The God I always thought I knew would be feeling the pain of Keith Vaz, and his love would be encircling him. I do not think he would be interested in whether Vaz was an MP or not.

How do we know it was only once?!! The first exposure yes, but who knows whether this was a one off or a regular occurrence?! Surely the escort who went to the paper with this tale along with photos is a bit remiss? or perhaps in his eyes KV was just fair game - who knows, money speaks all languages, even the church expect a fiver to go round a cathedral or on the collection plate on Sunday, whatever happened to the widows mite?!!!

Well yes jingle, but presumably if you are very poor you will be frowned upon for being? mean, less than generous, or worse than that- poor. Years ago the collection was in a bag, so what people gave was their business, but with a plate?!!! Of course you can go to a service and look round after, but you've still got that public collection! The widows mite seems obsolete!

Actually, I will find out what happens in churches in our area, see if any of them are stil using a plate.

At my church many people don't put anything in the collection plate, some because they have a standing order and others because they can't afford to. No-one is criticised or frowned upon - all are welcome rich or poor.

Niggly, do the plate collectors ask the congregation to only put a five pound note on the plate or does the priest announce it during the service ?

No, not quite, They do however on occasion encourage people to give generously (the church doesn't miss a trick!)everyone does, usually a lot more than £5! Very few coins these days. No one wants to stand out so everyone gives at least a fiver. Mind you this is High Anglicans, maybe other denominations aren't so direct!!

I attend a high church, seems it's a snob thing among the congregation in your church, a case of she put a fiver so I must. I would most definitely put fifty pence on the plate

Anniebach, I'm just catching up and saw your comment that people on this thread believe KV deserved what happened to him. Maybe I've read comments differently but to clarify, I sympathise with anyone who has a photograph of themselves in a sexual act printed in a newspaper. I don't believe that was either necessary or appropriate. The paper could have printed the allegations and said something like they had evidence but didn't feel it appropriate to put photographic evidence in a daily newspaper.
I'm a bit prudish I think. I don't want to look at photographs (or video's, i.e. porn) of people involved in sexual acts and I'd prefer such images not to appear in the newspapers. I haven't seen the photographs by the way

Iam, I do feel strongly about the photograph , no one deserved that humiliation , troubles me that such a photograph can be published ,seems anything thing goes now, I posted about it because so very few seemed shocked , I certainly was. I don't agree that you are prudish, i don't think I am but there are limits

Re cathedrals: Canterbury charges a tenner to go round, if you go give yourself plenty of time because if you haven't finished by the time they want to hold a service they throw you out. Well, not quite, but quite insistently, even though the service was only in the choir area.

Forgive this comment if it pops up twice - I tried to post it but it just disappeared! So, for the second time...

Regarding the comment that Leicester people are a bit odd if they keep voting for someone they consider a bit sleazy, the answer is that we don't all live in his constituency. My BiL does and has turned to Vaz several times for assistance with various matters. No reason why a person can't be a rogue and also a good constituency MP. I think people's faith in him has been shaken by past financial scandals, though, and I suspect that a sex scandal may be the last straw for some traditional religious voters.
