Are Gransnetters just vicious online trolls?

Well, we are apparently a bunch of bullies on this site:

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3689188/The-vicious-online-trolls-grannies-according-fellow-gran-crossed-unleashed-spite.html

Some poor innocent (who is media savvy enough to get an article published in a national newspaper) is in a state of shock after posting on Gransnet. A whole page in DM basically complaining that she posted on an internet forum and is shocked that not everyone found her as witty and amusing as she clearly thinks she is.

Shame on you grannies for upsetting the poor little flower! On the bright side though, she did manage to get her article published, so that was probably a nice little earner for her.grin

jings has always been a bit of a GN sleb. Long may it last.

merlotgran Fri 15-Jul-16 21:49:36

Well said, Maggie

DaphneBroon Fri 15-Jul-16 21:50:30

My apologies Jingl - it wasn't you just some of the others but how the thread has morphed into this I can't quite follow.
Sincerely sorry to hear about all your current woes, I do hope you get your break and if you can get to Nice, there is no need to feel guilty, as I said the local hotels and restaurants stand to lose their livelihoods if the tourists shun them.

Not sure about your sackcloth and ashes comment though maggiemaybe -fiddling while Rome burns springs to mind, but each to his or her own.

On another board we had a thread called the Norty Step to chat on after some of us kept getting told off on other threads. It ended up being where posters came to get away from the vitriol elsewhere on the board. It was a good laugh on the Norty Step. grin

Well, Daphne, there are quite a few light-hearted threads on here that need a stern warning then. I was chuckling earlier this evening about your quip re George Osborne wearing Galen's pearls, for instance.

Lead on, Wilma.

jings flowers ((huggs)) you're always so chirpy we don't often thin of you being down.

Crafting Fri 15-Jul-16 22:23:41

Or think even.

madamecholet Fri 15-Jul-16 22:32:16

Daphne I certainly didn’t intend to be disrespectful to the victims of the terrible attack by posting lighthearted comments on this thread and I am sorry if that is how it appeared to you. Nothing we say on here will make the slightest different to the unimaginable hurt which must be felt by the victims and their families, but no amount of sympathy from us can begin to ease their pain. I heard on the news this morning that some of the injured children have no parents to comfort them, as their parents cannot be located, so are presumably among the victims themselves, and I can’t get the image of hurt, terrified children alone with strangers (however kind they may be) wondering why their parents are not coming to get them, out of my mind. However, the object of terrorism is to commit unpredictable acts of such obscene cruelty that they eventually break our spirit, so I think it is important for us to carry on as normal, however sad we may feel.

Galen Fri 15-Jul-16 22:36:03

Hear, hear!

harrigran Fri 15-Jul-16 23:11:10

A few days of lost tourism is not going to cripple Nice, it is a very expensive place to stay. All the Oligarchs on their yachts will still be moored and spending money like water. Tourists need to fly into Nice airport to reach certain parts of Provence too.

DaphneBroon Fri 15-Jul-16 23:12:03

Could we have less of an overreaction please?
All I said was, I thought this thread was about something entirely different.
I thought the reference to "sackcloth and ashes" was OTT but maybe I should retract that and just leave those who want to talk about threads/cliques/conspiracies or whatever to it.

DaphneBroon Fri 15-Jul-16 23:14:22

Meant to add, I have raised no objection to light hearted threads so please don't make me out to be a total killjoy.
Oh s*d it, I'll just go and eat worms or something it has to be less challenging than being shot down in flames at every turn.

madamecholet Fri 15-Jul-16 23:40:29

Apologies, Daphne, I see now you didn’t make the original comment re the events in France. Please don’t go and eat worms – I’m already heading for the norty step!

celebgran Fri 15-Jul-16 23:43:16

Totally unsurprised as some ie madamecholet to name but one too tired to think of more seem to enjoy posting nasty put downs whatever floats your boat I guess.

Seem to remember yourself and Katek posting extremely ill informed unecessary posts on the only thread I actually go on which admin had to remind people is a support thread to actually make people feel better not worse

Sorry can't remember other culprits

I read article while away and was as said unsuprised not first mention of then forum in the papers either sadly not in good way.

celebgran Fri 15-Jul-16 23:44:28

How any normal person could joke about happenings in nice is incomprehensible

DaphneBroon Sat 16-Jul-16 00:08:23

Apology accepted madamecholet I will admit to be surprised at the broadside when I was not aware of complaining about lighthearted threads.
maggiemaybe seems to have interpreted my comments as such however, tant pis.
I still find this thread is in danger of going round and round in ever decreasing circles until like the jujub bird it flies up its own fundament. Conspiracies? Round robins? Threads about threads? Ganging up? Who on earth is taking online life so seriously? (When there is more than enough to worry about in RL)
hmm

madamecholet Sat 16-Jul-16 00:12:18

Celebgran you are entitled to your opinion and I am not getting into a war of words with you, except to point out that if my posts were against the rules of the site, they would have been removed – as several of your posts were. If you are unhappy about that, it is a matter for you to take up with the moderators.

DaphneBroon Sat 16-Jul-16 08:53:46

rosesarered Sat 16-Jul-16 08:56:11

Just looked in........whaaat? A surreal thread if ever there was one!

rosesarered Sat 16-Jul-16 08:57:15

Accusations, broadsides, huffs, puffs, and now worms.

MiniMouse Sat 16-Jul-16 08:57:43

It's what we do best roses wink

celebgran Sat 16-Jul-16 08:59:00

Maybe yours weren't cholet but several were which does seem Rather sad on a support group.

As said whatever floats your boat there are a hardcore of rather nasty posters on gransnet i think mumsy said they wouldn't be so brave if not anonymous the reasons given by the psychologist in mail were rather good I felt,
