Jalima Some people are having difficulty understanding that the remain camp lost the vote. They failed. They lost. They came second.

"Vote Leave, led by May’s cabinet ministers Johnson, Andrea Leadsom and Priti Patel, had promised the electorate before the EU referendum that voting out would mean a “genuine Australian-style, points-based immigration system” by the time of the next election.

The campaign group said those seeking to move to Britain should be admitted on the basis of their skills, without discrimination on the grounds of nationality, making clear EU citizens should not be given any preferential access to the UK.

Asked about bringing in a points-based immigration system, May said: “A lot of people talk about points-based systems always being the answer in immigration. There is no single silver bullet that is the answer in terms of dealing with immigration.”

When pressed on whether failing to bring in such a system would not respect the reasons people voted for Brexit, May said: “People voted, I think, for control. What they wanted to see was control of the freedom of movement of the European Union countries into the United Kingdom.”

MPs are to debate the possibility of a further referendum! shock Imagine going through that again. Looking back what a lot of nonsense issued forth from all mps. Smacked bums all around imo.

If the rest of the EU wants to stay together, the UK will not be able to make separate deals with each EU country. It can only do that if the rest of the EU splits up.
It will still have to accept free movement of people within the rest of the EU if it wants free trade.

Lawyers are going to make a lot of money arguing about whether Brexit is inevitable.

What Obama said was that ^""First things first - the first task (for Britain) is going to be figuring out what Brexit means with respect to Europe, and our first task is making sure we get, first, TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) done and also that we move forward on the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) negotiations in which we've invested a lot of time and effort."

It is not all "pro-UK" or "anti-UK" What he said does not necessarily mean that the US will prefer to trade with the EU than with the UK (as your "put the EU in front of the UK in exports" and "anti-UK" imply), but that they will get the other pending deals in place first - just as we have always know that the Uk needs to get her deal with the EU in place before other countries. Well, those of us do who watched the much-discussed video before the referendum vote.

It makes sense for any country to finalise the deals it has in the pipeline before starting on another whose details may be influenced by events in the near future.

I still don't see the connection between a UK/US deal when the UK is out of the EU, and the UK doing separate deals with all/each EU country after they have left.

JessM Mon 05-Sept-16 09:11:35

And there are all sorts of likely countries keen for a trade deal - well Australia anyway. Trouble is it is so far away and costs of exporting tangible goods is inevitably very high. They already have a lot of established trade links with the far east, which is relatively on their doorstep...
Still it would be cheaper for the expats to buy things like Marmite and Jammy Dodgers...

Immigration!

whitewave Mon 05-Sept-16 09:08:25

Brexit was won to a large extent on the "promise" of a huge drop in migration and the resultant savings from our membership benefiting the NHS.
A question of legitimacy arises if this "promise" is dropped at the first opportunity.

See the Japanese have sent a 15 page memo to the British Government outlining what they see as essential if they are not to considering abandoning Britain for the EU.

It basically wants the status quo as far as I can see.

The worry for the British Government that the ROW will see this memo as the benchmark.

Be interested to see what Davis says today. Hopefully more than platitudes like " a bright and exciting future" etc.
The problem as far as I can see is that the cabinet doesn't agree. May as someone said above has already rubbished the points system and the extra cash for the NHS - things that were extolled by Johnson et al

Gracesgran Mon 05-Sept-16 08:22:58

I agree with 'why the surprise' Ness but would turn it around and ask 'who the heck did the leavers think they were to offer things they had no way of following through!' Of course, we will now hear from leavers that these were only suggestions.

JessM Mon 05-Sept-16 07:47:42

Surprise in the press today that May is not guaranteeing the "pledges" made by the "Leave" campaigners. It was clear during the campaign that the Tory party as the government in power was not backing the Leave campaign and that the leave campaigners might not be able to deliver all the extravagant "Promises" or "pledges" they were making.
So why the surprise?

durhamjen Mon 05-Sept-16 00:30:07

Yes, daphne. I think saying 'simple people who are easily brainwashed' is much more derogatory.
It seems to imply that all Brexiteers are simple people.

durhamjen Mon 05-Sept-16 00:26:51

Yes, very helpful, isn't she?
Just shows she does not want to take control.

daphnedill Mon 05-Sept-16 00:08:34

Well, that's all very clear (as mud). hmm

Gracesgran Mon 05-Sept-16 00:05:29

According to Mrs M apparently she has decided that Brexit means some sort of limit on EU migrants but it doesn't mean a points-based system because it wouldn't want work.

durhamjen Mon 05-Sept-16 00:03:25

Perhaps if he brought the factory over here, he would be let off. He owns more land than the queen, so it wouldn't be a problem.
The pool is underneath his grade 1 listed building, so he must have known how strict the planning is for that.

daphnedill Mon 05-Sept-16 00:03:16

I don't understand the comment about British being a derogatory term. Why should it be?

durhamjen Sun 04-Sept-16 23:59:22

Tegan, Dyson might want to go and live in Malaysia with his workforce. He has built a swimming pool for over a million pounds under his mansion without permission.
He could go to prison for it.
Someone else who thinks laws are for the plebs and not those as important as he is.

durhamjen Sun 04-Sept-16 23:55:54

Brexit means British exit, so why is it derogatory?
It was only the British who had a vote.

Cherrytree59 Sun 04-Sept-16 23:48:35

Just wondering...
if the word British is now considered a derogatory term

Just simple people who are easily brainwashed

daphnedill Sun 04-Sept-16 23:34:46

@Ana

So you'd rather let politicians be in control?

Everybody has a right to an input into government policy, however they voted in the referendum. That's what democracy is really all about.

durhamjen Sun 04-Sept-16 23:31:07

So all those EU migrants here who have been working here for years need to just hang in there and wait and see if Theresa May decides to kick them out, and send them to Yarl's Wood after a knock on the door.
Nothing to worry about, really.
She'll need a few more border guards for all the families to be deported, so that'll be okay a lot more jobs for the British.

No, Ana, how many times were the British public brainwashed into believing they were going to take control? Particularly in the last TV interviews. All the Brexiteers said it. Remain campaign most certainly never used that phrase.

Ana Sun 04-Sept-16 22:30:43

But it's those who voted Remain who seem to be wanting to take control and are very frustrated because they can't! grin

daphnedill Sun 04-Sept-16 22:28:19

Ah, but Ana, I thought people wanted to take back control. You can't control anything without some kind of anticipation and awareness.

'Waiting and seeing' is a certain way of not being in control.

Ana Sun 04-Sept-16 22:22:10

Wait and see what happens, like the rest of us.

How do you know it's going to be a problem for you until it does happen?
