Brexit watch, round 2

As I said before there have been far more checks at the French border in Dover over the last year at least. There has also been increased security at the French borders in France at the other ports and times when it has taken ages to get through UK border control at Portsmouth. All due to increased security I am sure.
What is clear is that there were not enough staff at the French border in Dover yesterday.
I really think it is far more likely to be because they are stretched by the terrorist situation rather than anything else. Obviously none of us knows for sure and it seems wrong to speculate.
I do know that a lot of reservists have been called up to support the local gendarmes at the holiday resorts here.
We live in difficult times.

Unfortunately the French don't have a sense of humour and wouldn't understand how hilariously petty their behaviour is. They are putting this down to security. That's rich coming from a country who's police force didn't notice that a Lorry wasn't refrigerated when the driver told them he was delivering ice cream ( the Nice atrocity)
They share a border with 5 countries. Are they going to bring the whole of Europe to a standstill?
It's almost worthy of a TV comedy sketch.

Some of you seem to forget that the Lorry drivers are more than used to these accurances thanks to the migrant camp at Calais.

Well, Perhaps checking everything is what they feel they need to do, after all who knows who or what could slip in posing as happy holiday makers? particularly with so many flooding in, ditto haulage!! Two dreadful terrorist attacks in short order, would make any country pay a little more attention to detail!

If say the French are, as you say granjura, deliberately being difficult at border control, then I would assume that people will vote with their feet and cars at some point, and not spend time and money in France.

If on the other hand, the delays are genuine, and there is greater security, bring it on.

I must point out to you durhamjen that it isn't us protecting our border, it is the French protecting * their* border. You really must get out more.

AGain- no need for University qualifications in Economics to come to that comclusion. They could decide to check every box, every animal, every everything.... as is their right. As allies they choose not to- if we *iss them off- they will change tactics. Inescapable fact - nothing to do with intellect either! And that at every border- not just Channel Ports.

The remain lady that I spoke to in Yorkshire post referendum said she worked for a haulage company and that people didn't seem to realise how complicated/costly it would be if we left the EU.

Sorry, but no one needed a Degree or to be a brain surgeon to realise borders would be severely affected- however you voted- and be it tourist, or importer/exporter.

It couldn't have escaped anyone- with or without GCSE, A'Level, Degree or PhD in geography that the UK is an Island - nothing to do with intellect or qualifications. Fact- inescapable.

I am just stating the facts. Surely Brexiteers didn't think that border controls wouldn't affect them? How do you suggest that border guards differentiate between the Brits and the others? Take them at their word? That's no control at all.

What is happening now is just a rehearsal for the border controls of Brexit.
It is what people voted for, isn't it? Border controls work both ways. Most terrorist attacks have been homegrown. We do not want to allow any of our terrorists to attack France or the Netherlands, do we? So everyone leaving or entering will have to be checked.

If Trump does become President, I would hate to think that I would gloat over any discomfort his supporters might suffer as a result, it's just unpleasant and putting yourself on the same level as those you purport to consider yourself to be both intellectually and morally superior, which of course you're not!!!

why would it stop beyond Summer? The UK has not even invoked article 50 yet- so years and years of negotiations ahead. This is the French pointing out 'if we don't cooperate you will suffer' and that they are holding the cards. Like it or not- they do.

A few weeks ago, before the referendum, I saw interviews on TV with various officials in Calais and Dunkirk, and they said the townspeople would be glad to get shot of the whole migrant problem on their doorstep.
More or less, let the UK sort it out.

nigglynellie- having talked to French and Swiss customs' officers yesterday- I can assure you it is a mixture of both heightened security and 'let's show them' .... and this not only for Dover.

Not at all Riverwalk- au contraire. Just being realistic - the French and other Europeans are not happy with the situation at all re Brexit- as it is indirectly or directly affecting them all, not just the Brits. I do not condone, but I do understand, their anger and dismay. Just like we all would be seriously affected should Trump become President in the USA- it would have repercussion for us too. With the French and our close neighbours, much more so in practical ways. Many in the queue will be remainers- and many might be friends and relatives - although I do not know of any as such. We've done this long journey to many many times- and I wouldn't wish this on anyone- I have to say.

It is an inescapable fact that, as Islanders- we are totally dependent on the goodwill of others when we want to travel and for imports and exports. Fact.

The only extra security would have been exactly the same whatever the result, it's called being on high alert after two devastating terrorist attacks, or perhaps you are unaware of France's status. Border controls have been reintroduced with other countries as well as ours with good reason, nothing to do with Brexit.

The delay is going to cost our businesses so much money. I bet they are fuming as the haulage companies did not want Brexit, and if this is anything to go by.
