See, I took a very different view of Margaret Beckett's comments. I haven't forgotten that it was she who nominated Corbyn, & after he was elected said that if she'd known he'd win she'd never have nominated him. Well it's that kind of morally bankrupt attitude that has contributed to people turning away from the Labour party as it was. She has sown a wind & reaped a whirlwind. I attended my first CLP meeting last week. Two of the old guard (combined membership years totalling something like 300 ;)) tried to shut it down on a point of order. Both Smith supporters. And tried to get the vote done as a secret ballot because of 'fear of troublemakers'. It was done as a show of hands with a resounding win for Corbyn, & was comradely throughout with no nastiness. What struck me was that those who spoke for Smith seemed to be motivated by fear & negativity, & could say little that was positive about their candidate. About threequarters of the meeting were new joiners, & the enthusiasm & passion with which they spoke was inspiring. Yet the old guard, instead of harnessing & using this passion, are afraid of it & want to shut it down. I was able to vote as I'd joined before July 12th. Had the meeting been held the very next day I'd have been barred because of the appeal being won. But I can still vote in the leadership election because I've paid an extra £25 blood money to be a registered supporter. Even peeps with little interest in politics can see how wrong all this is. We live in interesting times.
