuse to get rid of him.

Gracesgran Sat 10-Sept-16 09:58:10

So, according to Dr Fox, if we cannot get back to where we are currently with our exports when we 'leave' it will not be the fault of the lying b*******s who misled half the population but the fault of the business men who, having done ok so far, are now not doing their duty because they are lazy and want to play golf on Friday afternoon. What a government and yes, I blame Cameron and the rest of them for not stopping him and doing the duty they had been elected to do.

JessM Sat 10-Sept-16 08:20:12

Yes quite jen but the buck stops. Didn't learn from nearly losing the argument in Scotland but what the heck.
Well on the bright side Brexit will be a job creation scheme for those who wish to work in border control and immigration. And the automatic passport machines at airports seem to be working a bit better than they were...
The machines are still not as good as the ones in Australia and NZ though. They have self-check in in NZ - scan your passport, print your boarding card, print your luggage tags, get the sticky luggage tag in a total snarl, (at which point you can call for help, just like in the supermarket) and then just drop off your bag. Security at the gate. But then the numbers that go through UK airports are much higher and airports far more crowded so maybe it wouldn't work here... Can you imagine the disruption of re-desiginng the whole terminal while keeping going? I think we'll settle for queues here.

durhamjen Fri 09-Sept-16 23:21:09

Cameron wasn't the only bungling fool.
I hope Theresa May can explain this in a positive way for Brexiteers.
