Brexit watch, round 2

Whitewave...I voted 'No' in the 70,s and 'Out' in June.I would love not to be part of the EU,but already begin to wonder if we will end up with a one foot in/one foot out situation to appease everyone.
Juncker/Hollande wants to expand the EU with fuller integration.
Merkel is anti expansion and in favour of reforming the current EU.
No one can deny that the Brexit vote has caused the whole of the EU to take stock of itself which was way overdue.
My gut feeling,is that we will end up with a semi independent,sovereign UK,and other EU countries will too.

I agree granny2016, it'll be a compromise for sure, which is perhaps what it should be! I voted along with DH and DP's to join the Common Market, a trading greement, and had it stayed just that, I would certainly have voted to remain; but it didn't and over the last 10/15 years I have become more and more uneasy at what this country was very slowly being absorbed into without any of us realising it, until one morning we'd wake up, but by that time it would have been too late and we would have had no choice but to follow where our masters in Brussels led us. As you say G2016, if nothing else the EU has had and will have a well overdue shakeup, as most things need after 40 years without a review!

I wouldn't worry about what Hollande wants Granny2016 (though I am not sure he does want expansion). He won't be there much longer.

The question really though is EEA or WTO. The latter sounds like economic suicide to me.

We could have been involved in the shake up rather than lighting a fuse that could result in heaven knows what.

We could,t shake it Tegan,that,s why the referendum went ahead.The UK was told that there was no more leeway.
Cameron had assured Juncker that he believed he could achieve a 60/40 split in favour of a remain vote,so the result was not anticipated.

Without the vote in favour of Leave,the EU would have carried on with business as normal and its quest for further integration.

My money is on Juppé, but we shall see!

We voted for the same reason ,as I am sure many others did.
The EU was the dream of a few which was beginning to turn into a nightmare.
You say 'absorbed',I felt l was being 'sucked in' and voted to put the brakes on.

How did you feel you were being sucked in? Please could you give some concrete examples. I honestly have never felt like that at all.

I was being polite G2016!!! bit like a quicksand, fine and benign on the surface and at a distance, but a step too far, and whoosh you suddenly being dragged under with no hope of escape!
We had would never have been able to influence any changes from within, D.C. was virtually laughed at for suggesting it!,any attempts would have been treated with the same contempt, that was quite obvious, and business as usual with Junker in the driving seat. No thank you!

I thought that the UK had an opt out clause from greater Union. So there is never any question of being sucked in. That was another Brexit lie.

This is the sort of comment I just don't understand. I, and most people I know, knew very well what was going on, and liked it. Europe is not 'foreign', it is a place where a great number of British people work, live and visit. We were a part of it. There are no 'masters' in Brussels, there is a Europe-wide government in which all members, including us, took part. True, we couldn't always get our own way, but neither could any one of us in the Westminster parliament.
Now it has been torn apart, we have lost all the advantages we had of being part of a bigger thing than one little country. Which is all we have been since we lost the Empire (and I'm not old enough to remember those days).
I am really scared as to what will happen next with Davis, Fox & Johnson playing even more games. :-(

Well we did, like the euro, but let's face it get out clauses can easily be revoked particularly when put under pressure. Everything about that organisation is highly suspect and can only get more a autocratic and domineering.

But can you give any specific examples, because I really don't understand this 'sucked in' thing?

No nig they are written into the Treaties and can't get revoked without our say so.

And no I doubt very much that autocratic and domineering will be the way forward. Yes undoubtedly the EU has indicated closer union, but this is not going down well with the voters, and Brussells is indicating that closer union is not an option that is being followed as there is only at best a Luke warm feeling by other members.

There is a world out there apart from the EU. This country has become totally introverted polarised and frightened of doing anything for itself thanks to years of being run by Brussels, like hanging onto Nurse! Nothing to do with the Empire, even I can't remember that, but I can remember having a sense of pride in this country before the unelected bureaucrats took over our lives.

Opt-outs from the euro and Schengen were huge. There were of times when the UK got what they wanted.
I have never understood the sucked-in stuff either. Examples, please.
I kept asking the question on here, "What do you want to do, that the EU is stopping you doing" amd answer came there none.

I, too, had a sense ofpride in this country and it's peoples. Which only ended @ 4 weeks ago .

When I refer to feeling 'sucked' in,I am not referring to the EU as it currently stands,but future expansion of and further integration into the EU,which is the desire of many within the EU council and others.
I did not warm to post Brexit MEP,s in the European parliament who referred to us all as 'family' !!!
Had the EU now been fully formed,the voting may have been different.
I do not believe it is ,and I believe that if we had stayed in,we would have had little say over future developments.
I was always very comfortable in the EU,and was not prepared to vote for a future within in where I could foresee more integration.

I have never understood the wisdom behind open borders.

I believe that at some point in the future,was there further integration,that the Euro would be the only currency.

But, Granny2016, there was absolutely no guarantee that the UK would have been 'sucked in' at any stage. In all probability, it would not have been and, if there had been major changes, then would have been the time for our Parliament to consult with the electorate. Are you seriously telling me that you voted Leave on the basis of some future fear?

The UK has absolute say over future development which affect us. The EU Council does not make laws, nor can anybody within the EU enforce a major constitutional change.

Do you not see anything positive about leaving the EU? I'm quite aghast that people have voted on something which was unlikely to happen.

It is my sincere hope that the UK rejoins the EU within my lifetime. However, it will not be with the concessions we now have, such as opt outs from Schengen and the Euro.

Still nothing concrete being offered as examples of being 'sucked in' or 'losing our identity' or even 'Taking back control' as per Andrea Leadsom..... trite and meaningless slogans and those who spouted them, knowing it was all a pack of lies are not exactly defending them now are they? Where is your 'taking back control' now? Even Farage has crawled back under his stone.
