Brexit and power to the people

Really interesting court case and day 1 of "The Royal Prerogative"

It basically boils down to whether a minister -in this case Amino 1 - can remove rights established by an act of parliament.

It raises questions of "fundamental constitutional importance about the limits of the power of the executive"

Pannick, QC for the challenger, said " this court is not concerned with the political wisdom of withdrawal" "The government was wrong to suggest the legal challenge was merely camouflage to prevent Brexit"

Pannick's client the court was advised had again received threats, abuse and insults.

A further QC - representing the people
Argued" the constitution of our parliamentary democracy, unwritten as it is , is predicated on the sovereignty of parliament and the courts working as arbiter. Notification of withdrawal leads to the removal of the rights of UK citizens.
Chambers QC argued that the referendum did not replace the UK system of parliamentary democracy"
If the government triggered A50 it would be setting itself up as "de facto legislature"
This is a case about what is legally required, not what is legally expedient.

Good ain't it?

Sorry, but you can't. It's still only 25% tax free.
What's gold-plated stock?

Im68Now Mon 14-Nov-16 16:04:25

Took it all out in tax free lump sums re-invested in gold plated stock, We are doing better that all right, Thanks for asking.

granjura Mon 14-Nov-16 15:17:18

yep- indeed sad

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 14:19:09

What do you think is happening to the shares your private pensions are invested in?

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 14:17:42

No staying power, that's your problem.

This is interesting; what will happen to Brexit if Le Pen wins in France next May?

Sorry, lost will to fight, can't win, glad I took out those private pensions. smile

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 13:46:39

This makes sense. Unfortunately the government will not listen.

By a man who fought in that war.

This place is only much poorer for most of us because the top 1% take far more than they should. I'd rather carry on complaining and go for a more equal society.

Im68Now Mon 14-Nov-16 13:34:20

I've got just one word to say Democracy

We've just had remembrance day, that was what it was all about.

We go with the majority of voters, stop complaining get ready to live in a much poorer place.

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 13:03:52

Good enough for me, granjura. Now we just have to persuade Theresa May to have another referendum when we know what to vote on.

granjura Mon 14-Nov-16 11:40:41

'Power to the people' is a very wobbly concept when the figures are so close - Brexiters and Farage said it again and again before the vote, that a 48/52 % just would not be acceptable and would call for a revote.

And now an official BE study has shown that since June the % has been reversed, and that as of 6th of November, it would be 47.95 leave and 52.05 remain. OK the figures have been properly estimated by experts- but do carry a margin of error- but even so- it just shows just how very close it is- and how the concept of 'Power to the people' is just meaningless (even more in the USA where Clinton got more votes).

Categories anaylised for the above were

now dead

voters now over 18 and able to vote now

expats now over 15 years abroad and no longer able to vote

less regretters and switching regretters on both sides

and we end up with

16,729,768 leave and 18,161,215 remain

If anyone would like all the figures, I will type them out.

That's the problem, we never get more in the good times, do we?
I like Marmite on toast but am happy to have Toblerexit.grin

POGS Fri 11-Nov-16 09:19:52

I asked on the 8th

"Will Toblerone, Marmight, Walkers reduce the price or make their products bigger if the pound rises. Hmmm"

The pound has risen and we at least should have 2 pyramids back. Perhaps they could have a 'rates' bag attached to the bar and if the pound goes up or down they could put in how many pyramids make up the loss or gain.

We could of course as consumers have Toblerexit or Marmexit. grin

merlotgran Thu 10-Nov-16 23:11:04

When I was small my older brother told me that the taste of Toblerone was like licking an ashtray so I tried it - the ashtray, not Toblerone. shock

thatbags Thu 10-Nov-16 23:00:37

When I worked in Thailand Toblerone was the only decent chocolate I could get, and only then at the duty free shop on the Malaysian border. I also bought dry martini there. Both had to last me a month. Except they didn't.

If you're dedicated enough you can work out a painless way to eat it ?

Anya Thu 10-Nov-16 22:30:38

It's painful to eat. Why would anyone want to eat chocolate that hurts you?

rosesarered Thu 10-Nov-16 21:52:41

Oh, so I lost my teeth for nothing then?grin

granjura Thu 10-Nov-16 21:51:24

Agreed- we only buy the black version- original far too sweet.
You are supposed to break it up - not bite into it ;)

rosesarered Thu 10-Nov-16 20:15:08

It's oversweet and hard to bite into......I prefer Maltesers.smile

Jalima Thu 10-Nov-16 19:58:42

Or helping us to retain our teeth grin

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 19:55:18

I'd heard it was to make it easier for us weak Brits to break off each triangle, granjura.

POGS Tue 08-Nov-16 12:32:03

I keep reminding people that we have found the pound rate in a similar position in 2008/2009 but we had the bankers to blame then and now some blame Brexit.

Did Toblerone, Walkers, Marmight costs become an issue in 2008/2009 when the pound rates were lower than as of today? I can't remember.

'Pound slips below Euro'
• £20 buys only €18 at UK exchange

I think we as buyers in the UK have been well aware of our 'shrinking' bars of chocolates way before the Referendum result to be honest. I also believe that Store Brands will thrive and eventually the bigger brands will loose revenue because they are passing on the costs of the fall of the pound to the consumer , sometimes raising the cost and making the product smaller.

Will Toblerone, Marmight, Walkers reduce the price or make their products bigger if the pound rises. Hmmm

trisher Tue 08-Nov-16 12:28:57

Oh no I've just thought will Brexit result in higher prices for Belgian and Swiss chocolate? Should I contact Theresa and demand it is written into any agreement that chocolate prices must remain the same? Did the leavers realise this might happen?

granjura Tue 08-Nov-16 11:15:43

Yet another tragic effect of Brexit- first Marmite and then

www.bbc.com/news/uk-37904703

LOL - thank goodness our Toblerones in Switzerland will remain the same smile at last one bit of good news for us x
