What colour car do you have or did you used to drive?

Very interesting article about T May. Forgive me if it's been posted before.
I think that the author is proposing that the Murdoch media have been superseded by the Daily Mail in setting the agenda for 'British' and that Theresa May is a product and perpetrator of its agenda.

The Daily Mail takes power
Anthony Barnett 5 October 2016
After 25 years in politics Theresa May has no obvious connections to any think tank. She shows no interest in ideas. Asked by Conservative Home in a Quick Quiz session to choose between Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” or Louise Bagshawe’s “Desire”, she replied, “I wouldn’t read either of them, sorry.” The prime minister who faces arguably the Kingdom’s deepest constitutional predicament since George III was driven from the Cabinet by the loss of the American colonies dismissed out of hand the idea that she might ever turn to the pages of Burke, even though as a student she had chaired a society named after him.
As the country faces an unprecedented concatenation of economic, strategic, diplomatic and constitutional uncertainty, the woman at the helm seems devoid of intellectual resources. The one decision she has definitely taken is to give the go ahead to Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, a boondoggle incapable of justification by any criteria of integrity. The Pharaohs built their own pyramids, Theodoric built his own mausoleum. But these were designed as monuments to generate the admiration of posterity. Surely only an idiot would make their first decision the go-ahead for a colossal radioactive tombstone to her regime.
But Theresa May should not be dismissed as an idiot. There is a striking and potentially formidable coherence to the general direction she has set for her new government, evidenced by the self-confidence of her ministers who remarkably quickly are singing from the same song-sheet. She does seem to have a clear ideology refreshingly different from her predecessors. Where has it come from?
The answer is The Daily Mail. On Sunday in her first speech to her party as its leader, she set out her view of Brexit and announced that she intends to trigger Article 50 to start the UK’s withdrawal from the EU before March. This was a moment of upmost gravity, to recognise and measure the immense divisions that have been opened up within the country, and consider the implications for the entire continent that Britain once helped liberate from fascism. Instead, her tone, brevity and apparent practicality were drawn as if directly from a Daily Mail editorial.
Intelligent comments section, too.

I honestly thought I remembered you once wrote on a thread you were a Labour activist. Am I way off the mark?
More likely that it's Merkel telling a fib......it doesn't sound good for Germany not to want to guarantee our people working there and their own over here. They could have agreed to it as May was ready too, ahead of triggering article 50, and not treat people as bargaining chips....but they would not agree!

What 'fall out' after Theresa May's speech at Davos are you thinking of?
I was wondering that myself POGS
I've been waiting since 17.36 for the rest of the news outlets to have caught up with whitewave's source of information...

Pleased to hear that May recognised the fear of globalisation by so many. However she also went on to back globalisation.
But I thought you were a big fan of globalisation WW? Open borders, the 'global village', the great big melting pot?

The prime minister of India has made two things clear - Britain will be a far less attractive trading partner outside of the EU, and - any future trade agreement will depend on UK offering far more access to immigrants from India.
I do not neccesarly object to welcoming more Indian immigrants, but then I voted Remain. I suspect that the Leave voters may not be so welcoming.
Isn't the point that her speech was contradictory? As was her speech on Tuesday, if you analyse it.
PS. Globalisation is a fact of life. The UK made its money from globalisation and was better at it than other countries. Leaving the EU will inevitably mean that the UK has to be more global in its outlook. My biggest fear is that taking back control will mean handing it to the US (which is what Liam Fox wants) or the UK becomes the daddy of tax havens (which Douglas Carswell wrote a book about). Either of those outcomes will end up in tears for the people who voted Leave.
I hope there's a poll in three years with one question 'How has being in control affected you?'
Exactly, varian. I don't understand how Leave voters think that immigration will decrease. I think some are a tad confused.
Globalisation has always been with us no matter how narrow the then perceived borders. You only have to study economic history to know that world wide trade went on, albeit at a more sedate pace than today. Spices from India, amber from Russia, tin from Cornwall even before we sailed out in our galleons to conquer the world. I listened to the rhetoric from various politicians yesterday and came away feeling they were still fighting (in the UK) WW2. Sad.
This is what George Soros had to say about May's speech in Davos (not claiming he's right
), but you wanted to know about reaction to the speech, Ana.
^In my opinion is is unlikely that prime minister May is actually going to remain in power. Already she has a very divided cabinet, a very small majority in parliament. And I think she will not last.
At the moment the people in the UK are in denial. The current economic situation is not as bad as was predicted, and they live in hope. But as the currency depreciates, and inflation will be the driving force, this will lead to declining living standards.
This is going to take some time, but when it does happen they’ll realise that they are earning less than before because wages won’t rise as fast as the cost of living.
The divorce is going to take a very long time. Its much harder to divorce than to get married, so I think the desire for rapprochement will develop, and in theory or maybe even in practice you could have a situation in 2019 or 2020 when Britain will leave the EU because it does have to take place, but they could leave on a Friday but join over the weekend and have the new arrangement in place in Monday morning.^
I expect we'll have to wait until tomorrow's newspapers to see what spin is put on it. I shall compare different papers from different papers. I'm sure it's going to be interesting.

There are not so many Germans here, but the Poles, the Romanians, the Lithuanians and Latvians will be exceedingly unhappy if the future of millions of their citizens in Britain is uneasy. If Merkel gets away with this it shows who is wearing the jackboots
in the EU.
Negativity from the unelected billionaire globalist power broker Soros was as predictable as night following day DD.
These are the very people who the electorate are rebelling against
The electorate rebelling against them doesn't actually invalidate what they are saying.

Apparently half of UK citizens have some German blood.
No, it doesn't invalidate what he says. Soros was instrumental in keeping the UK out of the ERM by 'breaking the Bank of England'. I would have thought Brexiters would be grateful for that.
Good luck with rebelling against people like Soros! Ha ha ha!
If the electorate wants to rebel properly, they should become Trotskyists. If anything, leaving the EU will hand even more power to people as wealthy as Soros.
The electorate rebelling against them doesn't actually invalidate what they are saying.
But the electorate rebelling against them is a recognition of their having acted against the interests of the electorate and continuing to do so, in Britain, the US and across Europe.

That's the theory, but it hasn't worked out so well where its been followed.
Did you watch 'Who do you think you are?' when Julian Clary's mother said she didn't mind what he uncovered, just so long as he didn't uncover any Germans. It turned out Clary's gt grandfather was German.
I would imagine most 'indigenous' English have some Germanic blood. In fact, I'd be amazed if they didn't. Much English culture can be traced back directly to the Anglo-Saxons - even 'England' is derived from 'Englaland' which means land of the Angles, a Germanic tribe.
The Normans had Viking blood, so even people whose ancestors immigrated after the 1066 conquest are likely to have Germanic blood.
Daphne, I realise that you are not one of those with German blood!
Straw man argument!
No, it hasn't worked out and I'm not advocating it, but rebelling against people like Soros has about as much chance of success.
Well....maybe!
I can only go back to the mid sixteenth century. I probably have Viking blood. Actually I know I have on my paternal grandmother's side and probably on my paternal grandfather's side. My mother's ancestors could very well have been Anglo-Saxons. The point is that the English came from Germanic tribes.
The point is that the English came from Germanic tribes
Going back over a millenium, almost everyone was living in tribes. What point are you making?
