Jeremy and the future

That's it. Jeremy has won the leadership challenge with an even larger majority. Now can we please get down to opposing the Tories austerity measures that have nearly destroyed all our welfare society.
I don't think he is 'unelectable'! Listening to Radio Somerset this morning (not exactly a Labour area) the majority of callers were delighted. There were a few who quoted the media and seemed to think it was the end of the country, but most were saying they now had something to vote for at last.

I was going to put forward the figures given by migration watch on the percentages of foriegn born. But there's no point. As you were smile

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 22:55:08

@ab

Yes, they are, Annie. The media can't be blamed. They have genuine concerns which need addressing. Personally, I think they can, but giving them a liberal brush off won't work.

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 22:52:31

The pop?

What's that?

Lupin Thu 29-Sept-16 22:49:52

Whatever he promotes or believes in Jeremy Corbyn - to me - comes across as a man driven not leading. He has not - so far - displayed the qualities of leadership in the media, or at the despatch box that are sorely needed. The strategy that has placed him where he is is very clever - but he still seems to be a fish out of water.

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 22:23:01

That was to Ana

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 22:21:52

Oh, I thought you meant - oh never mind!
grin

Anniebach Thu 29-Sept-16 22:21:08

The media cannot be blamed for the views of people in Boston, my daughter lives in Lincolnshire and has told me most areas are anti immigrantion

Ana Thu 29-Sept-16 22:14:41

Yes, I got that Jalima, I was referring to general snippiness and tabloid-bashing.

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 22:06:56

sheeple
Are they people who blindly follow a doctrine or leader?

Good word isn't it (Miranda)

Ana Thu 29-Sept-16 21:55:44

Have you been at the pop, daphnedill? hmm

Anniebach Thu 29-Sept-16 21:55:33

Daphne, how can they openly fight? They will have momentum targeting them if they annoy Corbyn Momentum needs Corbyn so they can control the Labour Party

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 21:46:31

@dj

Nah! They all cross their legs.

People haven't been living longer either.

The number of people emigrating from the UK hasn't decreased significantly either.

Errrmmm...maybe the Daily Mail will publish a headline with 'Six million a lalaland statistic'. No, I don't think so either! They've been getting away with stirring up sheeple's prejudices for decades. Why should they stop now?

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 21:41:42

@petra

Yes, I do have a fair knowledge of what's involved. I know that Easter European immigrants started arriving in 2003 and it's not beyond anyone with a brain bigger than a goldfish to plan for that kind of expansion.

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 21:38:55

@ab

In my very humble opinion, Corbyn and McDonnell are the weak links in the Labour Party. If I were a competent back bencher, I would rise above the childishness and fight for the cause for which I became an MP in the first place.

I hope (fingers crossed) that the competent and talented MPs can rise amongst the ranks and take over.

durhamjen Thu 29-Sept-16 21:15:40

And you think the extra 6 million are all immigrants, do you?
The British don't have children any more?

whitewave Thu 29-Sept-16 20:52:41

And most of that overseen by the Tories. Well I wouldn't have believed it!

Anniebach Thu 29-Sept-16 20:48:27

Daphne, the shadow chancellor doesn't share your opinion of labour back benchers, he called then f*****g losers , hardly very competent are they?

rosesarered Thu 29-Sept-16 20:41:32

? from previous page dd the phrase 'lala land'

petra Thu 29-Sept-16 20:38:07

daphne from what I heard of the speech Corbyn didn't deferentiate between Eu and non eu migrants.
In 2001 our population was approximately 59 mil people
In 2011 ......................................................63..................
In 2015.......................................................65..................
So in 14 years our population has increased by 6 mil people. Nobody ever knew how many were coming. Is it any wonder that the hospitals, schools, housing, is under strain.
You can't just knock up a hospital or a housing estate. This takes planning, and you as an intelligent woman know what is involved.

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 20:36:19

@roses

Pardon?

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 20:35:42

Labour has some very competent back benchers. If they can get over the squabbles, there is the potential for a more competent Cabinet than the Conservatives have. Apparently Seumas Milne is going, so if Labour can present a more professional image without losing their principles (and it's a big 'if'), I'm beginning to believe they have a chance of winning elections.

rosesarered Thu 29-Sept-16 20:07:04

It's a common phrase dd and is regularly applied to Corbyn and pals.

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 20:01:10

Why would it cause resentment? Experienced union negotiators often take the heat out of disputes.

I was a union member for all my working life - first as a member of one of the print unions, then teaching and local government.

Unions do a lot of mediating behind closed doors and provide their members with valuable services, such as counselling, insurance and general advice.

I could never remotely have been described as an agitator, nor could my fellow members.

daphnedill Thu 29-Sept-16 19:55:08

@niggly

You d't lift the lalaland description from the Daily Mail by any chance, did you? I noticed the headline when I was in Tesco yesterday.

Ana Thu 29-Sept-16 19:54:37

German labour laws, including relationships with unions, have been fundamental to the German industrial boom.

Which was my point. Giving UK Unions more powers now is not going to do anything other than cause resentment.
