As you say, how did unaccompanied children get there. How for that matter did any of the refugees get to Calais? I don't imagine that they walked from Greece or where ever!!! A network of transport? Why did they not claim asylum in the first safe country they reached? Why is the UK so attractive, particularly with such a wicked government?!

Is Mrs May/Conservative Party responsible for the sea surrounding the UK?!!! Will Mr Corbyn fill it all in if or when he gets to power?!! answers on a post card please!!! (sorry for the tongue in cheek comments)

Where are these so called vulnerable children's parents, if they are so vulnerable how did they manage to get all the way to Calais by themselves. A lots of the jungle residents (I am not saying all the children) looks very undesirable to me and I certainly don't want them here, they should be accessed by the French and sent back home to their own country.

FGS dj, all I'm saying is that these children are on French soil, and in a camp run by the French. Surely it is incumbent upon them to protect vulnerable children until such time as their families can be located and verified.

The children there are trying to get to Britain, and have the right to be here. The government is trying all sorts of ways to stop them coming here, including blaming the French, aided and abetted by the Brexiteers.

Niggly, according to Eurostat figures, France had 70,000+ applicants for asylum and we had 38,000+ in 2015, and France accepts more asylum seekers than we do, so how come you accuse the French of not taking responsibility? Where do you get your information from?

This isn't said by the Canary, but by the Institute for Race Relations, and it's the fault of the Home Office, which has been run by Theresa May for years.

So it's fine for the French not to take any responsibility for vulnerable children even on a temporary basis, and ok to shrug their shoulders and leave them to ???! What a weird attitude!! Imagine the outcry, quite properly, if this situation was outside Dover?! 'Nothing to do with us? Someone else's fault, Shrug!!' I don't think so!! I think we would provide some sort of protection from God knows who until a permanent solution could be found on both sides of the channel! But, hey ho, the French are completely exonerated for turning a blind eye! What a strange train of thought that is dj!

As I said, which you ignored, it's easy for Brits to pretend it's the fault of the French. We have a channel or the North Sea between us and mainland Europe, where these refugees are.
We signed an agreement which said we would take children who had family here. We haven't even done that.
I am ashamed of the attitude of people in this country who say it's not our fault if they go through France first. It's a ridiculous cop-out.

No one on here has said anything about absolving us from responsibility. What has been said is that it is surely the responsibility initially of the French, (as these children are on their territory) to make sure that they are in a place of safety until their future can be resolved in collaboration with the UK. Nothing heartless in that!

I'm with you, Jess, ashamed of the way we treat refugees.
On the news today the French are talking about closing the Jungle again.

It's easy for those in this country to criticise mainland European countries for not doing the right thing, because we are not an easy country to get to overland.
It doesn't absolve us from any responsibility.

Jess - point taken re any DGS of mine but I was merely quoting what I heard on Today. As for Germany, compassionate though they may be, politically Mutti Merkel has much opposition to her open door policy and things do not look good for her in the coming election.

Germany?!!! I think you'll find they're regretting at leisure their somewhat chaotic immigration policy! This year we're seeing a more circumspect attitude all over Europe and less open door!!! As has been previously stated, a lot of these 'children' turn out to be older than we're led to believe and after a while simply disappear. The initial responsibility lies with France to make sure that these youngsters are in a place of safety until a permanent arrangement can be sorted out in collaboration with the UK.

Oh dear nottoold - "avoiding the draft" is an interesting way of spinning "being bullied into fighting in a civil war" or even "being bullied into fighting for ISIL/DEASH.
If it was a 16 year old grandson you want him stuck in a dangerous refugee camp in Calais? Or, as things are going, on the streets of Calais with hundreds of migrant men, at risk of all kinds of crime.
It is clear that the government are dragging their feet deliberately and being incredibly mean and uncharitable about taking refugees from this conflict. Makes me ashamed of my country.

Interesting interview with a foster carer who looked after refugee children. She did point out, what many people suspect, that most of them were older male teenagers, some of whom said they were 15, but obviously weren't, many of them disappeared after a couple of weeks to join their friends elsewhere in the country. Maybe if we offered to take all the girls, who are most vulnerable, we would find there weren't many.

Sorry,I made a little mistake, but whether they should come under the Dubs arrangement or because they have family here is immaterial. They have a right to come here, but never mind, much better to quibble about the details than let them come.
